Paramount Is Not Happy With J.J. Abrams

If Hollywood project development deals are marriages, then J.J. Abrams’ deal with Paramount is one of the most high profile in town.

Unfortunately it also means his ‘business philandering’ has become very public, with the filmmaker now twice dumping the opportunity to develop a new project to direct at the studio in favour of helming a “Star Wars” movie over at Disney.

A new report at THR goes into the decision by Abrams to direct “Star Wars: Episode IX,” and how that decision comes at a time when his ‘home’ studio of Paramount Pictures desperately needs a hit.

As a result of the choice by Abrams, Paramount CEO Jim Gianopulos is said to be “not happy” with the filmmaker, but didn’t have much choice but to accommodate his wishes. Paramount was also reportedly able to get Disney to pay up a one-time sum for the writer/director’s absence, even if it wasn’t much.

Abrams’ lucrative deal with Paramount ends next year and the studio hopes once the director has finished ‘Episode IX’ he will come back to Paramount to renew his deal.

J.J. Abrams Plans A New Sci-Fi Series

J.J. Abrams has reportedly penned a new sci-fi drama television series that is currently the subject of a bidding war between Apple and HBO.

The Live Feed reports that details of the project are being kept under wraps but it will deal with a world battling against a monstrous, oppressive force.

Abrams and Ben Stephenson will executive produce and while he’s produced a few series in recent years (“Westworld,” “Castle Rock”), this project would mark Abrams’ first TV writing effort since “Fringe” a decade ago.

Though Apple and HBO are the favourites, producer Warner Bros. TV is reportedly open to other bids.

Filmmaker Julius Avery (“Son of a Gun”) is in negotiations to re-team with J.J. Abrams and Paramount Pictures for the superhero film “The Heavy” at Bad Robot.

Daniel Casey wrote the script described as a subversive take on the superhero genre. Filming aims to get underway this year.

Australian director Avery helmed the World War II zombie movie “Overlord” which showed off its first footage at CinemaCon last week ahead of an October release.
