Live-Action “Mulan” Aims For January Start

Disney is reportedly aiming to begin production on its live-action remake of its 1998 animated feature “Mulan” in late January.

Omega Underground revealed the news, saying that shooting will take place in China, New Zealand, and Australia.

Niki Caro is slated to helm the project which she has described as “a muscular piece of girly martial arts extravaganza in China”. It will also rely heavily on music.

The new “Mulan” is expected to soon announce a release date which will be some time in 2019.

Donnie Yen is set to star alongside Liu Yifei in the Niki Caro-directed live-action adaptation of the 1998 animated classic “Mulan” at Disney Pictures.

Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver penned the script for the new film about a young woman who posed as a man to go to war in her father’s place. It follows the original which starred the voices of Ming-Na Wen, Eddie Murphy, Miguel Ferrer, and BD Wong. It grossed $304.3 million worldwide.

Yen will play Commander Tung, who serves as a mentor to Mulan. The character wasn’t in the 1998 film and confirms the film won’t be a completely faithful remake ala last year’s “Beauty and the Beast”.

Chris Bender, Jason Reed, and Jake Weiner are producing. The film is currently slated for a March 27th 2020 release.

I wasn’t planning to go see this, but a friend told me today that this movie might be closer to the original tale, which was much darker. However she’s also a fan of the remakes in general. I started to tell her how much I thought “Cinderella” sucked, but then she started up with how much she loved it ... :emoji_unamused:
