I watched this this morning with the Phillip Glass endless violin music on it.

I gave up eventually. I was constantly aware of this soundtrack, which is never a good sign. It was actually a relief to turn it off and hear silence with the voices finally able to be crisply and clearly heard.

The problem with the music it seemed to me is that it was not used quite judiciously enough and just seemed to be lathered on for the sake of it, when sometimes a bit of silence is called for.

I will never think that this film is undernourished musically again.

Having said that, I do wonder what James Bernard of Hammer fame might have done with it. But maybe that would have been a bad fit too.....

I whole heartedly agree with you on the Philip Glass score. It's lovely, but it overtakes the movie.

The movie really is very good. I don't usually get too worked up about it straying from the novel since it's actually based on the stage play of the time. The acting is all around superb, with the most brilliant work coming from Lugosi as the vampire himself, Edward van Sloan as Van Helsing, and who could forget Dwight Frye in the role of Renfield? While not a technical masterpiece (George Melford would make a much slicker looking film, but with less memorable acting), it's still a wonderfully atmospheric piece of Gothic horror. I could watch this any time.

I saw that video about a year ago, and like you, had no idea there was cardboard in that scene. There are all sorts of glitches in the Matrix these days.
