Coleman Returns For Capaldi’s “Who” Finale?

coleman-returns-for-capaldis-who-finale-696x464.jpg

Actress Jenna Coleman is reportedly in talks to return as former companion Clara Oswald for a cameo in the upcoming “Doctor Who” Christmas special.

The Mirror reports that the return will play out similarly to the Karen Gillan and Billie Piper cameos in the final moments before The Doctor regenerates into his new form.

The special itself sees the Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi) trying to stave off his oncoming regeneration while encountering the First Doctor (David Bradley). Ultimately of course he will change with the new actor’s identity still under wraps for now.

The special will mark the final outing not just for Capaldi but for executive producer Steven Moffat who is handing over showrunner duties to Chris Chibnall (“Broadchurch”) who will start afresh with a ‘soft reboot’ – new Doctor, new companion, new tone and more.

Doctor Who Christmas special: First look at Peter Capaldi's final outing

The release of the trailer coincided with the cast appearing at Comic-Con in San Diego on Sunday, where they talked about the upcoming episode, the last series and looked back at Capaldi's time on the sci-fi drama.

Gatiss described the Christmas special as being "a Christmas episode without being overtly Christmassy - it's very happy-sad".

He added: "[It's] a fantastic episode and we had a great time doing it. It was a lovely way out."

It will be the third time the Sherlock actor and writer has appeared on Doctor Who, after previously starring in episodes in series three and six.

Mackie also confirmed the festive episode will be her last appearance on the show.

Analysis - Lizo Mzimba, Entertainment correspondent

Twice Upon a Time is the final episode for Peter Capaldi's Twelfth Doctor and for outgoing showrunner Steven Moffat. Both have been huge Doctor Who fans for most of their lives, and their final story is clearly a love letter to a show that means a huge amount to both.

This first trailer begins with original footage of the First Doctor, William Hartnell, from 1966's The Tenth Planet (episode two if you're interested), which then mixes through to David Bradley who plays him in this story.

But it also shows a glimpse of a scene with the First Doctor and his assistant Polly from episode four - Hartnell's final episode before Patrick Troughton took over. Sadly that episode is one of the dozens that are still missing from the BBC archives.

The minute-long teaser also makes clear that this Christmas story won't just be accessible to long term fans. Bill will be back, after she was last seen heading off to travel the universe with student-turned-space and time traveller Heather.

The trailer also shows actor and writer Mark Gatiss making another Doctor Who appearance. In 2007 he played Professor Lazarus, and he also briefly popped up playing a different character in 2011.

Comic-Con fans were shown a three-minute goodbye video for Capaldi, thanking him for his time on the show, which led to a standing ovation.

The actor praised writer and executive producer Steven Moffat, saying: "Every shot you saw there came through his gentleman's mind. The message of the show comes from his heart."

Moffat revealed: "It's the 12th Doctor saying to Number One, 'Listen, you have to [change] or all of this stuff won't happen!' and the 1st Doctor saying, 'Well, what about you?' – they go off on a crazy adventure with Mark Gatiss and Bill Potts and decide whether or not they're going to carry on... which of course, they are!"

I don't know about that Alan, but there are some who might argue that she had something to do with there being something wrong with the show. :emoji_innocent:

David Bradley: there’s “a lot of conflict” between the two Doctors over “casual chauvinism” in the Doctor Who Christmas special

The First Doctor thinks his female companions should be spring cleaning the Tardis...

The First and Twelfth Doctors may have to work together in the Doctor Who Christmas special but they're also going to find themselves clashing – over the original Time Lord's outdated views about women.

"What we did emphasise [about the First Doctor] was the old fashioned nature and how he is from the 60s," revealed David Bradley, who plays the part opposite Peter Capaldi's more enlightened incarnation.

"He goes into the Twelfth Doctor’s Tardis and says ‘it’s a bit dusty around here, it’s in an awful state isn’t it? Where’s Polly? Shouldn’t she give it a spring clean?' And then Peter’s saying ‘you can’t say that’.

"[The First Doctor] brings all his 60s sensibilities, what’s lovingly called casual chauvinism," said Bradley, speaking at the London Film and Comic Con. "He’s just talking [as if] the [companions] are there just to help out, and do the dusting and do all the domestic chores – his attitudes to a lot of things come right from the 60s, so there’s a lot of conflict between Hartnell’s Doctor and Peter’s Doctor about how things have changed in the last 50 years... we had quite a bit of fun with that."

We can only hope that the First Doctor is around long enough to see who the Twelfth regenerates into...

An unexpected event in the Doctor Who Christmas special left David Bradley and Peter Capaldi “almost blubbing”

"We weren’t prepared for all the things that were going to be going on around us," says the First Doctor

What could David Bradley be talking about? In a session at the London Film and Comic Con, the actor who plays the First Doctor in this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special talked about a scene from the episode that he says left both himself and departing Twelfth Doctor Peter Capaldi close to tears – and that somehow came as a surprise to them.

It apparently involves some unexpected events that took place around them as they were filming, which seems pretty unprecedented in the world of scripted TV, and makes it sound as if they deliberately had a surprise sprung on them.

What it might be who can say, but the fact that the special is likely to end with Capaldi’s farewell and regeneration and perhaps Bradley’s as well means something emotional isn’t too much of a surprise – but the fact that they didn’t know it was coming certainly is.

What can it all mean? Here’s what happened in David Bradley’s own words, so you can judge for yourselves…

“There’s an event towards the end of [the Christmas special] that happens and when it happened, well, we just did a take and neither Peter nor I expected it.

“There was no CGI involved, it was all happening and we were both almost blubbing by the time that the take ended. I can’t say, I’m not going to say, what it was but it was quite an event and we weren’t prepared for all the things that were going to be going on around us as we were doing our dialogue.

“And as I say to you, we got quite lumpy. They’ve kept that out of the trailer but it takes it all to another dimension…”

A multi-Doctor episode, a regeneration, the introduction of the first female Doctor, a farewell to Peter Capaldi – and now this. It’s pretty clear this is going to be a very special episode of Doctor Who – and it’s going to get emotional…

Doctor Who’s Christmas special almost didn’t happen this year

Steven Moffat has revealed how the upcoming Doctor Who Christmas special almost didn’t happen, due to the changing hands between writers.

The upcoming special titled Twice Upon A Time is set to be Peter Capaldi’s last outing as the Doctor, with writer Steven Moffat also bowing out from the show and being replaced by Broadchurch’s Chris Chibnall.

Speaking to Digital Spy however, Moffat revealed how this year’s festive episode almost didn’t materialise because Chibnall wanted to start series 11 in January rather than take the reins at Christmas.

‘There was one big glitch, which was Christmas,’ Moffat said. ‘I was going to leave at the end of series 10 – I had my finale planned and what I wanted to do with it. I had a good notion of that.

‘Then I learned at a drinks event that Chris didn’t want to start with a Christmas, so at that point they were going to skip Christmas. There’d be no Christmas special and we would’ve lost that slot.’

He was worried missing the festive special this year would result in Doctor Who losing the annual Christmas slot altogether, and revealed how it took Capaldi some convincing to remain on board for a few more months.

‘Doctor Who would’ve lost that slot if we hadn’t [done a special] because Christmas Day is so rammed,’ Moffat added.

‘So I said, probably four glasses of red wine in, “I’ll do Christmas!” and then had to persuade Peter [Capaldi] that’s how we were leaving.

Then I had to work out how you could get mortally injured in one episode and spend an hour regenerating on Christmas Day, which I hopefully have done!’

Capaldi has also recently teased how his regeneration will be ‘emotional’ when he appears alongside David Bradley’s First Doctor.

If you’re eagerly anticipating Jodie Whittaker’s turn as the Doctor, you may have a long wait, with Steven Moffat recently teasing a release date of autumn 2018.

No kidding! After the series of abuses and misuse of him as an actor and as the present Doctor, I'm gobsmacked they could get him to walk back onto the set at all. After everything they did, or didn't do or just overlooked, he still has the professionalism and consideration for both the character and the fans to walk back into a situation that had bordered, in my opinion, on abusive if not at least neglectful and disrespectful. It says quite a lot about PC that he'd even do this at all and makes me even more angry about the way he was treated, the crappy scripts he got and the spectacular disregard for what and "Who" he could have been as The Doctor.

The man is one hell of a lot more forgiving and considerate than I would have been and much more than the situation called for or even deserved....

Given everything that's happened over the last several months, I really may be done with The Doctor after all..... it's just all so bloody tragic.

My prediction...

He must face his past to decide his future.
The Capaldi Doctor will be so appalled by the blatant sexism of the First Doctor, that he will decide to regenerate into a woman in reaction to it, to make amends for his past attitudes. The above quote seems to be a fairly obvious hint.

So after watching the episode for free people will be able to pay to see it again? Where do I sign up for that?

The actor – who is a Whovian – took to Twitter to announce that the highly coveted prize, which appears to have been signed by both Capaldi and Moffat, will go to the highest bidder in his 2017 Hollywood Charity Horse Show silent auction, which commences online this Sunday.
