“The Dark Tower” TV Series Is A Full Reboot
Sony’s film adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Dark Tower” novels yielded a critically slammed science fantasy western film that failed at the box-office. In stark contrast to the success of “IT” a month later, ‘Tower’ didn’t make a dent at the box-office – taking in just $112 million worldwide from a $60 million budget.
Despite the disappointment, a TV series based on the property is apparently still in the works. Earlier this year the film’s director Nikolaj Arcel was part of writing the show’s pilot and said that the show and film would be a part of the same canon. That may no longer be the case though with King himself telling Vulture that the small screen series will be a full reboot:
“The major challenge was to do a film based on a series of books that’s really long, about 3,000 pages. The other part of it was the decision to do a PG-13 feature adaptation of books that are extremely violent and deal with violent behavior in a fairly graphic way.
That was something that had to be overcome, although I’ve gotta say, I thought [screenwriter] Akiva Goldsman did a terrific job in taking a central part of the book and turning it into what I thought was a pretty good movie. The TV series they’re developing now…we’ll see what happens with that. It would be like a complete reboot, so we’ll just have to see.”
“The Walking Dead” showrunner Glen Mazzara has been hired to oversee the series which hasn’t yet set any target dates for production or premiering.
