Your thought on - and memories of FOX and their movies.....
Disney Holding Talks To Buy 21st Century Fox?
In a move that could be one of the biggest shake-ups in Hollywood in many years, CNBC reports Disney was reportedly in talks to potentially buy 21st Century Fox.
The advantages are huge – the deal would bring the original “Star Wars” trilogy and the prequel films under their roof, same with the “X-Men” and Fox’s other Marvel properties, plus it would nab FOX’s other lucrative franchises like “Avatar” and “Alien”. On top of that they would have a prestige arm in Fox Searchlight, and potentially all of Fox’s back catalogue of films for their standalone streaming service launching in 2019 (assuming Fox’s existing deals don’t prevent it).
Talks have apparently been going on for weeks, and if they go through then Fox would essentially get out of the movie business to put their focus on its TV, news and sports divisions. Though talks are no longer active at the moment according to The Wall Street Journal, the report notes they could certainly resume as Fox is reportedly still very interested in selling its entertainment divisions in order to focus on its most profitable areas.
The ramifications of such a deal are immense, but The Federal Trade Commission may not be keen on it due to potential monopoly issues – such a deal for example means Disney can’t take Fox Television or Fox Sports because they already own ABC and ESPN and can’t own two broadcast networks.
Fox Disney Merger Talks Already Dead
Following the CNBC report this morning that sent everyone into a tizzy over the possibility, The Wall Street Journal has thrown a bucket of ice water on the speculation over Disney potentially buying Fox’s film division.
The outlet has further information on the deal, stating it fell apart after the two sides couldn’t agree on deal points and how much money should change hands. While the initial report did indicate talks had ceased, there was the impression they could resume. WSJ’s report however suggests chances of that now are next to none.
Both companies saw their stocks get a boost with the news that such a deal was under consideration – Fox jumping by 5% and Disney by 1%. By all indications Fox is still intent on offloading their film assets in the near future, and with this deal falling through it’s likely other major players will step up to potentially take on the job.
Comcast Now Pursuing Fox’s Assets
NBC owner Comcast is reported looking to acquire some of 21st Century Fox’s assets reports CNBC, taking the place of Disney Pictures which was reportedly in talks for the same assets earlier this month.
Like that previous negotiation, the Comcast deal would be for 21st Century Fox and the Fox Television Production companies, and would NOT include Fox News, Fox Sports or the FOX channel. Talks are ongoing.
Like Disney, Comcast is under rules and can only own one broadcast network so FOX and FOX News are off the table to steer clear of antitrust laws. The site also reports that though Disney and Fox are not currently in talks, the deal is not dead on their end. Also Verizon Communications is said to be interested in acquiring parts of Fox.
Comcast Says No Longer Reviewing Deal for 21st Century Fox Assets
Comcast says in statement it never got level of engagement from Fox to make definitive offer
Comcast Corp. said it is no longer pursuing an acquisition of several key media and entertainment assets from 21st Century Fox, leaving Rupert Murdoch’s media empire in position to finalize a deal with Walt Disney Co.
I am not business minded, but if it leads to the cancellation of the latest proposed FANTASTIC FOUR movie, then YAYYYY!!!
But are we ready for Disney's ALIEN 5?
A new report over at CNBC suggests that communications giant Comcast could top Disney’s $52.4 billion offer for 20th Century Fox.
The report says that negotiations are technically still open and no decision has been made by Comcast on a topping bid yet, but Disney is reportedly already preparing itself for a Comcast topping bid and considering responses in case.
Comcast executives suggested to Murdoch last year they would be willing to pay significantly more for Fox’s assets than what Disney was offering and such an offer could persuade enough FOX shareholders to vote against Murdoch who chose Disney over Comcast due to regulatory concerns.
More importantly, if the acquisition by Disney results in a good FF movie then even more YAYYY!!!!
Given the direction that franchise has gone in recent years, I'm happy to answer that with a big YES! It's not like they could make anything worse than AvP.
Disney is getting too big though. That worries me, for some reason.
True but so far they seem to be managing. It seems that they're allowing divisions to work as discrete units rather than trying to oversee everything from a top level. MCU, Lucasfilm, Pixar, all seem to be basically operating as independent entities with a united vision. If they keep that approach, things can continue to work successfully.
