What a great few moments of Doctor Who history! It still grips me even after all these years! Day of The Daleks grabs my attention immediately unlike anything the BBC make today!

Doctor Who's ex-script editor says classic series was 'made up as they went along'
"You didn't sit down and plan a season – you had to write the next script!"

"We were writing this stuff as it came... there was no serious planning of how the whole thing would be shaped," said Bidmead, speaking at a BFI event.

"It's not how you'd do the thing today, with a writers' room and proper planning of how the different stories were going to interweave with each other, and the through-line. We were really making it up as we went along!"

Bidmead was script editor for just the one series and said he finds it "extraordinary" that there's still continued interest in the work he did almost 40 years ago.

"You didn't sit down and plan a season – you had to write the next script!" he revealed. "You got that done, and then you had to do the next script... the turnover was so enormous that there was none of that sort of forward planning.

"It would've been amazing, but we never had that – we never had the budget, or the time... we were just kind of rushing it out."

Any 'themes' allegedly present during season 18 in particular can actually be credited to the fans, Bidmead insisted.

"The fans come along and they put the structure in for you!" he said. "That's so exciting, that's wonderful."

(In case you were wondering, season 18 "revolves around the theme of entropy, linking together all of its stories" according to the Doctor Who fan wiki – so now you know!)

And probably why I enjoyed it so much.

If there's one thing I disliked about New Who, it was the over-arching season plot every fucking year.

Once in a while is one thing, but it gets old very quickly.

Christopher Bidmead has some interesting points. I wonder what he would have said about Moffat. I’ve never seen an episode written by him though.

A documenary that caused a stir amongst fandom at the time of broadcast, owing the the "anorak" narrating it......
