James Mangold (“Logan,” “The Wolverine”) has come on board to direct a currently untitled film about the true story battle to build the world’s fastest racecar between the designers at Ford and Ferrari.

The action follows an eccentric, determined team of American engineers and designers, led by automotive visionary Carroll Shelby and his British driver Ken Miles.

The team are dispatched by Henry Ford II to build an entirely new automobile with the potential to defeat the perennially dominant Ferrari at the 1966 Le Mans World Championship. Jez and John-Henry Butterworth (“Edge of Tomorrow”) will work on the script.

Christian Bale is reportedly wanted for the role of Ken Miles and Matt Damon for Caroll Shelby. This isn’t to be confused with Fox’s previous attempt at a film about the subject, a project that Michael Mann and Joseph Kosinski were circling. That take is now being turned into a TV series by Legendary Entertainment and is based on different source material.

Mangold had originally been slated to make a drama about kidnapped heiress Patty Hearst, a project scrapped in the wake of complaints by the Hearst family. Mangold is also attached to direct an adaptation of Don Winslow’s best-selling crime thriller “The Force”.

Damon, Bale Considered For Ford Feud Pic

Matt Damon and Christian Bale are reportedly interested in playing the lead roles in “Logan” director James Mangold’s untitled Ford vs. Ferrari project.

The project deals with the battle for dominance between the two motor companies at the 1966 Le Mans World Championship. Damon is in talks to play Mustang designer Carroll Shelby while Bale is eyeing the role of his British driver, Ken Miles, both of whom are ordered by Henry Ford II to build the world’s fastest car.

Bale was once attached to play the Italian automobile entrepreneur Enzo Ferrari in a Michael Mann-helmed biopic, but was replaced by Hugh Jackman. That project remains in limbo, and this is a quite different beast altogether.

Jon Bernthal Joins Mangold’s Ferrari Film

Jon Bernthal is in negotiations to join Matt Damon and Christian Bale in James Mangold’s biopic drama “Ford V. Ferrari” at 20th Century Fox.

The story will deal with the battle between the two car makers to win Le Mans in 1966. Bernthal would play Lee Iacocca, a key marketing executive at Ford during the 60s and later a symbol of the resilience of the American auto industry when he headed Chrysler.

Bernthal is currently shooting the next season of Marvel and Netflix’s “The Punisher”.

Fox is delaying James Mangold’s “Ford v. Ferrari” biopic with Christian Bale and Matt Damon. That film was to open in the height of Summer on June 28th this year but will now take Kingsman’s old slot on November 15th – putting the film in the midst of awards season.
