Jared Leto To Lead Spidey Spin-Off “Morbius”

Oscar-winning actor Jared Leto has signed on to play Marvel Comics antihero Morbius the Living Vampire in the upcoming “Spider-Man” spin-off project “Morbius” at Sony Pictures.

Additionally, Scandinavian filmmaker Daniel Espinosa (“Life”) will helm the project which Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach will produce with Lucas Foster. “Power Rangers” and “Dracula Untold” film scribes Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama, who most recently served as showrunners on Netflix’s “Lost in Space,” wrote the script for the film.

Created by Roy Thomas and Gil Kane, Morbius is in the comics is Dr. Michael Morbius, a scientist who suffered from a rare blood disease and attempted to cure himself and instead became inflicted with a form of vampirism. Over time he has become a slightly heroic figure in his own right.

The character first appeared in ‘Amazing Spider-Man #101,’ the first issue not written by co-creator Stan Lee. This will join this year’s “Venom” and the delayed “Silver & Black” movie in the works at Sony.

Sony Pictures has begun development on “Morbius,” a feature based on the “Spider-Man” antihero Morbius the Living Vampire. “Power Rangers” and “Dracula Untold” film scribes Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama wrote the script which was just submitted to the studio after a secret development process.

Details of Sony’s take on the character are not known but follows in the wake of the currently shooting “Venom” and the soon to film “Silver & Black” which aren’t connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Sharpless and Sazama also serve as showrunners on Netflix’s “Lost in Space” reboot which debuts next year.

Not the Morbius I was thinking of.

Producers are now moving forward on their “Spider-Man” spin-off universe plans, confirming that the Jared Leto-led “Morbius the Living Vampire” film is next up for them and seemingly taking precedence over the “Silver and Black” film that previously seemed to be the next cab off the rank.

New Details About “Morbius” Filming

With “Venom” now out and conquering the box-office, Sony Pictures’ attempts at their own Marvel Cinematic Universe has gained a foothold. The next salvo will be “Morbius,” the film adaptation of the iconic vampire character from Marvel Comics with Jared Leto set to star.

Producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, who are spearheading the Sony Marvel world, spoke with Collider and offered an update on the project’s status saying filming aims to begin in February with Daniel Espinosa (“Safe House”) helming from a script by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama. Asked if Leto is definitely onboard they say:

“Oh yeah. This is the great thing for us now, that an actor like him, and an actor like Tom wanted to have their own character. But the character they love. Both of them, very hard to get them to do a movie. You actually cannot get them. We went in, we sat with them, and everybody told us, ‘Oh, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba.’ Nothing. That’s what he wanted to do.”

Asked if the plan is to pursue a PG-13 rating like they did with “Venom” and not an R, Arad says:

“It depends on the story. If the success of the story depends on being R-rated… then, of course, we can do it. But at least for me, I have grandkids, kids, whatever, all these things, and some of these movies, they’re dying to see. You know? As I took my grandson, seven, to the recording session of Venom. And he had the time of his life.

When you hear Venom…forget Venom. When you hear, Carnage, the only thing you can think of is R. But, if you know his story, if you really know the comic, there’s no R here. He’s a tortured soul. It’s not about what he does, because we never have to show the knife going from here to there, and the blood is pouring. What you have to show is, what is the motivation? Was he born like that, or it’s someone we should feel for, because if you are succeeding to make a villain someone you can feel for, jackpot.”

In spite of terrible reviews, “Venom” is continuing to do strong post-weekend business with a record Monday haul of $9.6 million on Columbus Day – the best showing for an October Monday ever.

Sony Pictures has officially announced today that they will release two untitled Sony/Marvel projects in 2020 – specifically one on July 10th and another on October 2nd.

With “Spider-Man: Far from Home” set for July 2019 (and so no Spidey in 2020) and the solo Silver Sable and Black Cat films stalled in development, there’s only two real possibilities – the currently in pre-production Jared Leto-led “Morbius: The Living Vampire” for the July date, and a sequel to this year’s smash hit “Venom”.

Arjona Is The Female Lead In Marvel’s “Morbius”

Adria Arjona (“Emerald City,” “Pacific Rim Uprising”) is in talks to play Martine, the female lead opposite Jared Leto in the Marvel Comics feature adaptation of “Morbius the Living Vampire” at Sony Pictures.

Daniel Espinosa is directing the spin-off film which follows renowned biochemist Dr. Michael Morbius who attempts to cure a fatal blood disease by injecting himself with a treatment serum derived from bats.

This transforms him into the anti-hero Morbius who has all the qualities of a vampire, including a taste for human blood. In the comics, Martine is engaged to Morbius and becomes a potential victim to his bloodlust as he grapples with the transformation.

Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama co-wrote the script while Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach will produce with Lucas Foster.

Arjona recently signed on for Olivier Assayas’ spy drama “Wasp Network” alongside Penelope Cruz, Pedro Pascal and Edgar Ramirez. That deals with a Florida-based, U.S. government-approved terrorist network of Cuban spies in the 1990s.

I could see Jared Harris taking on the role of a misguided and perhaps slightly sympathetic anti-hero, but not Jared Leto.

I can't say I've seen him in anything that couldn't have been done as well or better by another actor.

Meanwhile, Jared Harris has impressed me more than once, especially in MAD MEN.
