Kristen Stewart Sought For “Charlie’s Angels”

Kristen Stewart and Lupita Nyong’o are reportedly being eyed for two of the three lead roles in the Elizabeth Banks-directed “Charlie’s Angels” reboot at Sony Pictures.

Casting is underway on the new film which is currently targeting a Summer 2019 release and hopes to relaunch the franchise for the studio. Banks, Elizabeth Cantillon and Max Handelman will produce.

Outside of the “Twilight” franchise, Stewart hasn’t headlined a major studio tentpole film since 2010’s “Snow White and the Hunstman”. She will soon star in the submerged post-earthquake disaster tale “Underwater”.

Stewart Teases New “Charlie’s Angels” Tone

the-new-charlies-angels-announced-696x464.jpg

Last month came confirmation that actresses Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska have been cast as the three new leads of the upcoming “Charlie’s Angels” film reboot at Sony Pictures.

Elizabeth Banks is set to direct and co-write the film, along with playing Bosley in a story which re-imagines the Townsend Agency as a worldwide security and intelligence service that has teams around the planet.

Speaking with ET (via THR) this week, Stewart talked about the approach being taken with the material this time around and says to expect a much more grounded take than the previous films which starred Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu:

“We are not trying to do an impression of the last one… The re-imagining is so grounded and well-intentioned and really shows the way women can work together now. It tries to be warm and funny, but it lacks a kitsch element that we have seen before that works so well.”

Jay Basu is co-writing the script while Max Handelman, Doug Belgrad and Elizabeth Cantillon are producing the film which hasn’t yet begun filming. Stewart has started fight training for the project though. At present the film is targeting a September 27th 2019 opening.

Patrick Stewart Is A Bosley In “Charlie’s Angels”

Patrick Stewart is in final negotiations to portray one of several Bosleys in the upcoming “Charlie’s Angels” reboot at Sony Pictures.

In the new version of the classic story, Charlie Townsend’s detective agency is now a security and intelligence film with branches all around the world. Bosley will be the codename given to Townsend’s liaisons who manage the individual branches and interacts with the titular Angels.

Elizabeth Banks, who co-wrote and directs the film, is also playing a Bosley in the movie which will focus on just one of those teams of angels – Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska.

Stewart has described the film as ‘super-woke’ and features ‘no objectification’ along with not trying to be a remake of the series or earlier films. She tells Indiewire: “I’ve never done such a fun movie. [It] was a lot of flouncing around joking, women supporting each other, not just kicking ass and being kitschy. It was so well-intentioned and warm and strong.”

The new “Charlie’s Angels” opens September 27th 2019.

Oscar-nominated actor Djimon Hounsou (“Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Furious 7”) has signed on to play one of the Bosley’s in the upcoming reboot of the “Charlie’s Angels” franchise at Sony Pictures.

The new take reimagines the Townsend Agency as a security and intelligence service that has teams of kickass women around the world. Bosley is now the codename for the handlers of each team, with Patrick Stewart and Elizabeth Banks also playing Bosleys in the movie.

Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska play the angels this time around with Doug Miro and Carlo Bernard co-writing the script while Banks helms the film. Gerardo Mendez and Jonathan Tucker also star.

For genre fans, Hounsou is about to be a very familiar face with supporting roles in the next three major comic book film adaptations – “Aquaman,” “Captain Marvel” and “Shazam!”.

Hard to believe its been nearly twenty years since McG’s film reboot of the “Charlie’s Angels” franchise hit screens. Quickly scuttled TV remake aside, Sony has been trying to reboot the franchise for sometime and so now is updating the concept for a new generation that goes so beyond woke it’s – I’m not sure there’s a word for it yet. Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska are the new Angels, though they’re not P.I.s working for a mysterious man this time, rather they’re employees of a multinational security firm which has multiple teams and multiple Boseleys who serve as the handlers of each team with Patrick Stewart, Djimon Hounsou and the film’s director Elizabeth Banks all playing one. Tha handsome line-up of Jonathan Tucker, Sam Claflin and Noah Centineo also star in the film which is aiming for an early November release.

First Photos: The New “Charlie’s Angels”

A new feature story is out in Entertainment Weekly showing off the first photos from director Elizabeth Banks’ upcoming “Charlie’s Angels” reimagining at Sony Pictures.

Banks reveals the project is NOT a reboot, but in fact a continuation which incorporates the events of both the original 1970s TV series and the McG-directed films in the 2000s. In this take camera-shy Charles Townsend, who was rich enough in 1976 to hire his first elite all-women crime-fighting team, is now so super rich he’s begun his own global spy agency.

That expanded roster includes the crew at the center of the new story: the hard-partying, highly skilled wild card Sabina Wilson (Kristen Stewart); the ex-MI6 muscle bound Jane Kano (Ella Balinska), and the MIT-trained scientist Elena Houghlin (Aladdin’s Naomi Scott) who serves as the heart of the movie.

Banks herself along with Patrick Stewart and Djimon Hounsou will all play Bosley, a name which is “now a rank in the organization, like lieutenants” with Banks shown in one of the photos helping Stewart’s angel gear up for a mission.

Banks made it a point to make the film about women working together and supporting each other, so don’t expect romantic entanglements or calls to mothers. The story is set in locations including Istanbul, Hamburg, and Berlin and the approach to stunts and action will be much more grounded than the 2000s films with the tone aiming to be akin to the recent entries in the “Mission: Impossible” franchise.

John Forsythe, who voiced Charlie Townsend in both the series and films, passed away in 2010. They’ve got a new voice which Banks says “will sound very familiar to you” but is also one who tries to emulate John Forsythe’s voice as best they could as “we want a real sense of continuity in the movie.”/

“Charlie’s Angels” opens November 15th.

Many, many, many years ago I caught one of the Charlie’s Angel films on a flight. I think I remember it had Lucy Liu and Drew Barrymore in it? Ugh, it was abysmal. Hopefully this one is better - not that I’m going to go out of my way to see it, because I never watched the show, but really, the one I saw was very, very BAD.
