“Warm Bodies” director Jonathan Levine and “Black-ish” creator Kenya Barris are teaming on a sequel to Eddie Murphy’s iconic 1988 comedy “Coming to America”.

Levine has been tapped to direct while Barris is writing the new draft of the screenplay, taking over from the original film’s writers Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield who penned a draft earlier this year.

The sequel has long percolated at Paramount, but it was only this spring that the studio made it official, with Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield, who penned the 1988 original, hired to write the follow-up.

No deal is in place as yet, but Murphy is said to be involved with the development of the sequel and is expected to star. Kevin Misher will produce.

“Hustle and Flow” director Craig Brewer, currently working with Eddie Murphy on the “Dolemite Is My Name” film at Netflix, will re-team with him for the long-awaited sequel to 1988 comedy classic “Coming to America”.

Murphy will return as Prince Akeem, who travelled from his wealthy African country to Queens in order to escape an arranged marriage and find a wife who will love him in spite of his title.

“Black-ish” creator Kenya Barris penned the most recent draft of the sequel, which would see Akeem learning about a long-lost son and returning to America to meet the unlikely heir to the throne of Zamunda.

Jonathan Levine (“Warm Bodies,” “50/50”) was previously attached to direct back in 2017. Murphy is producing.

“Coming to America Too” Clip Screened

After many years of being just a talked about pipe dream, the proposed sequel to iconic 1980s comedy hit “Coming to America” became very real today.

Paramount Pictures held their CinemaCon in Las Vegas earlier today, showcasing footage from “Terminator: Dark Fate,” the live-action “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie, the young vs. old Will Smith assassin film “Gemini Man,” and a sizzle reel with title cards for “A Quiet Place 2, “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Clifford the Big Red Dog” and a new “G.I. Joe”.

But one of the biggest responses to something shown came at the end when a clip was screened offering the first glimpse of Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall back in character in “Coming to America Too”.

The footage was said to be very short and revealed no real details but does confirm that the movie is finally happening and is currently filming. Understandably the crowd went wild.

Craig Brewer helms the project in which Murphy’s Akeem comes back to America after he learns he has a long-lost son, who becomes the unlikely heir to the throne of Zamunda. The film is currently targeting an August 7th 2020 release.
