Your thoughts on this movie....

Five medical students, obsessed by what lies beyond the confines of life, embark on a daring experiment: by stopping their hearts for short periods, each triggers a near-death experience - giving them a firsthand account of the afterlife.

Back to the original movie......

Rogue One's Diego Luna dies again and again in first trailer for Flatliners remake

But where the hell is Kiefer Sutherland?

Diego Luna and Ellen Page die again and again in the first trailer for the Flatliners remake.

The promising trailer follows Luna and Page's medical students, who along with fellow students played by James Norton, Kiersey Clemons and Nina Dobrev, attempt to understand life after death.

And, naturally, toying with death leads to some seriously freaky consequences.

The main thing we want to know from the trailer though is where is original Flatliners star Kiefer Sutherland?

He signed up to the new movie last year, later explaining that he plays a professor at the medical university, and it seems like he WILL be playing his original character of Nelson Wright.

"It is never stated but it will probably be very clearly understood that I'm the same character I was in the original Flatliners, but that I have changed my name and I've done some things to move on from the experiments that we were doing in the original film," Sutherland noted.

Like the 1990 original albeit with one extra student, Flatliners sees the students stop each other's hearts for a short period of time to trigger a near-death experience and give them a firsthand account of the afterlife.

However, as they push the boundaries of the experiment by 'dying' for longer and longer, they are haunted by the sins of their pasts and other paranormal things that they may have brought back from the other side.

Flatliners is released in cinemas on September 29.

I was never that struck on the original.

It is always difficult capturing an impressive afterlife on film, no matter what the budget. Shatner had the same problem, attempting to depict God. It just never works i.m.o. being only one director's interpretation. What Dreams May Come springs to mind as a memorable attempt. That had the clever conceit of people living in paintings after they pass. But again, it's just one person's idea. Visually stylish though.

Second International Trailer: “Flatliners”

Following a first trailer the other month, a new international trailer has arrived for “Flatliners,” what looks like a reboot but is actually a sequel to Joel Schumacher’s 1990 science fiction horror film of the same name.

Ellen Page, Diego Luna, Nina Dobrev, James Norton and Kiersey Clemons star in the new take which sees a new bunch of students trying the challenge of dying for a few minutes – only to start hallucinating after.

Kiefer Sutherland’s Nelson character returns but he’s not seen in the trailer. “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” and “Dead Man Down” director Niels Arden Oplev helms the film penned by Ben Ripley. The movie opens September 29th.

Given how tedious the original was, a remake might be a good idea.

I wish more mediocre films would be remade rather than classics. It can only get better then.

“Flatliners” Scores A Rare 0% Critics Score

flatliners-scores-a-rare-0-critics-score-696x464.jpg

This week’s “Flatliners” remake has earned a rare honor – scoring a disastrous 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 23 reviews so far.

The film’s average rating of 3.5/10 is slightly better, as is its 31/100 on MetaCritic, even so, it’s unanimously terrible reviews and a far cry from the 1990 Joel Schumacher-directed original which itself wasn’t held in high esteem with a 49% RT score. Several choice quotes about the remake are on offer such as:

“The original Flatliners should have had a ‘Do Not Resuscitate’ order attached to it.” – John Nugent, Empire Magazine

“A group of people who should know better find themselves eager for the cold embrace of death. But enough about the poor souls who bought tickets to Flatliners.” – Jim Slotek, Original Cin

“The do-over barely raises an eyebrow without getting winded, never truly understanding what it’s supposed to be doing with the wonderfully outrageous premise.” – Brian Orndorf, Blu-ray.com

“The reboot no one asked for of a movie no one much remembers has landed… and it’s dead on arrival, with nothing new to say and no new way to say it.” – MaryAnn Johanson, Flick Filosopher

Ellen Page, Diego Luna, Nina Dobrev, James Norton and Kiersey Clemons star in the Niels Arden Oplev-directed new film which wasn’t screened for critics. It wasn’t quite clear until the film’s release if this was a sequel or remake, but upon viewing it has been confirmed to be a remake.

Kiefer Sutherland, the lead from the original, has a cameo here and originally shot a single scene which hinted at events in the original – a scene that was subsequently cut before release because it confused those unaware of the original, so in its excision, it turns this into a remake. Said scene will be included in the deleted scenes on the disc.

Similarly Oplev told Cinema Blend recently that one key change made to the remake was that audiences these days couldn’t understand the original film’s conceit that these people were being haunted by someone who was still alive – so an explanation had to be put in to compare the experience more to a hallucination.

“Flatliners” is now out in cinemas.
