A new profile piece on Amber Heard in THR reports that early box-office tracking figures for “Aquaman” have been so good that they’ve given Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich: “enough confidence to begin talks on a sequel”.

No writer has yet been commissioned, but it appears internal talk of a follow-up has already begun.

James Wan Not Contracted For “Aquaman 2”

Filmmaker James Wan has confirmed that despite the promising box-office estimates, the success of the film in China and the strong reviews, he has not been signed up for a sequel to the DC Comics adaptation “Aquaman”.

Wan tells Variety: “This is my only one that I’ve signed up to do. We’ll see. Let’s not talk about sequels before this one’s even come out yet.” Wan spent much of the past two years in production on the underwater superhero adaptation.

The lack of signing up a director for the sequel is familiar to Warners who famously didn’t sign up Patty Jenkins for a “Wonder Woman” sequel and so had to pay out a truckload of money to get her back after the first film proved such a success.

James Wan Awaiting “Aquaman 2” Script

Warner Bros. Pictures is reportedly trying to get director James Wan back for the inevitable sequel to “Aquaman” following the film’s billion-dollar success at the global box-office over the past month or so.

The film, which is poised to supplant “The Dark Knight Rises” as the top-grossing film in the DC Universe, is closing in on $1.07 billion as of last weekend and understandably the studio is keen for more.

Deadline reports that Wan will oversee the development of a second film, including the selection of writers, but will only make a decision on whether to direct it when he sees the script. Wan spent years working on the first one which shot over six months in Australia, Morocco, Italy and Canada.

“Aquaman” is presently in cinemas.

“Aquaman” Scribe Returns For The Sequel

Warner Bros. Pictures has set “Aquaman” screenwriter David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick to pen a treatment for the sequel.

Will Beall and Johnson-McGoldrick co-wrote the first film from a story by Beall, Geoff Johns, and James Wan. Johnson-McGoldrick previously worked on AMC’s “The Walking Dead” and “The Conjuring 2”.

Wan is reportedly making his own deal to return for “Aquaman 2” as an executive producer alongside Peter Safran, but whether he’ll be back as the director is uncertain at this time.

The project is separate from the proposed spin-off film centering around the sea monsters in the film The Trench. Wan and Safran are producing that.

Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Films have announced that a December 16th 2022 release date has been set for the “Aquaman” sequel.

The sequel will bring back star Jason Momoa, but almost all other details are under wraps at this point including director and other cast mates. It is confirmed that David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, who co-wrote the first film, is back for the follow-up.
