Development

Saw 3D was intended to be the final film in the Saw franchise, with the film being split into two parts.

However, Lionsgate Films only allowed the filmmakers to make one more film after Saw VI under-performed at the box office.

According to Saw 3D writers Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton, because of the change, "the big reveal of Dr. Gordon was a bit underserved ...

Perhaps creating more questions than answers.

There were several ideas we never quite figured out. But I don’t want to say what they were, because you never know what might happen in the future."

In February 2016, it was reported that Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger wrote the script.

It became known in July 2016 that Michael and Peter Spierig directed the film.

Mark Burg and Oren Koules, who produced all of the previous entries in the Saw series, will also reprise their roles as producers.

Composer Charlie Clouser described the film as a "reinvention" of the franchise, opining that "the Spierig brothers can deliver a fresh take on the material that will establish a new story line and new characters that can carry the saga into the future."

Filming

In October 2016, production was confirmed to have commenced under the working title of Saw: Legacy.

The film was shot in November 2016, before entering post-production by that January

On March 2, 2017, Bloody Disgusting broke the first plot details and a full actor list, confirming that Tobin Bell will be returning in the role of Jigsaw to some degree.

In June 2017, the Motion Picture Association of America listed the film under the official title of Jigsaw, with the film rated R, for "sequences of grisly bloody violence and torture, and for language".

Music

Charlie Clouser, who provided the score for all previous entries in the Saw series, will return to score Jigsaw.

Clouser will reimagine the music of the Saw franchise, following the six year hiatus between Saw 3D and Jigsaw.

According to Clouser, "this will be an opportunity for me to re-imagine how I approach the score, and I’ll be trying a more stark, bold, and stripped-down approach that will be more in line with the strong vision that the Spierig brothers are bringing to the table."

I didn't watch past the third installment, and didn't care much for anything past the first one. The concept is cool, but get's overplayed, since it's just another horror trope of "how far can we push this". The first film is very much like a Hitchcock film, a real mystery with a brilliant MacGuffin. The others I just can't get overly excited about.

The New “Saw” To Be Less Vicious, More Fun

Lionsgate has released a new photo from “Jigsaw,” the upcoming eighth film in the “Saw” horror franchise, while directors Michael and Peter Spierig have offered some new quotes about the film to EW.

The premise of the film has bodies turning up that are linked to either the long dead Jigsaw or a Jigsaw copycat. Peter Spierig says: “The DNA of Tobin Bell is all over this film” while Michael Spierig adds that the tone is more fun than previous films in the series:

“We’ve got some pretty wild traps in the film — we don’t shy away from the gore. It’s such a perfect Halloween scare fest. It’s perhaps not quite as vicious and more fun, which is something we tried to inject into it. But it’s still full of good fun gore, that’s for sure. And, on top of that, it’s got a really great mystery, and there are very interesting twists. It’s ‘Saw’ for 2017.”

Bell, Laura Vandervoort and Hannah Anderson are the only confirmed cast members at this point, the film has been kept mostly under wraps since it was shot last Fall.

The new “Saw” is slated to hit cinemas on October 27th.

First Trailer: “Jigsaw”

Ahead of its Comic Con presentation this weekend, Lionsgate has brought online the first trailer for “Jigsaw,” the upcoming eighth film in the “Saw” horror film franchise.

Coming seven years after the previous entry, the new film looks like an attempt at moving away from the torture porn saga of the sequels and towards the more high concept tone of the original that started it all. The film’s directors have labelled it less vicious, more fun and with a bigger sense of mystery than previous films.

Directed by The Spierig Brothers, the film stars Mandela Van Peebles, Laura Vandervoort, Brittany Allen, Callum Keith Rennie, Matt Passmore, Hannah Emily Anderson, Josiah Black, Shaquan Lewis, Michael Bolsvert, James Gomez, and Tobin Bell.

“Jigsaw” opens in cinemas on October 27th.
