Fox’s “Gifted” Storyline Tackles Missing X-Men

One of the major plot points this year’s “Logan” is that mutants had been dying out for years, and the X-Men themselves were effectively disbanded after the ‘Westchester Incident’ saw many of them killed.

Speaking about FOX’s upcoming “X-Men” TV series “The Gifted” at the TCA’s this week, showrunner Matt Nix says the new show won’t shy away from dealing with the X-Men universe and, in fact, the disappearance of the X-Men is a key element:

“In our world, one of the things we’ll be unpacking is the specific relationship of this group of characters to the X-Men. It’s in the trailer that the X-Men are gone. And that’s not a dodge like ‘The X-Men are gone and we’re never going to mention them again!’ We’re going to be exploring it. It’s a huge deal to these guys. It’s a huge deal in the world. It’s one of the central mysteries of the show.”

Does that mean this series will intersect with the X-Men cinematic universe? According to Nix…sort of:

“There’s a whole sort of historical mythology. There’s not going to be a situation where the television show is driving the movies or the movies are driving the television show, because the mythology that we’re telling specifically avoids that but it doesn’t avoid that by pretending the X-Men don’t exist or they’re just doing stuff over and no one pays any attention.”

Inspired in part by the comic storyline “District X,” the series follows a suburban couple whose ordinary lives are rocked by the sudden discovery that their children possess mutant powers. Forced to go on the run from a hostile government, the family joins up with an underground network of mutants and must fight to survive.

Stephen Moyer, Amy Acker, Natalie Alyn Lind, Percy Hynes White, Sean Teale, Jamie Chung star and check out a new trailer for the series which premieres October 2nd.

FOX Cancels “The Gifted” & “Rel”

FOX has decided not to renew both its “X-Men” spin-off series “The Gifted” or its comedy “Rel” after two seasons and one season respectively.

“The Gifted” is produced by Marvel Television, which currently has series like “Runaways” and “Cloak and Dagger” on Disney-owned Freeform and Disney-controlled Hulu. There have been no real conversations at this point but there reportedly is a slim chance for “The Gifted” to live on in the Disney family.

“The Gifted” was a low performer in linear ratings for FOX, the second season averaged a 1.1 rating in Live+7 – half the numbers of its first season. With FOX no longer owning its series, linear ratings will play a much bigger role in their renewal decisions from now on.

Multi-cam comedy “Rel” starring Lil Rel Howery premiered to strong numbers which dived after the premiere – the season pulled an average rating of 0.77 and a dash over 2 million total viewers per episode.

Fox has already renewed “The Resident,” “9-1-1” and much of its animation line-up for the Fall. “Gotham” ends this month, the fates of “Empire” and “Lethal Weapon” are still to be determined, and while “The Orville” hasn’t been renewed yet the indications are it’s getting a third season.
