“Bumblebee” Film To Be Set In 1980s

While this month’s “Transformers: The Last Knight” will spend its time jumping around various time periods with the majority of action set in contemporary times, it has been revealed the upcoming “Bumblebee” spin-off film will take place firmly at one point in the past – the 1980s.

Empire Magazine recently released an in-depth article on the budding Transformers cinematic universe and how the writer’s room mapped out the future of the franchise. Transformers World 2005 scored a copy and confirm that the “Bumblebee” movie is going to be a 1980s period piece. Doing so immediately separates this from the other “Transformers” movies both in look and tone:

“A Bumblebee spin-off, conceived and written by Christina Hodson, is being directed by Kubo And The Two Strings’ Travis Knight for a 2018 release. Set in the 1980s, it will feature considerably fewer Transformers, concentrating on the big, yellow star (who in the movies so far can only talk via snippets of radio broadcasts) and likely pitching a little younger, tonally.”

“Edge of Seventeen” star Hailee Steinfeld has been tapped to play the lead in the project which is scheduled to hit theaters on June 8th 2018.

Back to “Transformers: The Last Knight” and Anthony Hopkins has revealed that he can’t explain much of anything going on in the film – even though he stars in it:

“You’re not going to ask me to explain the plot are you? Because it’s so very complicated and there’s the whole mythology of four previous films that come into play. I have to admit, I don’t quite get all of it.

All I know is I play a highly educated, eccentric English lord. I had a terrific time making it. Mark Wahlberg was wonderful to work with, the locations were excellent (Northumberland, Norway, Arizona, the Isle of Skye and Stonehenge) and I showed up, put my costume on, said my lines and stayed out of trouble. That’s all I ever do. It beats working for a living.”

“Transformers: The Last Knight” opens in cinemas on June 21st.

Jorge Lendeborg Jr. Is “Bumblebee” Male Lead

jorge-lendeborg-jr-is-bumblebee-male-lead-696x464.jpg

Following his debut in “The Land” and a small role in “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” actor Jorge Lendeborg Jr. is in talks to play the young male led opposite Hailee Steinfeld’s main character in the “Transformers” spin-off feature “Bumblebee” at Paramount Pictures.

Travis Knight (“Kubo and the Two Strings”) is directing the latest installment in the franchise which is described as a period piece set in the 1980s. Steinfeld will play a tomboy who also holds a job as a mechanic after school when she encounters the yellow and black striped Autobot.

The project is the first spinoff in a proposed Transformers Cinematic Universe that will include prequels and spin-offs, these allowing for a different tone and style than the signature Michael Bay bombast of the main series.

“Bumblebee” is slated for a June 8th 2018 release. Lendeborg Jr. will soon be seen in “Alita: Battle Angel” and “Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda”.

Jason Drucker, Abby Quinn, Rachel Crow, Ricardo Hoyos and Gracie Dzienny are set to join Hailee Steinfeld and Jorge Lendeborg Jr. in the “Transformers” spin-off “Bumblebee” at Paramount Pictures.

Travis Knight helms the film which is set in the 1980s and follow Steinfeld’s character and a group of her friends as they team up to help the yellow and black striped Autobot. Christina Hodson (“Shut In”) wrote the script.

The project is the first spinoff in a proposed Transformers Cinematic Universe that will include prequels and offshoots.

Lorenzo Di Bonaventura, Michael Bay, Steven Spielberg, Brian Goldner and Stephen Davis are producing with a June 8th 2018 release planned.

Optimus Prime To Cameo In “Bumblebee”

optimus-prime-to-cameo-in-bumblebee-696x464.jpg

Actor Peter Cullen has confirmed that “Bumblebee,” the upcoming “Transformers” franchise spin-off, will feature at least one more Autobot than just the titular character.

Cullen, who has voiced Optimus Prime in the original 1980s cartoon and the current live-action film series, spoke with the CineMovie YouTube Channel this week and confirmed we’ll be “hearing his voice in Bumblebee”.

Cullen doesn’t outright confirm he’ll be voicing Optimus Prime so he might be doing another character, but the more likely possibility is an Optimus cameo.

Hailee Steinfeld and Jon Cena lead the cast of the spin-off which comes from “Kubo and the Two Strings” director Travis Knight and has been compared more to “The Iron Giant” than previous “Transformers” films.

“Bumblebee” will hit cinemas on December 21st 2018.

Bumblebee
Director: Travis Knight (“Kubo and the Two Strings”)
Cast: Hailee Steinfeld, John Cena, Pamela Adlon, Christian Hutcherson
Details: Assembling a writer’s room after the fourth “Transformers” movie came out, Paramount Pictures was determined to give the robots in disguise a cinematic universe in which more sequels along with spin-offs, prequels and more could be yielded. The first fruit of their labor showed up earlier this year with “Transformers: The Last Knight” which scored dismal box-office and critical reviews. The other put in the works was this prequel spin-off set in 1987.

In the film, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town where a young girl on the edge of seventeen (played by “The Edge of Seventeen” star Hailee Steinfeld) is trying to find her place in the world and discovers the battle-scarred and broken Autobot. The fact that “Kubo and the Two Strings” helmer Travis Knight is directing (the first time Michael Bay hasn’t helmed ) and the tone is said to be akin to that of “The Iron Giant” is great, but is it too little too late?

“Bumblebee” To Have A Quiet Opening

quick-news-bumblebee-dates-claws-elliot-promos-696x464.jpg

At the franchise’s height, the second “Transformers” film opened to $109 million in the U.S. ahead of a $402 million domestic and $836 million total box-office haul. By last year’s fifth film, it had sunk to a $44 million opening and a woeful $130 million domestic take, but overseas saved it in part with the ultimate global tally coming in at $605 million.

This year sees the spin-off film “Bumblebee” hit cinemas at Christmas, a spin-off that boasts a more impressive creative pedigree than its predecessors. Unfortunately very early tracking figures suggest audience apathy for the franchise is here to stay with Box-Office Pro reporting that according to long-range forecasts, the film is only expected to bring in $15-25 million on opening weekend.

In fact, it’s expected to open in third place behind both “Aquaman” and “Mary Poppins Returns” which are expected to take in between $40-60 million and $30-50 million respectively in that week before Christmas. The number is similar to the $22 million being estimated for the animated “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” opening less than a week before.

In recent times the site’s long-range tracking estimates have proven to be fairly good, though usually on the softer side of estimates with the final result for films like “Venom,” “The Nun” and “Halloween” coming in about 15% higher than the early estimates. Going into the holiday, the “Fantastic Beasts” sequel, “The Grinch” and “Ralph Breaks the Internet” are expected to dominate with all scoring openings in the $50-75 million range.

“Bumblebee” Quietly Rebooted “Transformers”

They haven’t officially said it before this point, but now a report at TFW2005 indicates that Hasbro and Paramount are planning to use last year’s “Bumblebee” as the launch pad for a new “Transformers” cinematic universe.

Previously, the film had only been described as a prequel. Currently still playing in select theaters, “Bumblebee” sits at $458.2 million worldwide and has been the best critically received live-action “Transformers” film to date.

That box-office figure is behind the disappointing $605.4 million worldwide that “Transformers: The Last Knight” earned in 2017, but “Bumblebee” came in at a notably cheaper price tag to make. The film was also set in 1987 so it’s not clear at this point what time period any follow-ups would be set in.
