Vaughn Explains Moore’s “Kingsman” Villain

Oscar winner Julianne Moore steps into the role of the villain in the upcoming “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” and once again, like Samuel L. Jackson in “Kingsman: The Secret Service,” it’s a successful but insane American big business CEO.

Speaking about the new take with both EW and Empire, the film’s director Matthew Vaughn describes Moore’s Poppy character as “Martha Stewart on crack… a kooky, sweet, Stepford Wives-style villain that, at the same time, is lethal and crazy and intelligent”.

Her aim is to bring back “her beloved Americana” and to that end, this ruthless entrepreneur operates from a re-created kitschy 1950s Main Street in the deep jungle. Her trade: “She’s taken over the global drug business and wants to be on the Forbes list” and seeks to legalise drugs worldwide:

“The best villains have plotlines which would actually seem like half-decent ideas if they weren’t so crazy. They have a plan to completely f— up the world but their motives are not totally ridiculous.

She has a speech where she goes, ‘sugar is 10 times more addictive than cocaine. It causes more death and misery in America. Yet one is legal. Peddle that s— and you’re in the Forbes 500. Peddle coke and you’re in jail. What the f—!’ So the points she’s making are not insane…her solutions definitely are.”

The title of the film alludes to the Golden Triangle, but Vaughn revealed that even after several test screenings – not a single audience member had ever heard of the infamous opium-poppy producing region in Asia: “When we tested the movie with an audience, everybody was like, ‘What’s the Golden Triangle?’ I was like, ‘For f–ks sake.’ No one had heard of it in three test screenings.”

Taron Egerton, Mark Strong, Colin Firth, Channing Tatum, Halle Berry, Jeff Bridges, Michael Gambon, Pedro Pascal and Elton John co-star in the new film which opens September 22nd.

“Kingsman” Marketing Pokes Fun At Eclipse

a-third-kingsman-already-planned-696x464.jpg

20th Century Fox is having a bit of fun today with a new promo video for “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” out which celebrates the ‘greatest movie promo ever’. That promo? The upcoming solar eclipse. In a statement, they say:

“20th Century Fox has orchestrated a solar eclipse to promote Kingsman: The Golden Circle. The studio has also released a behind-the-scenes look into the process behind the visionary stunt, which will be a part of the upcoming holiday, #GoldenCircleDay, this Monday August 21st.

The studio has also created a special set of ‘Harry Hart’ sunglasses to view the eclipse. Without the use of these special sunglasses, the total eclipse could be the last thing you ever see. Happy Golden Circle Day!”

Directed by Matthew Vaughn from a script by Jane Goldman and Vaughn, the new film begins with the destruction of the Kingsman headquarters as the world is held hostage. Eggsy and Merlin journey to the United States to discover an allied spy organization called Statesman, dating back to the day they were both founded.

In a new adventure that tests their agents’ strength and wits to the limit, these two elite secret organizations band together to defeat a ruthless common enemy.

“Kingsman: The Golden Circle” arrives in cinemas on September 22nd.

“Kingsman” TV Spot Explains The ‘Golden Circle’

Perhaps one of the more amusing stories regarding the making of “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” was that it was test screened three times, and every time not a single person had heard of the real ‘Golden Triangle’ which the title is a spin on.

Lack of general audience awareness of geography and history aside, anticipation is high for the sequel to “Kingsman: The Secret Service,” and a new TV spot for the film explains the title and offers a slightly better look at the entry requirements to join the army of Julianne Moore’s insane Martha Stewart-type Poppy.

Taron Egerton, Mark Strong, Halle Berry, Jeff Bridges, Channing Tatum and Pedro Pascal co-star in the film which opens September 22nd.

Disney now has its hands on Fox’s key franchises including “X-Men,” “Alien,” “Predator,” “Avatar,” “Die Hard,” “Planet of the Apes,” “Kingsman” and “Fantastic Four” (which is listed in the press release). Disney now also controls the full rights to all “Star Wars” films with the previously Fox-owned 1977 original likely to go back to Disney’s Lucasfilm – meaning theatrical re-releases and a potential home video version of the original theatrical cut.
