“Doctor Strange” Writer On Sequel Villains

Marvel Studios has yet to officially green light a “Doctor Strange” sequel, so it’s not sure if the film’s director Scott Derrickson and co-writer C. Robert Cargill will be back – though it seems likely.

Speaking at a Q&A following a screening in Austin this week, Cargill re-affirmed an earlier report that if it goes ahead then ‘Nightmare’ is set to serve as the film’s antagonist while Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Baron Mordo will also come back into play:

“Nightmare will be the villain. Me and Scott have not laid the groundwork for it but what I can say is that I have a feeling that whatever Nightmare is involved with, Baron Mordo, being somebody who considers himself the defender of natural law will have something to do with it.”

Cargill went on to say there are big plans for the character of Mordo moving forward:

“For those of you who have ever read the comics, you know that Baron Mordo has a very particular arc, and that’s something we discussed with Chiwetel while working on the first movie. And part of the reason Chiwetel wanted to play Mordo was because he has a definitive ending as a character and it’s such a fascinating ending.

And I do know that whether we’re attached or not, that Marvel plans on working towards that ending and fully realizing Mordo as more than just a cardboard cutout villain, but actually taking him to kind of Loki levels of awesomeness. That’s the goal with him.”

The Q&A was hosted by the charity Mobile Loaves which provides housing, food, and jobs for the homeless of Austin.

“Doctor Strange 2” Salary & Shoot Rumors

There have been rumors regarding a direct sequel to “Doctor Strange” and now a new report in UK tabloid The Mirror indicates that the film’s star Benedict Cumberbatch looks set to get a big salary increase should it go forward.

The outlet says Marvel Studios and Cumberbatch are in the middle of renegotiating his contract with the actor to make a little over $9.6 million for the film, more than the $5.4 million combined salary he scored for the first film, his “Thor: Ragnarok” cameo and his supporting role in “Avengers: Infinity War”.

The film is rumored to begin shooting in the spring 2019, meaning it would take the place of the third “Guardians of the Galaxy” which was to shoot early next year. With that likely delayed due to the director switch out, this could be moving forward instead.

There’s also an unnamed Phase 4 film to be shot in June next year, though that’s tipped to be the “Black Widow” film. “Doctor Strange” director Scott Derrickson has teased a sequel over the past few months, though Cumberbatch himself has indicated he’s unsure if the film will happen or not.

Scott Derrickson has reportedly quietly finalized a deal to direct a sequel to 2016’s “Doctor Strange” for Marvel Studios.

Derrickson directed and co-wrote the first film and now search for a writer to pen the script is about to get underway, no word if co-writer and Derrickson’s go-to scribe C. Robert Cargill will also return on that front.

Benedict Cumberbatch will return as Stephen Strange, the good doctor-turned-master of the mystic arts, as will Benedict Wong, who plays his right-hand man, Wong. Rachael McAdams, who played Stephen Strange’s love interest, is likely to return as well.

Timetable-wise the plan is to work on the script throughout next year ahead of a Spring 2020 start and early 2021 release. The first film grossed $677.7 million worldwide.
