While William Shatner and Nimoy went on to branch out successfully into other areas, (such as Shatner sticking his name on other people's novels and becoming a best-selling author) the supporting cast often limped behind, perhaps feeding their resentment.....

One, I think, fairly sad example is the "Engineer" trilogy by James Doohan, written "with" S.M. Sterling....

Unlike TEKWAR, this one didn't get a tv series or comic book and is, I think, clearly dancing around getting sued by Paramount as "THE THINLY DISGUISED SCOTTY NOVELS".

Introducing
Flight Engineer Peter Raeder.
The man who is ''Scotty'' now creates
a blockbuster science fiction
adventure series!

Peter Raeder became the Commonwealth's first ace pilot in the war against the secessionist Mollies. That battle cost him his hand-and his right to fly the nimble Speeds that had been his first love. Now he's Flight Engineer on the fast carrier Invincible, a crack new ship with a picked crew, ready to fight the Mollies who control the universe's richest anti-hydrogen mines, and the loathsome spider-like alien Fibians who have come to their aid.

There are only a few problems. The pirate raiders who attack the convoy taking him to his new posting, for one. And closer to home, the traitor onboard the Invincible who engineered the grisly death of Peter's predecessor, and who'll kill the entire crew unless Peter can stop him....

What's the betting that S.M. Stirling approached James Doohan at a convention and made the business proposition: "Hey! I write the books, you stick your names on them and we both make a buck?"

Walter Koenig, at least, wrote his own material with BUCK ALICE AND THE ACTOR ROBOT....

Also, just found this.......

'Star Trek': Walter Koenig on Lean Years After Cancellation and How Writing Ultimately Saved Him

From the mind of Walter Koenig (Star Trek: The Original Series, Babylon 5) comes Buck Alice and the Actor-Robot - a science-fiction comedy unlike anything you've ever heard before! When an alien invasion annihilates most of humanity, it's up to a small pocket of survivors to restart civilization. There's just one problem: they're all losers.

From an Irish pub to the Florida Everglades, from the outermost reaches of space to the innermost regions of the mind, join a rag-tag group of humans and aliens as they face the end of one way of life and the beginning of another.
Packed with absurdity, pathos, wry observations about human nature, and a story that will keep you on your toes until the final word, Buck Alice is an emotional journey you'll want to take again and again.

With a full-cast, a sweeping original music score, and thousands of sound effects, the award winning Colonial Radio Theatre On The Air proudly presents a black comedy with a heart that pumps slightly acidic blood. Grab a manhole cover and prepare yourself for a story that begins when all others end - Buck Alice and the Actor-Robot!

Yes, a definite pattern emerging.....

From Nichelle Nichols and acclaimed Star Trek author Margaret Wander Bonanno come an extraordinary debut novel. This is the story of Saturna, born in the late 21st century with unearthly beauty and stunning powers. Half-human, hald-Fazisian, her very existence violates both Earth and Fazis laws--and could initiate all-out interplanetary war.

Aliens Reclaim the Earth!

Long before man dominated the planet, Earth was visited by a scientifically advanced species. Armed with the knowledge that an impending ecological cataclysm would destroy all indigenous life, these "visitors" removed the most promising specimens to save them from destruction. On new worlds, they evolved into the most advanced and deadly beings in the universe. Now, many millennia later, these creatures are coming home for an "alien" reunion, and to reclaim what was rightfully theirs -- planet Earth.

"A cosmic SF concept". -- Science Fiction Age

"Exciting... recommended". -- Library Journal

"Perry draws main characters who are well-developed. He throws a liberal amount of romance into the plot, altogether forming a solid base for possible future novels. Interesting, enjoyable, and recommended for most collections". -- John O. Christensen, VOYA

There was a PRIMORTALS comic too.....

In fact, I just realised, the comic came first.....

Primortals (or typecased PriMortals) was a comic book series published by Tekno-Comix (later Big Entertainment) from 1995 to 1997. The characters and concept were created by actor Leonard Nimoy, who developed the idea for the series after visiting the SETI project. Science fiction writer Isaac Asimov was credited with providing additional concepts. The script of the debut issue of Primortals was credited to Kate Worley and Lawrence Watt-Evans with art by Scot Eaton and Mike Barreiro. Eaton and Barreiro illustrated the comic for most of its run, while the book was most often scripted by Christopher Mills and later James Chambers.

Premise

The comic's plot revolved around humanity's first contact with an alien intelligence called the Primortals. The series showed how, in ancient times, aliens called the Majae removed various species from Earth and raised them to sentience. Avitaur Zeerus, rebellious alien governor of Achernar Three, flees to Earth after being defeated by hostile alien forces. Public reaction to his arrival, and the warnings of alien invasion he gives, are depicted in the comic as ranging from ecstasy to paranoia.

Publications

Twenty-four regular issues of the comic were published (though numbering of the comic was restarted following issue number 15), as well as a two issue Origins miniseries and a standalone crossover, Teknophage vs. Zeerus. The final issue of the comic bore a cover date of February, 1997. A novelization written by Steve Perry was published in 1997. An interactive CD-ROM was released by Big Entertainment in 1996, allowing the reader to see the beginning of the story from 4 different points of view.

So this explains Kirk's battle with his weight over the years.

Presumably, Scotty, beaming it up, got to it first every time, which explains a lot. :emoji_confused:

The Vic Mignona shows were a great tribute to TOS and the path that CBS and Paramount should have taken with any future Trek television series! But sadly they think they know better!

Yes, I totally agree. CONTINUES was clearly made with genuine love and enthusiasm.

DISCOVERY and the ABRAMS movies have totally lost the way in my opinion.

Even Rick Berman - though he sometimes faltered or pulled it in the wrong, slightly too dark direction, - overall "got" the essence of Star Trek more than these fools.

How can Discovery go into the Mirror universe a decade before Kirk? That spoils the continuity of the parallel reality in the series surely? Why oh why must fools interfere with the work of the gods?

I have given up on waiting for them to cancel this rubbish. Doubtless it will go on to yield more episodes than TOS and TNG put together! Meanwhile I shall stick with THE ORVILLE. Seth McFarlane "gets" Trek and cares more than these idiots ever will, even if he cannot make it an official continuation of the franchise, although I do wonder if Paramount will have the audacity to try and sue THE ORVILLE if it's steadily growing success starts to yield merchandise profits etc.

Speaking of an official continuation, I would also like them to do CONTINUES on an official basis. but can't see that happening now.

When it comes to STC, I'd like to see the cast and crew commissioned by Paramount - or whomever currently owns the rights to ST - to make a proper TV series set 10 years before the original, with fresh characters. Because we all know they'd be able to do a better job than all of the "professionals" put together.

Mind you, I would allow a couple of links to the original...

I'd get Chris Doohan to play a relation of Montgomery Scott. And if Todd Haberkorn still wanted to play a Vulcan, he could play the second one to successfully complete Starfleet training, behind Spock. I also like the idea of them having one of the first ship's councillors in Starfleet history. An early experiment in the idea.

The executive producer has given himself the title role of Captain Pike.

I wish they wouldn't do that kind of thing if they don't have the acting chops.

I see Walter Koenig got roped in somehow too.

Hmmmmmm! I've never been keen on these fan films but Vic Mignona and his team made me a believer! Not sure if I'd take the rest of the bunch with a pinch of salt though!
