A Third “Bad Boys” Isn’t Going To Happen?

After first confirming that pre-production was underway three years ago, actor Martin Lawrence has now revealed that he thinks a third entry in the “Bad Boys” franchise is not going to happen.

The film, titled “Bad Boys for Life,” was set to have Lawrence and Will Smith reprise their iconic roles of Detectives Marcus Burnett and Mike Lowery in a Joe Carnahan-scripted sequel.

Two years ago Sony was bullish on the possibility, scheduling an early 2017 release and even slating a July 2019 release date for a fourth film. However things kept being delayed, the film’s director exited and then the project was officially removed from Sony’s release slate of forthcoming feature length productions.

Speaking with EW, Lawrence has now effectively said the film is dead: “I don’t think we’re going to get one, not the way everything’’ turning out, Will is off doing another movie, and I don’t think it’s going to happen.”

Smith’s immediate schedule includes the “Suicide Squad” sequel and spin-off, Disney’s “Aladdin,” and promotional rounds for “Bright”.

“Bad Boys 3” Revived With A New Writer

Just two weeks ago, actor Martin Lawrence revealed that he thinks a third entry in the “Bad Boys” franchise isn’t going to happen.

Lawrence and Will Smith had been slated to reprise their iconic roles of Detectives Marcus Burnett and Mike Lowery in the film which boasts a script by Joe Carnahan.

Sony was eagerly pushing the project two years ago, but as things never seemed to get going it kept being delayed and then recently it was officially removed from Sony’s release slate of forthcoming feature length productions. That led to the Lawrence quote.

Today though producer Jerry Bruckheimer has offered a more optimistic take on the future of “Bad Boys for Life,” telling Yahoo Movies! that a new scribe has just come onboard:

“Well, we’ve been developing it for I don’t know how many years now and we had a period of time where it got pretty close and then it drifted away a little bit and hopefully it will drift back again. We have a new writer on it who’s working on it right now, so that gives me encouragement.”

The first and second “Bad Boys” saw a gap of eight years between them. This year it will be fourteen years since the second film opened in cinemas.

Third “Bad Boys” Scores New Directors

Sony Pictures is having another go at a third “Bad Boys” film with Moroccan filmmakers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (“Gangsta,” “Snowfall”) in early negotiations to helm “Bad Boys for Life” which would reunite Will Smith and Martin Lawrence.

Smith and Lawrence played Miami police detectives in the first two installments, which were directed by Michael Bay and took in a collective $414.7 million worldwide. A third “Bad Boys” has been in development for years, with Joe Carnahan most recently attached to direct before exiting last March.

The newest draft of the script was written by Chris Bremner and should things proceed as planned, the film will go into production in August. Jerry Bruckheimer will produce the film.

El Arbi and Fallah are also currently attached to “Beverly Hills Cop 4”.

Bad Boys 3

Noted cinematographer Benoit Debie (“Spring Breakers,” “Enter the Void”) has signed on as director of photography on the long in the works third “Bad Boys” film which Belgian directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are directing. The hiring confirms this is looking to be a very different take on the series than the two previous Michael Bay adaptations.

“Bad Boys 3,” “Bright 2” Set Filming Dates?

A new report over at Geeks Worldwide indicates that filming on the sequel to Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Entertainment’s “Suicide Squad” sequel has been delayed, and so other projects with Will Smith slated to star in them are quickly readying themselves to fill in that scheduling gap.

The site indicates the long in the works “Bad Boys for Life” will be Smith’s next project with Sony reportedly making the film a top priority and shooting rapidly readying itself to begin in November with locations in Miami and Atlanta. Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah came onboard as directors in January with plans at the time for a very early 2020 release, a goal the film could reach if the report is accurate.

The report also suggests that Smith will jump directly from finishing that in March next year into working on the sequel to Netflix’s “Bright” in Germany. David Ayer is returning to direct and is writing the screenplay this time around. Filming on the “Suicide Squad” sequel was to begin this Fall, but now indications are it won’t begin filming until late in 2019.

Smith will have a busy year as he also has to do promotional rounds in May for Disney’s live-action “Aladdin” film in which he plays the Genie, and for the Ang Lee-directed thriller “Gemini Man” which he recently wrapped and which opens in October. That film he plays an assassin being hunted by a twenty-five years younger clone of himself.

After many years of near starts and delays, Sony Pictures appears to be finally moving forward on “Bad Boys for Life” with the project finally about to hand out a green light to the third film in the series starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence.

The film sees the triumphant return of the two Miami Police Department officers as they tackle a brand-new adventure and the studio aims to be in production by early 2019 ahead of a January 2020 release.
Columbia Pictures president Sanford Panitch tells Variety: “If we’re going to make another ‘Bad Boys’ after 15 years, it’s got to be next-level great.” “Snowfall” director Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are helming the project

Jacob Scipio (“Hunter Killer”) will play the villain and Paola Nunez (“The Son”) has scored a key co-starring role opposite Will Smith and Martin Lawrence in “Bad Boys for Life” at Sony Pictures.

The story centers on the Miami P.D. and its elite AMMO team’s attempt to take down drug cartel head and cold-blooded killer Armando Armas (Scipio).

Nunez will portray Rite, a tough and funny criminal psychologist who is the newly appointed head of AMMO and Mike’s former girlfriend – the one who got away.

The pair joins the recently announced Vanessa Hudgens, Alexander Ludwig, and Charles Melton as a modern, highly specialized police unit that collides with the old school Bad Boys (Smith and Lawrence) when a new threat emerges in Miami.

Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah direct the film which goes into production next month in preparation for a January 17th 2020 release.

Some more details about the story for the upcoming “Bad Boys for Life” have emerged with the long-awaited sequel to the two Michael Bay action films finally heading into production ahead of an early 2020 release.

Adil Arbi and Bilall Fallah helm this third entry which sees the return or Will Smith’s Mike Lowery and Martin Lawrence’s Marcus Burnett along with Joe Pantoliano as the always angry Captain Howard.

Production Weekly reports that the new film will see the Miami police department assembling an elite team called AMMO that has been tasked with taking down drug cartel leader Armando Armas (Jacob Scipio) – a cold-blooded killer with a vicious, taunting nature. Armas’ equally ruthless mother has tasked him with killing Mike Lowery, though the reason for doing so isn’t clear as yet.

At the same time, the AMMO team is lead by a tough and funny criminal psychologist named Rite (Paola Nunez) who also happens to be Mike’s ex-girlfriend, the one who got away. Alexander Ludwig, Vanessa Hudgens and Charles Melton also star in the film as other members of the AMMO team.

Joe Carnahan, Peter Craig and Chris Bremmer penned the script for the film which opens January 17th 2020.
