As I recall this was the offical 2nd pilot. Well on its way to being the Star Trek we know and love but still not quite there. No Dr McCoy yet and Spock in a command colour uniform rather than science. Overall though, it was quite a good episode exploring the corruption that results from absolute power.

I love the fan theory that speculated that the "God" creature in STAR TREK V: THE FINAL FRONTIER was actually Gary Mitchell, evolved to a point where he does not even recognise Kirk.

I swallow any hokum like that! :emoji_alien:

This second attempt at a pilot wasn't great either. The Mantrap is usually listed as the first episode with this as three or four. I've always been uneasy with Sci fi heroes or villains conjuring things out of thin air as Mitchell does at the end. The beginnings of the series we love is here, but not a great start for the series.

Looks very good! Why can't these numbskulls at CBS do better? They have the money and resources but fail every time!

I think it's because the fan-films are made with genuine fan-love and the DISCOVERY garbage is made by clueless, cynical arrogant upstarts.

HaHaHaHa Never has a truer word been said! I thought that ENT was up it's own end as well but even that is better than Discovery!
Some weird guy I know said he thinks the reason that Discovery is so advanced compared to TOS era starships is that it's a vessel commanded by Section 31 staff! Now maybe he has a point but it still stinks and he hasn't given me an explanation for the conker headed Klingons either that and the fact they don't look like TOS versions!

Your thoughts on this episode.....

The flight recorder of the 200-year-old U.S.S. Valiant relays a tale of terror--a magnetic storm at the edge of the galaxy!

On to the next episode....

THE CORBOMITE MANEUVER

I loved WNMHGB and still do! It connects with the Menagerie footage due to the costumes and Spock's much harsher appearance! I'd say that this episode would definitely be set during the first few weeks of the epic five year voyage! Sorry James Blish! This was made back in the days when actors were capable of making you think that they really were long time friends with the guy hired just for the one show!

Yes, it has become clear that they actually don't give a damn for any of the continuity at all, caring only to keep the audience watching, at all costs, with flashy visuals and lots of whizzes and bangs. Explosions, violence and arguing. Oh, and misplaced f-bombs now too. Coz people will hear about the swearing and might tune in, coz no publicity is bad publicity to their mind.

A good example of the mentality behind this garbage is that there was one scene where Michael was talking quietly - in a friendly way - with another character. It was even shaping up to be two people being pleasant to each other.

So what happened? Clearly the programme makers got worried that the audience might be getting bored of two characters getting on and having a testosterone free conversation of any length. So they had the entire outer hull of the room rip away and the guy she was talking to died a horrible death, flip-flopping into the vacuum of space, while she was protected inside the brig.

The only DISCOVERY has been the depths of fear that the programme makers have about losing the attention of their audience. :emoji_alien:

That is perhaps one of the most insulting aspects of this "enterprise". It gives the impression that a (non-Trek-fan) writer has flipped through a couple of reference books and randomly picked a few familiar motifs out, and then shoehorned them in to the scripts and stories to give it a dubious air of authenticity.

THE WRITER'S ROOM:

HEAD WRITER: (As he flips through THE IDIOT'S GUIDE TO TREK) " Okay guys! Let's make her Spock's adopted sister, but never show Spock! So we can use Sarek now. Sling Harry Mudd in there. And I want a sexy Amada! And one Tribble. F*** it! That'll do. That should shut the Goddamn fans up!"

GOOD WRITER: "What about the continuity? I mean, what about Sybok for a start? Shouldn't we be....?"

HEAD WRITER: "You are no longer work in this building. buddy! Call security! Who the f*** let a fan in here?!?"

That sounds about right, Doctor! Tribbles were unknown to the crew of The Enterprise until the second season! The Gorn were unknown to Kirk and team until Arena but Gabe has a skeleton of one in his ready room! Why? Sarek as played by James Frain looks nothing like Mark Lenard yet in Animated Trek's Yesteryear he did!!! Also where was Michael whatever her name is in Yesteryear? This is a bad series and group of writers!
