This is the best of its kind. The word jokes are hillarious.
The best part is Leslie Nielsen serious performance, it makes it extra funny(that was also Gene Wilders strength, he played his parts serious, which made it more funny. But thats a whole different discussion).

A thread about Airplane? Surely, you can't be serious.
Yes he is, and don't call him Shirley.

This one never fails to make me LOL on every viewing, and even the great set of Police Squad! films couldn't top it. It's spawned about a trillion knockoffs and none of them have ever come close to the gut-busting hilarity of the original. Best part is in knowing that Leslie Nielsen was able to realize a long time dream of being a goofy comic actor via this movie: apparently, he had wanted to do this sort of silly comedy from the beginning of his career, but as a contract player, Handsome Earnest Young Male Lead division, the studios wouldn't allow him near any material of that sort. Once he outgrew the HEYM category, he was so typecast in those sort of roles he couldn't shake them to play his heart's desire; so we can thank the inspired lunacy that hit on him for the part that allowed him to have a whole new life as a film funnyman for years after.
