David Oyelowo is set to be a part of Doug Liman’s post-apocalyptic thriller “Chaos Walking” at Lionsgate. He joins a project that boasts an impressive cast roster including Tom Holland, Daisy Ridley, Nick Jonas and Mads Mikkelsen.

Based on Patrick Ness’ novel, the story is set on a planet colony where almost all women have been killed by a virus and all living creatures are going insane after being struck by The Noise – immersive visions of one’s every thought.

Holland plays a guy who discovers a girl (Ridley) who may be the key to understanding their New World. Oyelowo will play a villain.

Ness, Charlie Kaufman, Lindsey Beer, Gary Spinelli and John Lee Hancock all worked on the script. Allison Shearmur, Erwin Stoff and Doug Davison are producing. The film opens March 1st 2019.

Tom Holland Breaks His Nose…Again

Spider-Man is going to have a badly deviated septum by this point.

Actor Tom Holland, the current incarnation of the webslinger in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has reportedly broken his nose on the set of his new film “Chaos Walking”.

This marks the second time he’s done that injury during a film’s production, the first being while filming “The Lost City of Z” which opened earlier this year. He injured himself in Colombia when dared to do a backflip during his last day of filming.

The new injury hasn’t stopped him too badly as the actor has been tweeting and posting on social media as per normal. There’s been no report of any change or delays to the film’s production schedule.

Daisy Ridley, Mads Mikkelsen, and Nick Jonas co-star in ‘Chaos’ which is set in a dystopian world where women are supposedly all dead and the remaining living creatures can hear each other’s thoughts.

“Chaos Walking” is scheduled for release on March 1st 2019.

The first behind-the-scenes photo of Tom Holland (“Spider-Man: Homecoming”) and Daisy Ridley (“Star Wars: The Force Awakens”) has been released from “Edge of Tomorrow” and “American Made” director Doug Liman’s “Chaos Walking”.

An adaptation of Patrick Ness’ best-selling dystopian novel, the story is set on a dangerous world in which seemingly all women have been killed by a virus that has left the remaining creatures slowly going insane as they hear each other’s thoughts in a stream of images, words, and sounds called Noise.

Filming is now underway from a script by Charlie Kaufman (“Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind”) and Jamie Linden (“Money Monster”). The film is set for release on March 1st 2019.

Holland & Ridley’s “Chaos” Gets Major Reshoots

“Chaos Walking,” Doug Liman’s big-budget adaptation of the Patrick Ness young adult novel at Lionsgate, is reportedly undergoing significant reshoots.

“Spider-Man Homecoming” star Tom Holland and “Star Wars” lead Daisy Ridley head up the film set in a world where all women have been killed by a germ and all living creatures can hear one another’s thoughts in a stream of images, words and sounds called Noise. Holland stars as a boy forced to flee his town with his loyal dog who comes upon a strange sight: a girl (Ridley).

Lionsgate is spending between $90-100 million on the movie which wrapped in November and now has scheduled up to three weeks worth of reshoots. Trouble is, because of complicated scheduling issues with both actors the film will likely not be able to do those reshoots until the very end of the year – making its current March 1st 2019 release date an unlikely target.

Oscar-winning screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, John Lee Hancock, Gary Spinelli, Lindsey Beers and Jamie Linden all worked on the script and now Ness himself is reportedly in talks to write the new script pages. For those concerned, don’t fear as some of Liman’s best work from “The Bourne Identity” to “Edge of Tomorrow” all underwent major reworking and additional photography.

Chaos Walking is a young adult science fiction series by the U.S.-born British novelist Patrick Ness.

It is set in a dystopian world where all living creatures can hear each other's thoughts in a stream of images, words, and sounds called Noise.

The series is named after a line in the first book: "The Noise is a man unfiltered, and without a filter, a man is just chaos walking."

The series consists of a trilogy of novels and three short stories.

The three novels feature two adolescents, Todd Hewitt and Viola Eade, who encounter various moral issues and high stakes as the planet around them erupts into war.

The Knife of Never Letting Go (2008) begins with Todd being forced to flee his town after discovering a patch of silence, free of Noise.

In the second book, The Ask and the Answer (2009), tensions rise as a civil war between two opposing factions forms, and in the final book, Monsters of Men (2010) the indigenous species of New World rebels against the humans just as a ship full of new settlers is set to arrive on the planet.

The series has won almost every major children's fiction award in the UK, including the 2008 Guardian award, the James Tiptree, Jr. Award, and the Costa Children's Book Award.

Monsters of Men won the Carnegie Medal in 2011.

The series has been praised for its handling of themes such as gender politics, redemption, the meaning of war, and the unclear distinction between good and evil, all threaded through its complex, fast-paced narrative.

The first novel is narrated entirely by Todd, the second is told through the viewpoints of both Todd and Viola and the third book is narrated by Todd, Viola and The Return.

Conception

Ness claims that the idea for Chaos Walking came from "one really serious idea and one fairly stupid idea": how information overload affects youth, and how most fictional talking dogs "never actually talk like... I think dogs would actually talk".

Ness planned the series as a trilogy from the start, deciding to theme Knife about flight, Ask about tyranny and Monsters about war.

Film adaptation

Lionsgate acquired worldwide distribution rights to a film adaptation of the Chaos Walking trilogy, to be produced by Doug Davison's production company Quadrant Pictures.

Allison Shearmur and Davison are producers, Doug Liman will direct, and Daisy Ridley will star in the film alongside Tom Holland, Mads Mikkelsen and Nick Jonas.

The screenplay will be written by Ness, Charlie Kaufman and John Lee Hancock; shooting is expected to start in August 2017 in Montreal.

Young adult fiction adaptations have often struggled since “Twilight,” and this take on Patrick Ness’ work comes armed with a high concept that’s hard to explain. The dystopian novel is set on a dangerous planet in the far future in which all women have been killed by a germ and all remaining living male creatures can hear one another’s thoughts in a stream of images, words and sounds called Noise. Tom Holland stars as a boy forced to flee his town with his loyal dog who comes upon a strange sight: a girl (Daisy Ridley). The complexity and difficult to convey premise is well suited for Charlie Kaufman who adapted the initial draft of the script (though it has since been polished a few times), and director Doug Liman (“Edge of Tomorrow”) which holds promise, but extensive reshoots and some major delays are more concerning. Hopefully, it all comes together.
