In his penultimate film, Grant plays a tipsy, disagreeable beach bum who’s tricked by an old friend (Trevor Howard) into helping the Royal Navy (to monitor Japanese air activity) on a Pacific island during WW2. His life is then further disturbed by prudish teacher Leslie Caron and her group of female students (when they’re left stranded after a plane crash and end up spoiling his tranquillity).
Bright comedy with Grant in an atypical role, creating good chemistry with the always-waifish Caron. It veers toward over-sentimentality in the second half and the wartime backdrop is less than convincing, but as light diversions go, you won’t go far wrong
