Your thoughts on this episode.....

Tearful Ted, career burglar has broken into King's Farthing and steals Lord Collingford's croquet trophies .
Mrs Gowdie tells the police off a suspicious looking tramp hanging around previously. This was Ted in disguise, but suspicions fall on Catweazle, especially as Ted has stashed his ill gotten gains at Duck Halt.

Ronald Lacy as Tearful Ted and Derek Francis as the Police Inspector, two good character actors of the era raise this story.
It's a lot of fun, firstly as Ted turns up at Duck Halt and starts blubbing, something that Catweazle can't understand, a man crying and isn't sympathetic.
" thou blubbering blowfly you'll turn the milk. What wet eyed wiffler is this Touchwood"
Ted's modus operandi, a tramp, obviously alerts Cedric that the thief of the croquet cups was Catweazle and on finding them stashed at Duck Halt initially blames Cat, but Cat's innocence is apparent, and I suppose Cedric can't just return them then and there, it would be tricky to explain where he got them without falsely incriminating Catweazle, so they plan to return them to Kings Farthing that night.
Tearful Ted, now masquerading as a Policeman returns to Kings Farthing too, presumably to rob again as he thinks his booty is safe with Catweazle at Duck Halt .
There's a nice scene where Catweazle meets Ted again, but doesn't recognise him and talks about blasting the thief who filched the silver without realising the thief is with him.
The whole midnight high jinx around Kings Farthing, with the police, His Lordship, Cedric pretending to sleepwalk , and Catweazle all running around almost but not quite meeting each other was well choreographed. In the end all is well as the silver trophies are returned, all except a silver ink well shaped like a crab, that Catweazle stole, or as he tells Cedric , borrowed, just until he flies. We know what we can expect from this series, a lot more humour, and the main characters have now settled down.
Charles and Dotty are whimsical upper class tories, and are fairly clueless, Mrs Gowdie thinks she runs the place, and probably does, Groome is a character like Sam in series 1, scratching his head at what's going on, and inadvertently caught up in Catweazle and Cedric's antics.
9/10

I just found this thread on Ronald Lacy.....

I just started watching CATWEAZLE again yesterday after a fairly lengthy hiatus*. (*How I wish we had never heard that word in 1985)

The new format has indeed settled down and the cast all seem more relaxed as the episode plays out. I still think a certain magic is absent from the show now, but I guess it falls into the "Do you prefer season 1 or 2 of SPACE 1999?" category of viewing. So far I still prefer season 1 of this show, but thinking on it, at least this show has two very distinct halves and not all shows can say that, with some shows being 5 or 6 seasons of repetitive dullness. At least CATWEAZLE never outstayed it's welcome and left us with 26 breezy tales, before passing into television legend.

This episode itself is a standard tale, with a very good guest appearance by Mister Lacy, who shows what a good actor he was.

I agree that series 1 is better, but I think another 13 episodes on the farm might have lost a freshness.
This series gave us some good laughs, more varied stories and coming up are appearances by Ken Cope, Graham Crowden, Tony Selby.
Also I noticed that Carpenter slightly downplayed the importance of the boy character. Whereas Carrot drove the stories, he was central to almost every episode, Cedric basically puts right Catweazle's mess but doesn't instigate any of it.

Yes, there is definitely a different dynamic with this run.

I agree that 26 episodes on the farm might have got fairly stale.

I can't help but notice that this second run tends to get downplayed in the legacy of the show, with the farm run being remembered and acknowledged more, such as that documentary where they returned only to the farm.

That's a little unfair I think.
