Fifty years on from the release of George A. Romero’s iconic 1968 zombie film “Night of the Living Dead,” some of the key talent involved in it will return for a direct follow-up according to Bloody Disgusting.

Living Dead Media, the company which handles the rights to the original, have announced that they intend to release an official sequel billed as “Night of the Living Dead Part II” which is expected to arrive in 2019. In an official statement the company says:

“Night of the Living Dead’s place on the Mt. Rushmore of horror films is known by most horror fans and people all over the world. But, unknown to most is that in the 1970’s, the original writers and producers of Night of the Living Dead penned a sequel to their masterpiece. A sequel that inexplicably has gone unproduced for over forty years – until now. Living Dead Media has brushed away the dirt from this amazing follow up to a classic and brought together a great team to produce the new film.”

Essentially it sounds like the film will be using 2018’s “Halloween” as a template with the new film working as a direct sequel to the original and ignoring the numerous sequels that came after. One key franchise difference is Romero himself was heavily involved in its sequels, with the second film “Dawn of the Dead” often considered as good (if not better) than the John A. Russo-penned ‘Night’.

George A. Romero’s wife, Suzanne Desrocher-Romero, had previously revealed that her late husband left behind forty or more scripts that hadn’t been produced, though it’s not clear if this project is one of those scripts she was talking about.

I’ve never seen any of the other “Dead” movies. Is “Dawn of the Dead” good? Because I so love “Night of the Living Dead.”
