Jason Voorhees is the main character from the Friday the 13th series. He first appeared in Friday the 13th (1980) as the young son of camp cook-turned-killer Mrs. Voorhees, in which he was portrayed by Ari Lehman. Created by Victor Miller, with contributions by Ron Kurz, Sean S. Cunningham, and Tom Savini, Jason was not originally intended to carry the series as the main antagonist. The character has subsequently been represented in various other media, including novels, video games, comic books, and a cross-over film with another iconic horror film character, Freddy Krueger.

The character has primarily been an antagonist in the films, whether by stalking and killing the other characters, or acting as a psychological threat to the protagonist, as is the case in Friday the 13th: A New Beginning. Since Lehman's portrayal, the character has been represented by numerous actors and stuntmen, sometimes by more than one at a time; this has caused some controversy as to who should receive credit for the portrayal. Kane Hodder is the best known of the stuntmen to portray Jason Voorhees, having played the character in four consecutive films.[3][4]

The character's physical appearance has gone through many transformations, with various special makeup effects artists making their mark on the character's design, including makeup artist Stan Winston. Tom Savini's initial design has been the basis for many of the later incarnations. The trademark hockey goalie mask did not appear until Friday the 13th Part III. Since Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, filmmakers have given Jason superhuman strength, regenerative powers, and near invulnerability. He has been seen as a sympathetic character, whose motivation for killing has been cited as being driven by the immoral actions of his victims and his own rage over having drowned as a child.[5] Jason Voorhees has been featured in various humor magazines, referenced in feature films, parodied in television shows, and was the inspiration for a horror punk band. Several toy lines have been released based on various versions of the character from the Friday the 13th films. Jason Voorhees's hockey mask is a widely recognized image in popular culture.

Why The “Friday the 13th” Reboot Collapsed

Following 2009’s reboot starring The CW alum Jared Padalecki and Danielle Panabaker, attempts have been made in recent years to do yet another reboot of the iconic 1980s slasher franchise “Friday the 13th”.

Now, speaking with JoBlo, Platinum Dunes producers Brad Fuller and Andrew Form have revealed that they are dead-set on making the new film but reveal the current state of the project is still in limbo. Fuller says:

“One of the biggest heartbreaks of the last couple years was that we were about to make that movie and it fell apart. That still hurts. The fans reach out to us; Andrew doesn’t really engage because he’s not on Twitter, but I am and I hear from the fans and that’s all they ask about. We get asked about that more than anything else. Fans think it’s so simple, that if we want to make the movie we can go make it, and that’s just not the case.

There are rights issues; originally, Warner Bros. owned the rights, then Paramount had them for a couple of years, and now I think the rights are reverting back to Warner Bros. At the same time, there’s this on-going lawsuit with Victor Miller. If there’s a lawsuit hanging over the rights, it’s problematic, you can’t really make the movie until that gets settled. And now the movie is at New Line, and we’ve made a lot of movies with those guys, but that’s not our home studio anymore.

So the question is, [does New Line] want to make the movie with us? If they want to make that movie with us, we will drop what we’re doing to make that movie. We had such a great experience making Friday the 13th, it was a dream come true to watch those movies as a kid and then be a part of it. So I don’t really have a clear answer.”

Aaron Guzikowski penned the draft for the second reboot, a script that was well-regarded and was to be used until the project collapsed just weeks from filming.

“Friday the 13th” Lawsuit Rules For Scribe

“Friday the 13th” screenwriter Victor Miller has prevailed in a legal battle over the franchise. Miller aimed to take advantage of a provision of copyright law that allows authors to terminate a grant of rights and reclaim ownership 35 years after publishing.

The film’s producers alleged that Miller wrote “Friday the 13th” as a work-made-for-hire after film series producer Sean Cunningham came up with an idea to capitalize on the success of the then-recently released horror film “Halloween”. They asserted that Miller’s termination notice was ineffective.

Miller’s attorney Marc Toberoff argued that while the screenplay was clearly commissioned as part of a motion picture, there never was any writing instrument as required by law spelling out the screenplay was a work-made-for-hire.

U.S. District Court Judge Stefan Underhill has now granted summary judgment in favor of Miller and against the producers, saying the screenplay wasn’t a work for hire, not prepared within scope of employment, and that labor law doesn’t require holding that screenwriter was an employee. Instead, Miller was an independent contractor.

The decision has been pending for almost a year now, and the uncertainty over ownership has reportedly interfered with new sequels being made as well as tie-in works like video games. Miller’s victory suggests he will control rights inside the United States while producers control rights outside the domestic market where termination recapture isn’t applied.

If no settlement occurs and any appeal is unsuccessful, there could be future legal battles over trademarks and character use – but Underhill says the producers “may be able to stake a claim” to hold an independent copyright for the adult Jason character which is very different to the boy of Miller’s screenplay.
