Billionaire Boys Club
Director: James Cox (“Wonderland,” “Highway”)
Cast: Ansel Elgort, Taron Egerton, Kevin Spacey, Cary Elwes
Details: One of two projects this year left in question due to the downfall of Kevin Spacey, director James Cox spent many months researching and writing this film based on court documents, oral transcripts, and published articles for a film he describes as: “What if ‘Wall Street’ became ‘Alpha Dog’ halfway through?”

The true story tale follows a group of rich young boys in Los Angeles during the early 1980s who started the Billionaire Boys Club to run a Ponzi scheme – leading to deadly consequences for those around them. “Baby Driver” and “Kingsman” alum Ansel Elgort and Taron Egerton lead a cast that includes Cary Elwes as Andy Warhol along with Jeremy Irvine, Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, Judd Nelson (playing the father of the character he played in the 1987 mini-series), Bokeem Woodbine, and Rosanna Arquette. Shot two years ago, its fate already looked uncertain pre-Spacey. Now? Who knows.

Spacey’s “Boy’s Club” Opens To $500 Only

Its got hot young talent like “Baby Driver” star Ansel Elgort and “Kingsman” lead Taron Egerton along with solid supporting names like Emma Roberts, Jeremy Irvine, Billie Lourd, Cary Elwes and Judd Nelson.

But ensemble crime-drama “Billionaire Boys Club,” which also has the disgraced Kevin Spacey in a key supporting role, proved a massive dud at the box-office. The indie film, which has already been available for rental via premium VOD services for several weeks now, opened Friday in eight theaters scattered in select states across the U.S. and is set to pull in an estimated $500 for the full weekend.

That’s a $63 per-screen average – meaning only seven people showed up in each cinema over the three days. It’s by far the worst showing for all involved in the project. The film is based on the real-life club of the same name that made headlines in Southern California in the 1980s with Spacey playing Beverly Hills high-roller Ron Levin.
