Misbehaviour Might End “Lethal Weapon” Series

misbehaviour-might-end-lethal-weapon-series-696x464.jpg

Though a renewal of FOX’s action series “Lethal Weapon” for a third season is considered a fait accompli thanks to strong ratings, behind-the-scenes issues are reportedly holding up the process – specifically bad behaviour of co-lead Clayne Crawford.

Deadline reports that Crawford has had a history of bad behavior on the show, and has been disciplined several times over complaints of emotional abuse and creating a hostile work environment. Things have reportedly escalated to a point where other actors and crew feel uncomfortable being on set with him.

It’s bad enough that the problem is threatening the future of the show, with the idea of recasting being explored – or even potentially cancellation. “Rectify” star Crawford was a late addition to the series, coming on to play Martin Riggs not long before production began as opposed to co-star Damon Wayans who was with the series from its inception.

The show’s most recent season averaged a 1.7 rating and 6.9 million total viewers and is Fox’s No. 2 returning drama behind “Empire”.

While looking around for a video interview clip of the actor I stumbled on the above anti-bullying video that was posted earlier this month.

I think I can guess what has happened.

I am betting that disgruntled cast and crew have been outraged at his hypocrisy in doing this campaign, while (seemingly) making their daily lives a misery and they have decided to call him out on it very publicly?

Otherwise it seems a bit of a coincidence! :emoji_alien:

“Lethal Weapon” To Recast Clayne Crawford

lethal-weapon-to-recast-clayne-crawford-696x464.jpg

Actor Clayne Crawford has been fired from FOX’s “Lethal Weapon” TV series with Warner Bros. Television scrambling to find an actor to replace him.

Crawford, who had the co-lead role of Martin Riggs, has come under fire for his bad behavior on the set. The actor recently apologized for two incidents for which he was reprimanded during the sophomore season, but it apparently wasn’t good enough and so he’s out.

Multiple actors have reportedly been offered the role for a potential third season and already passed on it. The decision will have to be made soon with FOX’s upfront presentation scheduled for Monday.

If they can’t recast by June 30th, when options on the cast expire, then the series will likely be cancelled. The show has been a solid hit for FOX since its 2016 debut.

Seann William Scott Joins “Lethal Weapon”

FOX’s action procedural series “Lethal Weapon” has been saved with “American Pie” star Seann William Scott set to star as the co-lead opposite Damon Wayans on the series.

Scott takes over for original co-lead Clayne Crawford whose option for next season will not be picked up by producer Warner Bros. TV after on-set behavior issues. With Scott’s casting, the series has been renewed just a day ahead of FOX’s upfront presentation.

Marking his first series regular role, Scott will play a new character who will be partnered with Wayans’ Murtaugh
. The recent second season finale saw Crawford’s Riggs, planning to move back to Texas, get shot in the chest.

The series was considered a slam dunk for a renewal, thanks to an average 8.7 million multi-platform audience, until the behind-the-scenes problems involving Crawford put it all in jeopardy. Scott emerged as a choice earlier this week and was sealed after he met with Wayans over the weekend.

A Closer Look At The “Lethal Weapon” Mess

a-closer-look-at-the-lethal-weapon-mess-696x464.jpg

The firing of Clayne Crawford and his replacement by Seann William Scott seemed to bring an end to the controversy surrounding FOX’s “Lethal Weapon” series. It was quite clear Crawford and co-star Damon Wayans weren’t friendly at all, and that much of the crew weren’t Crawford fans either, with knowledge of the conflict going public this year.

A new report in Variety goes extensively into the feud, including video recorded on the sly on the set of the series, and it paints a better picture of just how bad things got before action was taken. Speaking with nearly three dozen people who worked on the series and spoke anonymously with the trade, it was seemingly a set which had descended into chaos.

Crews were split in factions, production was halted many times, and the work environment grew so toxic that security guards were present on set at all times to ensure disagreements would not deteriorate into physical violence. With Crawford out, Warners is cleaning house and reportedly getting rid of over two dozen crew members loyal to him.

One incident involved Crawford, growing increasingly frustrated by a bad filming location by an apartment pool, allegedly repeatedly yelling to crew to “shut ’em the f–k up” regarding some 10-11 year old kids playing within earshot. That episode’s director Eric Laneuville reportedly butted heads with multiple actors and due to the escalating tension with Crawford, exited the episode with series editor Matt Barber finishing it uncredited.

Producer Frank Waldeck came onboard in October to help defuse tension on set, but five months later it went to hell when Crawford directed an episode and a special-effects explosion saw Wayans struck on the back of the head by a piece of shrapnel, suffering a laceration.

The following day, Wayans returned to the set and he and Crawford began to argue about the safety issue of the previous day and the responsibility for what happened. That led to Crawford goading Wayans, allegedly calling him a ‘pussy’ several times along with a crybaby and teasing him about his family.

Wayans refused to do the rest of the scene that day leading to a heated argument later which saw production shut down for the day. The episode was then rewritten so that Crawford and Wayans would not be in any scenes together for the remainder of shooting.

After the season wrapped and the replacement casting was announced, Wayans took to social media to slam Crawford with a few claims from posted flyers being up around the lot to actor Lance Henriksen being hit by Crawford in the mouth with a bottle – the trade says according to all their sources neither was true. Henriksen did get hit in the face by a bottle, but it was a minor accident as part of filming and wasn’t an issue.

Some sources say despite his media reputation, Crawford was warm, dedicated and passionate about his work – he just gets angry when frustrated, boiling the whole thing down to an issue of temperament. Others paint him as more combative, subjecting crew members to profanity-laced tirades. Wayans is painted as charming but also difficult to work with at points, one calling him passive-aggressive as opposed to Crawford’s aggressive-aggressive.

Filming on the show’s third season kicks off in July.

Clayne Crawford Speaks About “Lethal” Exit

clayne-crawford-speaks-about-lethal-exit-696x464.jpg

Following on from his exit from FOX’s “Lethal Weapon” series earlier this year, the show’s former co-star Clayne Crawford has spoken out about his firing from the series in an interview on the Drinkin’ Bros. podcast (via Deadline).

Crawford, who had the co-lead role of Martin Riggs, came under fire for his apparent bad behavior on the set. The actor apologized for two incidents for which he was reprimanded during the sophomore season, but it apparently wasn’t good enough and so he was out.

Speaking on the podcast, Crawford surprisingly reveals that to this day he has never received a call from Warner Bros. Television informing him he was fired – he learned his fate from social media and news outlets. He says his last conversation with studio president Peter Roth arrived after news first surfaced of the on-set issues:

“He said, ‘Clayne, I can’t promise you that I can save your job, but what I can tell you is that you have to make a public announcement apologizing, publicly, to Damon Wayans’. I was like, ‘What the f—? Peter, why would I apologize publicly because he and I had a riff on set?’ And he’s like, ‘Clayne, that statement alone tells me you don’t want to come back… If I were you, I’d look your children in the eyes, and I’d look your wife in the eyes, and you need to make a decision, but again I can’t promise you that I can save your job.”

He also addressed two on-set incidents, one during a location shoot in a park during which he shouted at the assistant director over noise issues on the set:

“I knew that they had those tapes, and they had been blackmailing me with that… anytime I had a problem with [Damon Wayans]. When the incident happened, I had to pay half of my salary for that episode, I had to spend six weeks in anger management every day on my lunch break, and I had to be escorted to and from set by a security guard, so it was humiliating.”

He adds the allegation that he was yelling at children at a nearby pool that day isn’t true:

“[A] blatant f–king lie… Clearly I’m yelling at the guy whose job it is to get the set quiet. Here’s the thing: Did I make a poor choice? Absolutely, and I felt embarrassed in the moment because I was belligerent… Hollywood is very sensitive, so I should not have screamed and yelled, right, because it’s a bunch of very delicate flowers out there.”

Seann William Scott is coming onto the show as a new co-lead character opposite Damon Wayans. Scott is portraying Wesley Cole, an ex-CIA agent, war veteran and father who moves to Los Angeles to be closer to his child. “Lethal Weapon” returns September 25th.

Damon Wayans Is Leaving “Lethal Weapon”

damon-wayans-is-leaving-lethal-weapon-696x464.jpg

Actor Damon Wayans has revealed that he’s planning to leave FOX’s “Lethal Weapon” series, telling Eurweb.com that he plans to exit the drama once the thirteen episodes ordered by the network for season three are finished.

Fox renewed “Lethal Weapon” in May after Warners removed star Clayne Crawford from the show, replacing him with Seann William Scott in a new role. The dismissal and subsequent renewal followed a series of very public on-set conflicts involving Crawford and Wayans.

Today, Wayans told the outlet: “I’m going to be quitting the show in December after we finish the initial 13. So I really don’t know what they’re planning, but that’s what I’m planning. I’m a 58-year-old diabetic and I’m working 16-hour days… I’m done. Like Murtaugh said, I’m too old for this… I’m going to return to the stage and try to find my smile again.”

Asked if he was kidding, Wayans shakes his head and says “No”. Representatives for Wayans, Warner Bros. Television, and FOX have yet to comment. The show’s third season premiered late last month.
