Apple has done a deal with producers DHX Media for brand-new content based on the “Peanuts” franchise to be made for its as-yet-unannounced streaming service which will launch sometime in 2019.

The comics follow Charlie Brown and his friends, like his dog Snoopy, as they get into various adventures. The deal is said to begin with a series of short STEM-based animations with Snoopy character as an astronaut. That will be followed by new series, specials, and more shorts focused on the entire “Peanuts” gang.

Apple has yet to formally announce the service, but the tech company reportedly plans on offering it for free to current owners of Apple products. The news comes hot on the heels of Netflix teaming with Roald Dahl’s estate to make works based on his popular novels.

The Peanuts are great. I have the Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Halloween Peanuts specials on DVD. I saw one of the movies (I think it was Bon Voyage Charlie Brown) in the theater. I used to buy Peanuts comic books all the time when I was a kid. And the new Peanuts movie was not bad! Schultz is definitely not turning over in his grave with that one. I wonder what these new episodes will be like - although I’m not paying for another streaming service so if I can’t get them on my iPad I won’t watch it.

The only thing that slightly bothers me about the new Peanuts movie is how things seem to turn out okay for Chuck in the end. Schultz was pretty adamant about him never really getting a happy ending, more so not so bad endings. Him ending up having the little ginger girl liking him back at the end, while pretty cool, seemed a little un-Peanuts-like to me. But overall, I do really like that movie.
