Not a cheery film by any means.

It just seemed to consist of characters philosophising about violence to one another endlessly - for two hours.

I don't recall one moment of humour. Just more philosophising.

In the end I was just waiting for it to finish so that I could leave the cinema.

I don't know what the three other people in the cinema thought.

They seemed to be in some kind of coma when I left.

“Bleach” Creator Talks Failed Adaptation

bleach-creator-talks-failed-adaptation-696x464.jpg

Hollywood has had immense difficulty adapting anime properties into live-action features in recent years, as seen with the critically slammed and financially disappointing corpses of the likes of “Ghost in the Shell,” “Speed Racer,” “Dragonball Evolution” and “Death Note”.

In fact at one time Warner Bros. Pictures had plans for a live-action film based on the property “Bleach,” and recently creator Tite Kubo spoke to TBS Radio (via CBM) about the aborted adaptation and how he himself had a hand in stopping it coming to fruition.

The manga follows hotheaded teenager Ichigo Kurosaki who inherits his parents destiny, after he obtains the powers of a Soul Reaper. He’s forced to take on the duties of defending humans from evil spirits and guiding departed souls to the afterlife, putting him on a journey to various ghostly realms of existence.

Kubo says production was progressing fairly well, but the screenplay “hadn’t really gotten together”. Both the possible director and lead actor came to Japan and had dinner with him to talk about the property and Hollywood was willing to spend big bucks on it.

However the studio needed to impress its financiers and so were turning the adaptation into something it should not be – such as setting it in a traditional US high school: “It is a good story, but it doesn’t not have anything to do with Bleach.”

Kubo confirms he asked for multiple screenplay corrections, but the handling was not organized well. Eventually Warners lost the rights to the property since Kubo would not okay its development. Since then there’s been no further word on an adaptation in development.

Went to see the live action adaption of TOKYO GHOUL earlier tonight and found it well made and entertaining. The only weak point was some cgi that would have been fine a decade or more ago, but looks somewhat ropey now.

This rough edge is more than compensated for by good direction and very good performances.

It had been some time since we had seen the anime, so could not remember the details of storyline, but it seemed faithful to that adaption, and presumably the manga, in it's main points.

Next up soon, hopefully, is a trip to see GODZILLA: MONSTER PLANET.

Off topic, but SHIN GODZILLA, a recent live action film, was okay too.....

How in the name of Moses Horowitz did a live action version of Tokyo Ghoul escape me? I must see this post haste! Damn!

A friend gave me a copy of Shin Godzilla for Christmas, and I still haven't watched it. I think I will have to do that back-to-back with the new Netflix anime.

And I haven't see this one yet, but it looks promising. And I love the original anime it's based on, so here's hoping.

Netflix Sets “Fullmetal Alchemist” U.S. Release

netflix-sets-fullmetal-alchemist-us-release-696x464.jpg

Following its theatrical run in Japan late last year, streaming giant Netflix has announced a February 19th U.S. release for the live-action adaptation of the iconic anime and manga franchise “Fullmetal Alchemist”.

The story follows two brothers, Alphonse and Edward, whose mother passed away when they were children and they live in a world where alchemy exists. Their attempts to bring back their mother doesn’t work out – leading them on a quest to obtain the Philosopher’s Stone and repair the damage they’ve done.

The film is NOT a Netflix Original, as was done with the U.S. adaptation of “Death Note,” simply a worldwide release of a Japanese theatrical property – not unlike the animated “Godzilla” film last year which recently hit Netflix.

Japanese Trailer: Manga Adaptation “Bleach”

japanese-trailer-manga-adaptation-bleach-696x464.jpg

Warner Bros. Japan has released the teaser trailer for “Bleach,” the upcoming live-action movie adaptation of the famed manga series by Tite Kubo which was previously turned into an internationally successful anime series which concluded in 2016.

Set to hit Japanese screens in July this year, Shinsuke Sato helms the film which stars Sota Fukushi as Ichigo Kurosaki and Hana Sugisaki as Rukia with the clip a recreation of a notable scene from the anime’s pilot in which Rukia is caught by a ‘hollow’ and stabs ginger-haired teen Ichigo to transfer her powers.

A potential international release for the work has not yet been announced.
