Aykroyd Blasts “Ghostbusters” Reboot Director

Last year’s “Ghostbusters” reboot did $229 million worldwide, a decent number on its own but for a film boasting a way too large $144 million budget – that makes it a flop with the chances of a sequel at next to nothing.

Now, original “Ghostbusters” star and co-writer Dan Aykroyd has said some choice words about that in a recent interview with Britain’s Channel 4 (via THR). Aykroyd, who is credited as an executive producer on the remake, says:

“The director, he spent too much on it and he didn’t shoot scenes we suggested to him. Several scenes that were going to be needed, he said, ‘No, we don’t need them.’ And then we tested the movie and they needed them, and he had to go back – about $30 to $40 million in reshoots… he will not be back on the Sony lot anytime soon.

I was really happy with the movie. [But] it cost too much, and Sony does not like to lose money. It made a lot of money around the world, but it just cost too much, making it economically not feasible to do another one.”

A source for the production has stood up for reboot director Paul Feig saying Aykroyd’s claims are exaggerated. They tell the trade: “the studio had an incredible relationship with the director, who was first-rate” and add that the reshoots cost one-tenth of what Aykroyd claims.

Reitman Has An Idea For Future “Ghostbusters”

Following in the wake of Dan Aykroyd’s comments about the disappointment of last year’s “Ghostbusters,” franchise co-founder Ivan Reitman has now weighed in.

Instead of laying into the Paul Feig-directed 2016 feature though, Reitman is instead looking to the future and in an interview with Super News Live has shared an ambitious vision he has for the franchise:

“What we’ve been doing a lot of is thinking about the franchise rights for ‘Ghostbusters.’ Because ‘Ghostbusters,’ that idea doesn’t have to just take place in New York, it can happen over the world.

I think it would be really cool to see Korean ghosts or Chinese ghosts. All those great traditions in the world have all these tales and things those people are afraid of. To have a sort of local group of Ghostbusters that tie with the head office in New York would be fun.”

Reitman says the franchise is still very much alive, despite reports suggesting otherwise. He says:

“We’re doing a lot of work about where do we go next with ‘Ghostbusters.’ I think one thing that fans have clearly wanted, and so did I, that somehow we tie the worlds together. I think it was a little awkward that it wasn’t connected, and we certainly heard a lot from everybody out there. So I would definitely want to connect to all of that.”

Whether Sony Pictures will be willing to spend the money on pursuing such ideas – we’ll wait and see.

Ghostbusters was a one movie concept. It worked because it had the right cast with the right script at the right time. Lightning in a bottle. The sequel proved that the magic of the original was a one-off. The reboot just proved that even further.

:emoji_hushed:~ I remember at first that I knocked down this movie when I first heard from someone else that they remade Ghostbusters. I was like no way, you can't remake a cult classic. Usually I not to big for remakes and I decided not to see at the theaters. So I ended up seeing watching it on Stars channel. There was literally nothing good to watch & I decided to give it a try. Saw the whole movie and it was very witty and entertaining but not as great as the original. The girls had worked well and I loved seeing the original Ghostbusters making a cameo.

Yeah, I had my doubts, but I wound up being more impressed by it than I thought I would be. @The Seeker is right, too much CGI, but I still thought it was entertaining. It was played as a straight comedy, though, and I hoped there would be more of those dark moments like in the original to balance it all out. Still, I didn't hate it, and laughed a quite a few moments.

Feig Would Love To Make “Ghostbusters 2”

ghostbusters-sequel-will-happen-says-sony-696x464.jpg

Appearing at CinemaCon this past week, “Ghostbusters” reboot director Paul Feig says he’s keen to return for a sequel to the 2016 comedy if the studio were interested.

The reboot of the classic Ivan Reitman 1984 comedy pulled in just over $229 million worldwide from a $144 million production budget. Ultimately the film was a $70+ million loss for the studio. Speaking with Yahoo, Feig says:

“We would love [to make another movie], it’s really up to the studio. We had so much fun making that movie. The movie’s just really built an audience in the two years since it’s been out. I get contacted every day by people who are such fans of it, and so many women who are inspired by seeing women in science. I will go to my grave so proud of that movie, and so proud of what that cast did in that film.”

Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon starred in the film which was the subject of so much off-screen criticism before its release which crippled it. He told Vulture last year: “I think it kind of hampered us a little bit because the movie became so much of a cause. I think for some of our audience, they were like, ‘What the f–k? We don’t wanna go to a cause. We just wanna watch a f–kin’ movie.'”

Feig returns to screens this Fall with the mystery-thriller “A Simple Favor” opening September 14th.

If women are being inspired by seeing the science that the women in this movie did, then I fear for the future of science.

I suspect the fact that it was a pretty bad movie didn't help it either.

Feig On His Scrapped “Ghostbusters 2” Plans

ghostbusters-70m-loss-nixes-sequel-chanes-696x464.jpg

However you feel about director Paul Feig’s “Ghostbusters” reboot, there’s no question the 2016 film was a dud. Costing $144 million and taking in a box-office haul of $229 million, the film lost any chance of a sequel and while critical reviews were fine, they weren’t stellar.

Feig’s back in cinemas this week with the much tighter budgeted “A Simple Favour,” dubbed a ‘post-modern film noir’ thriller which stars Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick. Out doing promo rounds for it, he spoke with Happy Sad Confused podcast where he looked back at “Ghostbusters” and revealed his initial inspiration for the now abandoned sequel was while he was doing press for the first film:

“I definitely wanted us to go to another country. Because when we were doing the press tour, the international press tour, every country the reporters would come with these drawings or artist renderings of that country’s ghosts. And every country has these really wild ghost stories and ghost characters that they scare kids with or keep people in line with. I really loved the idea of the Ghostbusters going to like Asia. Yeah, so there’s a lot of fun stuff what we could have done.”

Things are looking happier for Feig’s “a Simple Favour” which is drawing rave reviews and is expected to have a $12-15 million opening weekend.
