“The Dark Tower” TV Series Is A Full Reboot

Sony’s film adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Dark Tower” novels yielded a critically slammed science fantasy western film that failed at the box-office. In stark contrast to the success of “IT” a month later, ‘Tower’ didn’t make a dent at the box-office – taking in just $112 million worldwide from a $60 million budget.

Despite the disappointment, a TV series based on the property is apparently still in the works. Earlier this year the film’s director Nikolaj Arcel was part of writing the show’s pilot and said that the show and film would be a part of the same canon. That may no longer be the case though with King himself telling Vulture that the small screen series will be a full reboot:

“The major challenge was to do a film based on a series of books that’s really long, about 3,000 pages. The other part of it was the decision to do a PG-13 feature adaptation of books that are extremely violent and deal with violent behavior in a fairly graphic way.

That was something that had to be overcome, although I’ve gotta say, I thought [screenwriter] Akiva Goldsman did a terrific job in taking a central part of the book and turning it into what I thought was a pretty good movie. The TV series they’re developing now…we’ll see what happens with that. It would be like a complete reboot, so we’ll just have to see.”

“The Walking Dead” showrunner Glen Mazzara has been hired to oversee the series which hasn’t yet set any target dates for production or premiering.

“Dark Tower” TV Series Now At Amazon

The planned TV series based on Stephen King’s “The Dark Tower” saga has found a new home with Amazon picking up the rights to the series.

Last year Amazon closed a massive deal for a TV series based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings” books, but that hasn’t stopped them picking up further literary properties with similar series takes in mind including Terry Pratchett’s “Discworld,” Neal Stephenson’s “Snowcrash,” Iain M. Banks’ “Culture” which was announced this past week, and now King’s “The Dark Tower”.

The recent film adaptation of the property was seen as both a critical and commercial misfire, though with a production budget at only $60 million and a worldwide box-office haul of $113 million the studio didn’t lose too badly on it.

Previously it has been reported that former “The Walking Dead” showrunner Glen Mazzara will take on the role here. The film’s director Nikolaj Arcel also previously revealed he wrote part of the pilot episode back then the plan was to have the film and TV series in the same universe.

With the film’s failure, it’s likely the series will be a complete reboot which is what King suggested last year saying: “The TV series they’re developing now…we’ll see what happens with that. It would be like a complete reboot, so we’ll just have to see.” Film star Idris Elba has said he’d be up for a film sequel but has no interest in a TV series version.

Amazon’s “Dark Tower” Series Gets Its Leads

British actor Sam Strike (“Nightflyers,” “Leatherface”) has been cast as Roland Deschain the Gunslinger, and Finnish actor Jasper Paakkonen (“BlacKKKlansman,” “Vikings”) is the Man in Black in “The Dark Tower” TV series for Amazon.

The Media Rights Capital-produced series was initially going to tie in with the 2017 film adaptation starring Idris Elba as Roland and Matthew McConaughey.

However, after that film’s critical and commercial failure it was decided the series will stand on its own as a more faithful adaptation of the sprawling world author Stephen King created across several books.

Glen Mazzara (“The Walking Dead”) will serve as showrunner on the project which is nearing a formal pilot order at the streaming platform after nearly a year in development at Amazon.

Is this a full fledged TV series or mini series?

This was meant to be a full-fledged TV series but has not been commissioned by Amazon and not been picked up by any other network, so it's only the pilot remaining.
