“Crazy Rich Asians” To Top Labor Day Box-Office

It was expected romantic comedy “Crazy Rich Asians” would have good repeat business. Just how good though is surprising even its most generous prognosticators.

This Labor Day holiday will mark the film’s third weekend in cinemas with the movie projected to bring in $23 million Friday through Sunday and $30 million over the four-day period – bringing its domestic total to $118 million by the end of the holiday.

This is significant because not only will it be the fourth film of 2018 to top the box office three weekends in a row, but it’s not dropping off much at all. The film’s first three-day weekend was $26.5 million, its second $24.8 million and now with the third at $23 million – the film is showing off amazing audience retention suggesting plenty of great word of mouth and repeat business.

Overseas, “Crazy Rich Asians” is making headlines as it debuted in China was an utter bomb, taking just $1 million in its opening weekend. In fact, it’s faring so poorly that cinemas all over the Middle Kingdom are pulling the film and replacing it with other, more profitable titles. Chinese social media has also taken much offense to the Western portrayal of Chinese culture and its focus on negative stereotypes.
