“Beetlejuice” Sequel Scores A New Writer

Mike Vukadinovich (“Rememory”) has been brought in to pen a re-write of the horror comedy sequel to Tim Burton’s iconic 1988 dark comedy classic “Beetlejuice” at Warner Bros. Pictures.

The sequel has been in development for many years and seemed to pick up steam back in 2013 before tapering off again.

Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg are set to produce the project, but no deals are yet in place with Burton or original star Michael Keaton. Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis and Winona Ryder also starred.

    I think there's potential there.

Don’t Expect A “Beetlejuice” Sequel Anymore

Ever since Tim Burton’s iconic 1988 supernatural comedy “Beetlejuice” hit cinemas, there’s been talk of a sequel. One seemed to be in development in the early 1990s and then drifted away into nothing.

Then, first in 2013 and later in 2016, the idea picked up steam again with the cast and studio reportedly talking about it and writers such as Seth Grahame-Smith and Mike Vukadinovich attached. At last report a bit over a year ago, Warner Bros. Pictures was still actively developing the film.

Today though, USA Today (via Bloody Disgusting) says the studio is no longer working on the film with a spokeswoman saying: “The project isn’t in active development.” Burton was then asked what’s going on to which he replied: “Nothing, nothing. I don’t know. I doubt it [will happen].”

Larry Wilson, one of the original film’s writers, also told the outlet: “The bottom line is, Tim Burton and Michael Keaton are not going to think about a Beetlejuice sequel unless it somehow catches the energy of the first film. And that’s not easy. Beetlejuice really was lightning in a bottle. But there have been discussions since it really shocked everyone in 1988. And in terms of Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian, wiser heads prevailed. Thank God there’s a level of integrity here.”

Burton, Keaton and even Winona Ryder have all expressed interest in coming back in recent years, but it looks like they’ve not had much luck so far.
