Stallone Confirms Drago In “Creed II” Script

stallone-confirms-drago-in-creed-ii-script-696x464.jpg

Sylvester Stallone has taken to Instagram to confirm several rumors swirling in recent weeks about the currently in-development sequel to “Creed” at MGM.

First off, he has now completed the script for the acclaimed “Rocky” spin-off’s follow-up and confirmed that both Dolph Lundgren’s Ivan Drago, and possibly his offspring, will be involved in a big bloody battle with Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan) in the ring. Stallone wrote:

“JUST DONE …. if you are curious , around 439 handwritten pages translates into about a 120 page typed screenplay …#writers cramp #rockybalboa #drago #adoniscreed #MGM”

“Creed” pulled in over $173 million at the worldwide box office and scored Stallone both a best-supporting actor Golden Globe win and Oscar nomination.

The first film’s director Ryan Coogler is busy with “Black Panther” until February and is in high demand so it’s uncertain if he’ll return.

“Creed 2” To Have Rocky Punching Drago

creed-2-to-have-rocky-punching-drago.jpg

Ryan Coogler’s “Creed” in 2015 showed how to do both a spin-off and a reboot right. The continuation of the “Rocky” franchise boasted energy, freshness and a compelling new story whilst still nodding its cap toward the legacy of the earlier films.

With the inevitable sequel on the way, Sylvester Stallone has been at work on the screenplay and has been hinting of a tie-in to the events of “Rocky IV” – the film in which Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) killed Apollo Creed.

Now, Stallone has made the connection explicit, telling TMZ this week that the film: “wouldn’t be a party without Drago would it? I’m gonna punch him. You know I gotta hit Drago once.”

Stallone has previously stated that the current draft in his scrapbook comes in at 439 pages which will translate to “a 120 page typed screenplay.” Lundgren’s Drago famously only had four lines of dialogue in the original, if the actor does return we can probably expect more than that this time out.

“Creed 2” doesn’t have a start date yet, mostly due to the delay in regards to Ryan Coogler’s “Black Panther” commitments.

Lundgren Begins “Creed” Sequel Training

Currently in the midst of production on James Wan’s “Aquaman,” actor Dolph Lundgren has teased via video on Instagram that he’s getting ready for his return to the “Rocky” franchise with the upcoming “Creed” sequel.

Sylvester Stallone has been teasing the return of Lundgren’s Ivan Drago character from the fourth film, but Lundgren hasn’t spoken about it. Today’s vid, with the caption “Getting ready for something big! @officialslystallone #Creed2 #IvanDrago” is the first real confirmation of his involvement by the man himself.

How Ivan Drago is going to factor into the film is unclear beyond the obvious storyline element – Drago killed Apollo Creed in the ring years ago, so Michael B. Jordan’s Adonis Creed (Apollo’s son) will understandably be upset when he finally meets the man.

Stallone himself recently said that he is going to throw at least one punch in Drago’s direction. Specifics of when production will begin are unclear.

Sylvester Stallone has indicated that the upcoming “Creed” sequel will be shooting next year.

The actor posted on Instagram on Friday a shot from the first film with the caption: “Getting stronger!!! 2018 #Creed 2 #mgm #fitness #Rocky”

MGM says in a statement to Variety that the project remains only in development: “We are continuing to work on developing the sequel to ‘Creed'”.

Sylvester Stallone To Direct “Creed 2”

sylvester-stallone-to-direct-creed-2-696x464.jpg

Sylvester Stallone has made it official, he’s set to take the helm of the “Creed” sequel. Stallone took to Instagram to announce that he’ll be both directing and produce the follow-up, which he also wrote.

Stallone takes over from “Fruitvale Station” and “Black Panther” director Ryan Coogler who helmed the first “Creed”. On the flipside Stallone has directed four of the previous “Rocky” films including the second, third, fourth and sixth ones along with starring in them.

Stallone has spent the past few months teasing the return of Dolph Lundgren’s Ivan Drago, the Russian boxer who killed Apollo Creed in the ring in “Rocky IV”. Michael B. Jordan is slated to return in the new film as Adonis Creed.

Drago’s Son Cast In The “Creed” Sequel

dragos-son-cast-in-the-creed-sequel.jpg

Standing at 6’4″ and weighing 245 pounds, 27-year-old Romanian boxer Florian ‘Big Nasty’ Munteanu has been cast in the role of the son of Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) in the upcoming sequel to the “Rocky” spin-off film “Creed” according to The Tracking Board.

Munteanu’s character will fight Michael B. Jordan’s Adonis Creed in the ring, a next generational rematch following the fight between their fathers that kicked off “Rocky IV” and resulted in Apollo Creed’s death.

Steven Caple Jr. (“The Land”) helms the new film which Stallone co-wrote with “Luke Cage” showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker. Filming begins in Philadelphia in March ahead of a November 21st release.

The first “Creed” earned over $173 million at the worldwide box office and scored Stallone a Best Supporting actor Golden Globe win and an Oscar nomination. Scheduling has prevented director Ryan Coogler from returning to helm.

Creed 2
Director: Steven Caple Jr. (“The Land,” “A Different Tree”)
Cast: Sylvester Stallone, Michael B. Jordan, Tessa Thompson, Dolph Lundgren
Details: The “Rocky” spin-off “Creed” opened November 2015 and rode a wave of critical love and box-office success, ranking high on many best of year lists. Within two months MGM confirmed a sequel was in development with plans for a release November 2017, but with that announcement came the news that Ryan Coogler wouldn’t return as writer/director which still has many sceptical about this follow-up.

Instead relative newcomer Steven Caple Jr. is taking the helm of the film which Stallone wrote (and originally wanted to direct) and, after delays effectively pushed back the film by year. Perhaps the most interesting angle here is the return of “Rocky IV” villain Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) who killed Adonis Creed’s father Apollo in the ring in that film. This is expected to pick up that story thread and will go into production this coming Spring.

Creed 2
Filming appears to now be underway on the “Creed” sequel with actors Dolph Lundgren and Florian Munteanu having recently been spotted on the famed ‘Rocky Steps’ of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Lundgren reprises his role of Ivan Drago with Munteanu playing his on screen son, while both Sylvester Stallone and Michael B. Jordan co-star in the film which opens in November.

New Details On The “Creed II” Story

quick-news-creed-2-marvel-knightley-silver-696x464.jpg

We know its coming and we know some of the cast, but specifics about the story for the upcoming “Creed” sequel have been under wraps beyond it involving the return of Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) from “Rocky IV” who has his own son who is also a fighter.

In the “Rocky” franchise, Drago killed Apollo Creed in the boxing ring, leading to Stallone’s Ricky Balboa taking him on in that fourth film. “Creed” centered around Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan) who has been living with the legacy of his late father and being trained by Rocky.

“Luke Cage” showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker wrote the “Creed” sequel and in a new interview with Slashfilm, he discussed his aim with the new film:

“It’s about the legacies of sons haunted by their fathers. Even though Drago is alive, his son is haunted by him because Drago is a broken man who is trying to rebuild himself through the son. Apollo Creed isn’t broken but because Apollo died, Adonis Creed is still haunted by his father’s death and how it defined him, what it is it means now to be a champion. He’s aspiring to be a champion but also at the same time trying to figure out who it is he is. Particularly with Bianca, particularly also because he’s got Rocky who at this point becomes the new Mickey.”

Stallone worked with Coker on later drafts, but Coker says his love of the first “Creed” made sure the film served as a proper sequel to that as opposed to another Rocky film:.

“The first Creed is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. I cried like a baby when they got to that scene when he’s like, ‘Why are you doing this, kid?’ and he’s like, ‘I just want to prove that I wasn’t a mistake.’ I’m sitting there, oh my God, I was verklempt, man. A lot of black men that have issues with their fathers, when they saw that scene, it became our Brian’s Song. It became our Remember the Titans. It became one of those movies that it is acceptable for ‘macho’ men to cry during. So the opportunity to work on Creed II was definitely something that I fought for, something that I couldn’t pass up. Later on, when I got to work with Stallone on the draft, that was a dream come true.”

Steven Caple, Jr. directs “Creed II” which sees Jordan, Stallone and Tessa Thompson reprising their roles. “Creed II” is in cinemas on November 21st.

Lundgren Talks Drago’s Change In “Creed 2”

lundgren-talks-dragos-change-in-creed-2-696x464.jpg

A month out from release and “Creed II” is being sold on the fact that it serves not only as a sequel to 2015’s acclaimed “Rocky” spin-off “Creed,” but also something of a sequel to “Rocky IV”.

That 1985 film began with the death of Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) in the ring at the hands of Soviet boxing champ Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren), leading to Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) taking on Ivan in the ring. Now, three decades later, Apollo and Ivan’s sons Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan) and Viktor Drago (Florian Munteanu) take to the ring in a film that deals with themes of maturity, legacy and family.

For the first time since “Rocky IV,” Dolph Lundgren reprises the role of a now older Ivan Drago and, speaking with Empire, Lundgren reveals that time has not been kind to the former boxer:

“Basically, my character has been in a living hell since 1985 and lost everything. The script re-introduces him as a pretty damaged character, emotionally, and somebody who’s suffered a lot physically from a hard life. I can identify with that quite easily. The physical part [and] the emotional part.”

Lundgren also reveals he’s somewhat protective of the character and didn’t see a point in reprising it until this film’s new approach, one he could identify with as daddy issues go hand in hand with competitiveness and physical contact sports:

“[He’s] become an iconic character. People quote him and have T-shirts. I didn’t want to mess with that image. I didn’t see a way, up until now, that it would work. But obviously now when I’m old enough, suddenly I work as a parent. The father-son concept was quite good because I had a violent relationship with my dad… many men do and end up in contact sports.”

“Creed 2” is currently slated to hit cinemas on November 21st.

The Michael B. Jordan-led “Creed II” scored another $16.8 million, a drop of 53%, and the film’s $81 million domestic total is still comfortably well ahead of the original “Creed’ and on track to become the biggest “Rocky” film to date.
