Garland: Don’t Expect A “28 Months Later”

garland-dont-expect-28-months-later-696x464.jpg

Before he broke through with his directorial debut on “Ex Machina,” filmmaker Alex Garland was best known as a screen writer of numerous cult hits including “Dredd” and “Sunshine,” adaptations of “Never Let Me Go” and “The Beach,” video games “Enslaved: Odyssey to the West” and “DmC: Devil May Cry,” and the franchise horror films “28 Days Later” and “28 Weeks Later”.

In regards to the latter, there have long been rumors of a ‘trilogy capper’ which would understandably be called “28 Months Later,” though a rights dispute has caused some problems with the film’s progression. Garland, out doing promotion for his new sci-fi film “Annihilation,” says he doesn’t believe we’ll see another film in the series.

He revealed in a recent AMA session that there previously have been ‘kind of’ plans about where the franchise could go, but right now he says: “ doubt it will ever happen”. Garland has other work to occupy him in the future including his new eight-episode sci-fi series for FX, and he was also asked in the same session what comic he would like to be involved in a screen adaptation of to which he responded “Swamp Thing”.

Fuqua Once Again Could Direct “Scarface”

fuqua-once-again-could-direct-scarface-696x464.jpg

After exiting the project last year, filmmaker Antoine Fuqua looks to be back in discussions to helm the “Scarface” remake at Universal Pictures.

Fuqua previously bowed out over scheduling conflicts with the filming on “The Equalizer” sequel, with the studio then turning to David Ayer. Ayer then ended up parting ways due to his own scheduling conflicts, and with the delays that followed the chance for Fuqua to return opened up.

No official offer is reportedly yet on the table, but discussions are underway. Ayer, Jonathan Herman, and Joel Coen and Ethan Coen penned the script while Dylan Clark and Martin Bregman will produce.

Black Hole is a twelve-issue comic book limited series written and illustrated by Charles Burns and published first by Kitchen Sink Press, then Fantagraphics. It was released in collected form in 2005 by Pantheon Books. The story deals with the aftermath of a sexually transmitted disease which causes grotesque mutations in teenagers. Burns has said that the mutations can be read as a metaphor for adolescence, sexual awakening and the transition into adulthood.

Reception

The collected edition won the 2006 Harvey Award for "Best Graphic Album of Previously Published Work". Burns also won the 1998, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2006 Harvey Award as "Best Inker" for his work on the series. Black Hole won the 2006 Ignatz Award for "Outstanding Anthology or Collection". It was the 2007 winner of the "Essentials of Angoulême" award.

It was voted the third best foreign comic book published in Japan for the 2013 Gaiman Award presentation.[3]

In popular culture

The Knife album Silent Shout, along with the music video for the title track and some of the press photos, were inspired by Black Hole.

In the 2014 film Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, the human teenager Alexander (Kodi Smit-McPhee) gives his copy of a softcover collected edition of Black Hole to the Bornean orangutan teacher Maurice (Karin Konoval), as they form a bond important to the film's plot.

Film adaptation

In November 2005, the message board of the Comics Journal reported that Black Hole would be adapted to film by the French director Alexandre Aja. In March 2006, comics news site Newsarama reported that Neil Gaiman and Pulp Fiction co-writer Roger Avary would be adapting the screenplay.

In 2007, director Rupert Sanders released an abbreviated live-action adaptation of Black Hole on his website[7][8] as part of his pitch for the project.[9] It features actors Chris Marquette, Whitney Able, Diane Gaeta, Noel Fisher, and Nate Mooney.

In February 2008, Variety reported that the film would be produced by Paramount Pictures and directed by Academy Award-nominee David Fincher.[10] In October 2008, MTVreported that scriptwriters Gaiman and Avary had left the production, reporting that their script would not be used by Fincher – though no replacement scripwriter was announced.[11]In August 2010, David Fincher also removed his name from production of the film in order to focus more attention on directing The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy,[12] however as of October 2013 he was once more attached to direct Black Hole.

“Dope” and “Confirmation” director Rick Famuyiwa has signed on to write and direct a film adaptation of Charles Burns’ iconic graphic novel “Black Hole” for New Regency and Plan B. Arnon Milchan will produce.

Set in the Pacific Northwest during the 1970s, Hole follows a group of high schoolers who contract a mysterious, apparently sexually transmitted disease known as ‘The Bug’. As the syndrome causes physical mutations, it turns the teens into something else and the community is left to deal with the fallout.

The twelve-issue story was told over a ten year period and was then was collected into graphic novel form in 2005 with the work winning multiple awards. The likes of David Fincher, Neil Gaiman, Roger Avery and Alexandre Aja have all been attached to adapt or direct previous versions that didn’t get going.

Lionsgate’s upcoming reboot of the “Highlander” franchise is moving forward thanks to a new script draft from “Colony” co-creator Ryan Condal which everyone is reportedly very happy with and is ripe for potential sequels should it be a hit.

The project, which has been in development on and off for a decade, is set to begin pre-production later this year. Chad Stahelski will direct the film once he wraps the third “John Wick” feature which is currently filming.

The 1980s fantasy starred starring Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery and Clancy Brown as immortal beings, hunting down one another through the centuries and collecting more power. The film spawned four sequels and three television series.

Neal H. Moritz and Peter Davis are producing. Condal is also developing a drama series around “Conan the Barbarian” for Amazon Studios.

Kinberg To Helm Female “Logan’s Run” Remake

kinberg-to-helm-female-logans-run-696x464.jpg

Simon Kinberg (“X-Men: Dark Phoenix”) has closed a deal to direct “Logan’s Run,” the long in the works remake of the classic 1976 film which itself was based on the William F. Noland and George Clayton Johnson novel.

The premise sees a future utopian society that demands the death of everyone upon reaching a certain age in order to ensure resources are maintained in equilibrium.

Anyone who veers from that destiny is dubbed a ‘runner’ and is hunted by operatives known as Sandmen. Logan 5 is a Sandman who is forced to go on the run.

“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay” and “The Town” writer Peter Craig will pen the project which is expected to feature a female lead instead of a male lead. Kinberg previously says the property was being conceived as a potential franchise.

The likes of Bryan Singer and Joseph Kosinski have been attached to previous incarnations.

An animated feature starring The Spice Girls is reportedly in the works and is currently being shopped to potential production partners.

According to a source, all five members of the group have signed off on their likenesses being used for the superhero-themed movie working with a ‘girl power’ message.
