Coogler Wanted Back For “Black Panther 2”

With the film on course to earn up to $180 million over the four day weekend, it’s understandable that Marvel Studios is riding high on “Black Panther” right now and so expect news of a sequel to it sooner rather than later.

In fact in a recent interview with Variety, Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige said the company “absolutely” wants to get writer/director Ryan Coogler back. Asked if he thinks the “Creed” filmmaker would return, he responded: “I hope so.”

Feige was also asked how many more “Black Panther” movies we could see:

“We always say we work on one movie at a time. If you have any good ideas, put it in the movie you’re making. If you don’t, you might not be able to make another one. That said, Panther has been around for more than half a century in the comic books and there are many, many stories to tell.”

The film has already opened in select overseas markets this week and has already pulled in over $23.2 million.

Given the word of mouth this has already received I'm surprised a sequel wasn't announced even before this was released.

Advice that a great many studios could benefit from listening to.

Coogler Wanted To Helm “Black Panther 2”

While “Avengers: Infinity War” will feature a return trip to Wakanda and the involvement of many characters from “Black Panther,” those involved have very specifically stated this is certainly not an unofficial “Black Panther 1.5” in the same way that “Captain America: Civil War” was an unofficial “Avengers 2.5”.

The true “Black Panther” sequel is in development, and in a new interview with Collider, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige says that he hopes that the first film’s director Ryan Coogler comes back to sit in the director’s chair and that negotiations are actively underway:

“We definitely want Ryan to come back and that’s actively being worked out right now. When will it be? A lot of it will be when Ryan wants to and not rushing anything, but I think we have an idea of when it will be. But, again, [we’re] not going to announce any post-Avengers 4 movies until hopefully after Avengers 4, which is another reason we’re not going to Comic-Con.”

Coogler was instrumental in the first film’s success, but as “Creed” showed he’s willing to step away from a sequel should something else catch his interest. The first “Black Panther” has already passed “Titanic” to become the third-highest domestic grosser of all time so Coogler getting a hefty pay raise is likely for the follow-up.

“Black Panther 2” has yet to lock down a release date.

Filmmaker Ryan Coogler has signed on for the “Black Panther” sequel, returning to write and direct the follow-up to his 2018 critical and box-office hit at Marvel Studios and Disney Pictures.

The deal reportedly took some time to come together, but the filmmaker will begin penning the script next year with production expected to start in late 2019 or early 2020.

The first film became the third biggest movie of all time domestically with over $665 million, and racked up $1.3 billion worldwide.

Coogler is also still developing the indie drama “Wrong Answer” starring Michael B. Jordan, along with producing the upcoming “Creed” and “Space Jam” sequels.

In terms of MCU films “Black Widow” and “The Eternals” are seemingly set for next year, “Shang-Chi” and “Doctor Strange 2” for 2021, and “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3” for 2022 with further “Black Panther,” “Spider-Man” and “Captain Marvel” sequels likely.
