Sony Pictures have set a date for their live-action He-Man & The Masters of the Universe reboot but without a director, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Director McG, who has been attached to the project since 2016, has reportedly left the production just as a December 18, 2019 release date has been set.

Comic book movie veteran David S. Goyer, however, has reportedly been hired to write a new screenplay.

According to the Hollywood trade, Sony is currently meeting with various unnamed directors and actors for the film.

Last June, it was confirmed that Twilight alum Kellan Lutz met with the studio about portraying the titular lead, but no casting decision has been made.

VOTD: He-Man & Skeletor Go Dirty Dancing

While we’re still waiting on the live-action “He-Man and The Masters of the Universe” reboot to pick up steam again, price comparison website MoneySuperMarket has used the iconic Mattel characters as part of a new ad campaign in a clever way.

Running a full two-minutes, the company casts He-Man and Skeletor in roles akin to Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey in “Dirty Dancing” as they do the famed dance routine – albeit this version set in a rough roadhouse.

This commercial is the most recent entry in a series of ‘Epic Skeletor’ commercials which have the villain enjoying saving money via the medium of dance.

Goyer Drops Out Of “He-Man” Reboot

Writer/director David S. Goyer has dropped out of directing the long in development reboot of the “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe” property at Sony Pictures.

Goyer, who was reportedly in talks in November, never officially signed on to helm and now has shut down the possibility due to scheduling issues. He will, however, remain a writer and executive producer on the project.

Both Jon M. Chu and McG have previously been linked as potential directors on the film which is still aiming for a December 2019 release. Goyer is serving as executive producer on SyFy’s “Krypton” and is adapting Isaac Asimov’s “Foundation” trilogy into an event series.

Goyer is ... adapting Isaac Asimov’s “Foundation” trilogy into an event series.
I don't know whether to be excited or terrified about that. The idea of seeing a big budget Foundation movie is exciting. But we've yet to see anything of Asimov's produced into a movie that does justice to its source material.

Aaron and Adam Nee (“Band of Robbers”) have been set to direct the He-Man movie “Masters of the Universe” for Sony Pictures and Mattel. The film remains on track for a December 2019 release.

Based on the beloved Mattel toyline and iconic 1980s animated series, the story follows Prince Adam, who has the ability to transform into a warrior called He-Man. As He-Man, Adam becomes the last hope for a magical land called Eternia, ravaged by technology and the evil Skeletor.

David Goyer penned the script and while he’s had to pass on directing, he is reportedly extremely involved in the development of the film. DeVon Franklin, Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, and Steve Tisch will produce.

“He-Man” Reboot Story & Character Details

he-man-reboot-story-character-details-696x464.jpg

With new directors coming onboard the proposed “Masters of the Universe” reboot in the works at Sony Pictures, the new He-Man seems to be gaining steam and now That Hashtag Show has offered a casting breakdown revealing which classic characters will appear.

The new take will basically do for the franchise what “Spectre” did for James Bond – turn his nemesis into his brother. The new take begins with King Randor on the throne, the great warrior-king of Eternia and descendant of the Grayskulls.

He’s also the father of two sons – Keldor the chosen heir and a perfect son, and his younger black sheep brother Adam with whom Randor’s relationship is strained. However when the fate of Eternia is put on the line, Randor puts his people first and betrays Keldor – inciting the series of events that leads to him becoming the iconic Skeletor.

Adam then sets out to assemble a group of warriors to take down his brother including Duncan/Man-at-Arms who is the king’s right-hand man and weaponeer, Zodak who will be Adam’s mentor and the King’s Minister of Technology, and Teela who is Duncan’s daughter and Captain of the Royal Guard (and Adam’s love interest).

There’s also Orko who has been considerably changed into a small man filled with self-doubt, Stratos who rules over the Sky Guards of the Iron Gate Prison, Beast Man who is now a shape-shifter and useful spy for Skeletor, Evil Lyn who will be a powerful and intelligent witch, and Trap Jaw who will be a cyborg of some sort in this take.

The Nee Brothers are slated to direct “Masters of the Universe” which is currently targeting a December 2019 release. David Goyer penned the script while DeVon Franklin, Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, and Steve Tisch will produce.
