First Look: Rami Malek As Freddie Mercury

A first official look has been released of “Mr. Robot” star Rami Malek as Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in Bryan Singer’s upcoming biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” at 20th Century Fox, GK Films and New Regency.

EW premiered the photo from the film which chronicles the formation of Queen in the 1970s through to the band’s iconic performance at Live Aid in 1985, six years before the singer died of complications from AIDS.

Parts of the movie that features singing will utilize either Malek’s own voice or recordings of Mercury, with a sound alike filling in the gaps. Malek tells the outlet:

“We’re going to use Freddie as much as possible and use myself as much as possible. I’m in Abbey Road [Studios] right now if that should say anything to you. I’m not working on my acting.”

Singer says his approach is to honor the music, but it won’t shy away from some of the darker aspects of Mercury’s life. Anthony McCarten (“The Theory of Everything”) penned the most recent draft of the film which opens Christmas Day 2018

Bryan Singer: Illness forces director to stop work on Freddie Mercury film

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-42193912

Production on the new Freddie Mercury biopic has been suspended so director Bryan Singer can deal with "a personal health matter".

The film, titled Bohemian Rhapsody, will tell the story of the late Queen frontman's life.

Twentieth Century Fox told the BBC work had been temporarily halted "due to the unexpected unavailability" of Singer.

The director's representative said it was "a personal health matter concerning Bryan and his family".

A statement added: "Bryan hopes to get back to work on the film soon after the holidays."

Additionally there have been reported clashes between Singer and actor Rami Malek who plays Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in the film, with the director reportedly often turning up late on set. Joe Mazzello, Ben Hardy, and Gwilym Lee co-star in the film which has been filming in the U.K. and there isn’t expected to be a change in the December 2018 release date.

Bryan Singer Fired From “Bohemian Rhapsody”

Bryan Singer has been fired as director on the film “Bohemian Rhapsody” at Twentieth Century Fox and New Regency reports THR.

The decision follows a growing clash between Singer and the film’s star Rami Malek and was caused by Singer’s being absent from the set on multiple occasions – necessitating a production shut down on December 1st due to Singer’s “unexpected unavailability”.

Singer’s no-shows resulted in cinematographer Thomas Newton Sigel having to step in to helm some of the days while Singer was missing. Tom Hollander is also said to have briefly quit the film because of Singer’s behavior, but was persuaded to return.

Malek stars as Freddie Mercury, frontman of the rock group Queen, in the biopic which has been shooting in London. Singer had been warned before production began by Fox chiefs and the growing tension led to a confrontation between Singer and Malek which ultimately involved the director throwing an object.

Subsequently, the two are said to have settled their differences and filming was expected to resume until Singer did not return to the set after the Thanksgiving break and is believed to have been in the U.S. for the last ten days.

A trade insider says Singer has claimed he is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder because of the tensions on the set. The studio has now decided to terminate him under his pay-or-play contract and is expected to name a new director in the next few days to complete the last two weeks of shooting and post-production.

This footage was filmed by one of Freddies friends at Isleworth Polytechnic (now West Thames College) in West London during Freddie's first semester there...you can see that he is shy and a bit reserved....

Fletcher To Finish Up “Bohemian Rhapsody”

first-look-rami-malek-as-freddie-mercury-696x464.jpg

“Eddie the Eagle” and “Sunshine on Leith” director Dexter Fletcher has replaced Bryan Singer at the helm of the Queen biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” reports Deadline.

Production will resume next week with Fletcher directing the last two weeks of shooting and handling the film’s post-production. Rami Malek, Joe Mazzello, Ben Hardy, and Gwilym Lee star in the film which will cover a key period in the band’s history.

The hiring comes after Bryan Singer was fired from the production earlier this week. Singer didn’t show up on the set after the Thanksgiving break and, despite the change, the film is still on track for a Christmas Day 2018 release.

Bohemian Rhapsody
Director: Bryan Singer (“X-Men”) & Dexter Fletcher(“Eddie the Eagle”)
Cast: Rami Malek, Ben Hardy, Joseph Mazzello, Allen Leech
Details: Truth became wilder than fiction recently regarding this film, a biopic of legendary British band Queen and its late and great frontman Freddie Mercury. When it went into production, the concern was this would be an all too sanitised and whitewashed exploration of the band’s time due to the involvement of original members Brian May and Roger Taylor and a desire not to tarnish Mercury’s posthumous image in any way.

Originally attached stars Sacha Baron Cohen and Ben Whishaw both reportedly left the project because of concerns over this which were emerging in the scripting phase. Once Singer & Malek came onboard, everything seemed to be smooth sailing until a few weeks ago when Singer was fired and Dexter Fletcher, who was originally hired early on and left after a creative disagreement, came onboard to finish it. Right now it’s not clear what to expect from this beyond a strong performance from Malek.

Not easy to replace me, huh?
I think the correct phrasing should be "impossible to replace me".

As much as Queen have tried, there is no replacement for Freddie Mercury that would ever be anything more than a second rate imitation. And I say that regardless of the actual talent of any replacement. For example, George Michael is an incredibly talented performer and did a great job in the performances he did with Queen and I know Queen have toured extensively with Adam Lambert, but Freddie Mercury is irreplaceable.
