Kilgrave Returns In “Jessica Jones” Set Photos

kilgrave-returns-in-jessica-jones-set-photos-696x464.jpg

Earlier this week came confirmation that David Tennant would be returning as the villain Kilgrave in the upcoming second season of “Marvel’s Jessica Jones” on Netflix.

Now some New York City set photos from the currently shooting season have been released and show Tennant alongside Krysten Ritter as Jessica and Eka Darville as Malcolm.

FIRST SEASON SPOILERS

Considering the events of the first season finale, many were wondering how Kilgrave would return. From the photos it seems to confirm he hasn’t been physically resurrected, but he’s still in her head – like an evil Jiminy Cricket. It also looks like he’s in Malcolm’s too judging from one of the reaction shots.

END SPOILERS

The new season of “Jessica Jones” is expected to premiere in early 2018.

“Jessica Jones” Trailer Does It ‘Her Way’

jessica-jones-trailer-does-it-her-way-696x464.jpg

Netflix has released a new trailer dubbed ‘Her Way’ to promote the upcoming second season of “Jessica Jones”.

Surprisingly much of the trailer is culled from footage from the first season, though there are a few new shots and clip starts out with an extended scene from the second which sees Jessica attending anger management class. Needless to say, it doesn’t go well.

The show’s first season was not only a Peabody Award winner but it remains the highest scoring Marvel-Netflix series to date on Metacritic with an 81/100, ahead of “Luke Cage” S1 (79), “Daredevil” S1 (75), “Daredevil S2” (68), “The Defenders” (63), “The Punisher” S1 (55) and “Iron Fist” S1 (37).

The new season of “Jessica Jones” consists of thirteen more episodes and will premiere in full on March 8th.

I just finished season 2, and wow, is this season good. Like the first season, this isn't a show for those looking for the typical comic book entertainment. While there is action, this show works more on a film noir level, all slow burn and exposition.
We find out that Jessica wasn't the only survivor of the crash that led to her getting powers, as we get introduced to her mother, who has also undergone treatment from the shady doctor who gave Jess her abilities. Mom is stronger, and has major anger issues, and is out to kill anyone who is out to get her little girl. And yes, the rumors were true, and we do get to see Kilgrave again, and as I suspected, it's all in Jessica's head. And while it's only for one episode, David Tennant is absolutely brilliant in the role, and it's nice to see him back in the purple suit.
Is Jessica maybe headed for happiness, finally? Yeah, you know how comic books work. But the end of the season leaves us with some threads that could lead to some interesting plots in the next season.

I will admit, there are some slow parts, but this season didn't feel like there were any filler episodes, like we've seen in much of the rest of the Marvel/Netflix shows. And it definitely didn't disappoint me. I'm going with 8 whisky bottles chucked at a gunman's head out of 10.

Netflix Renews “Jessica Jones” For S3

Netflix has renewed its Marvel drama series “Jessica Jones” for a third season.

The renewal comes around one month after season two dropped on the streaming service. Viewing figures aren’t available, but the series has remained the most critically favored of all of its Marvel dramas.

A return date has not yet been determined. Krysten Ritter, Rachael Taylor and Carrie-Anne star in the series which is slated to stay with the service despite Marvel’s owner Disney launching a rival streaming service of its own next year.

The next Marvel Netflix series to premiere will be the second season of “Luke Cage” in June.

“Jessica Jones” Showrunner Departs For WB

Melissa Rosenberg, showrunner on Marvel and Netflix’s “Jessica Jones,” has signed a multi-year, eight-figure deal with Warner Bros. Television where she’ll oversee the production of a number of new series.

Rosenberg will continue to be credited as executive producer on “Jessica Jones” with her remaining fully involved in the currently in the works third season which will air next year. After that, the show’s cast and production team will carry on without her under a new showrunner.

Rosenberg’s move comes as Warners is focused on buffing out its offerings with its new streaming service in mind. It also marks a rare reversal with a showrunner leaving Netflix as opposed to joining the streaming service like so many have done in recent months.

Totally agree.

I loved this season, after going in with low expectations thinking that there is no way that the Kilgrave storyline could be rivalled.

But it was, in it's own way.

The fate of “Luke Cage,” “Jessica Jones” and “The Defenders” is unclear at present but should ‘Cage’ get canned it could potentially open the door for a “Heroes for Hire” spin-off on Disney’s streaming service.

Netflix Cancels “The Punisher,” “Jessica Jones”

netflix-cancels-the-punisher-jessica-jones-696x464.jpg

It’s official. A month on from the launch of the second season of “The Punisher,” Netflix has officially axed both it and “Jessica Jones” – its last two remaining Marvel series.

There will be no third season of “The Punisher,” while the yet-to-air third season of “Jessica Jones” arrives at a TBA 2019 date. The cancellation brings to a close the multi-series and multi-year agreement forged between Netflix and Marvel which was announced five years ago.

An official Netflix spokesman has issued a statement to Deadline:

“Marvel’s The Punisher will not return for a third season on Netflix. Showrunner Steve Lightfoot, the terrific crew, and exceptional cast including star Jon Bernthal, delivered an acclaimed and compelling series for fans, and we are proud to showcase their work on Netflix for years to come.

In addition, in reviewing our Marvel programming, we have decided that the upcoming third season will also be the final season for Marvel’s Jessica Jones. We are grateful to showrunner Melissa Rosenberg, star Krysten Ritter and the entire cast and crew, for three incredible seasons of this groundbreaking series, which was recognized by the Peabody Awards among many others.

We are grateful to Marvel for five years of our fruitful partnership and thank the passionate fans who have followed these series from the beginning.”

The axings of “Iron Fist,” “Luke Cage” and “Daredevil” all came shortly after their most recent seasons went to air, so “The Punisher” cancellation was expected – that ‘Jones’ got it as well before the new season aired is a surprise.

All shows were produced by the Jeph Loeb-run Marvel TV which closed a similar four-series and one special arrangement, albeit in animated form, with the soon-to-be Disney majority owned Hulu the other week. Marvel Studios meanwhile is spearheading multiple shows for the Disney+ streaming service.

Whether any of these shows will be resurrected remains in question, though doubtful. Exclusivity contracts mean Netflix will own the rights to these takes for at least a few years to come and if the characters are to come back, reboots are more likely than revivals.

Loeb has also penned an open letter on Marvel.com thanking fans for their love of the shows and teasing the future with the line: “Our network partner may have decided they no longer want to continue telling the tales of these great characters… but you know Marvel better than that.”

Marvel releases official statement on Netflix show cancellations

Now that all of the Marvel Netflix shows have been canceled, the studio has released an official response.

Appearing on Marvel.com, the statement from Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb says the following:

“It had never been done before.

“Four separate television series, each with different super-talented showrunners, writers, directors, cast and crew, coming out months apart and then…

“…they would meet in a single event series all set in the heart of New York City.

“We called them The Defenders.

“And together we were thrilled by stories of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and even the Punisher joined in!

“They said it couldn’t be done.

“But Marvel assembled amazing teams to write, produce, direct, edit, and score 13 seasons and 161 one-hour episodes.

“Take a moment and go online and look at the dazzling list of actors, writers, directors, and musicians who graced us with the very best of their craft.

“We loved each and every minute of it.

“And we did it all for you — the fans — who cheered for us around the world and made all the hard work worth it.

“So, Thank You!

“On behalf of everyone at Marvel Television, we couldn’t be more proud or more grateful to our audience.

“Our Network partner may have decided they no longer want to continue telling the tales of these great characters… but you know Marvel better than that.

“As Matthew Murdock’s Dad once said, ‘The measure of a man is not how he gets knocked to the mat, it’s how he gets back up.’

“To be continued…!”

The “to be continued” does suggest some hope for the characters involved but this is, of course, nothing definitive. We will have to wait and see when, where, and if we will see these characters again.
