Pizzolatto Skips “Perry Mason” For “True Detective”

“True Detective” creator Nic Pizzolatto has officially stepped away from HBO’s planned “Perry Mason” reboot to focus all his attention on the third season of ‘Detective’ reports Deadline.

Mahershala Ali leads the cast of the new season of which there is little information at this time. Pizzolatto penned both the highly acclaimed first season and widely derided second season of “True Detective,” along with recent films such as “Galveston” and “The Magnificent Seven”.

“Friday Night Lights” and “Weeds” duo Rolin Jones and Ron Fitzgerald will take over ‘Mason’ which stars Robert Downey Jr. as the famed attorney iconically portrayed by Raymond Burr. At this point there’s no word on when either project will hit the screen

Perry Mason is an American legal drama series originally broadcast on CBS television from September 21, 1957, to May 22, 1966.

The title character, portrayed by Raymond Burr, is a fictional Los Angeles criminal defense lawyer who originally appeared in detective fiction by Erle Stanley Gardner.

Many episodes are based on stories written by Gardner.

The New Perry Mason, a 1973 revival of the series with a different cast, was poorly received and ran for 15 episodes.

In 1985, the first in a successful series of 30 Perry Mason television films aired on NBC, with Burr reprising the role of Mason in 26 of them prior to his death in 1993.

HBO revival

In August 2016, HBO announced a potential new series written by Nic Pizzolatto and starring Robert Downey Jr.

Matthew Rhys Is The New “Perry Mason”

Former “The Americans” star Matthew Rhys has been set to lead the long in the works limited series reboot of “Perry Mason” at HBO.

Robert Downey Jr. has long been attached, back when the project was conceived as a feature film from “True Detective” creator Nic Pizzolatto, but his schedule has made it near impossible. Downey will remain on board as an executive producer. Rolin Jones and Ron Fitzgerald took over the writing as it shifted gears to a series and will serve as showrunners.

Erle Stanley Gardner created the character with this new one set in 1932 Los Angeles and exploring the time in the legendary criminal defense lawyer’s life when he is living check-to-check as a low-rent private investigator. Mason is haunted by his wartime experiences in France and is suffering the effects of a broken marriage.

Rhys will also produce the series and a search is now underway for a director.

HBO has picked up the “Perry Mason” reboot to series with Team Downey producing the limited series run. In addition, “Game of Thrones” pilot director Tim Van Patten has signed on to direct.

Set in 1932 Los Angeles and based on characters created by Erle Stanley Gardner, the story follows the origins of American fiction’s most legendary criminal defense lawyer Perry Mason (Matthew Rhys).

At this point in time, he is a low-rent private investigator haunted by his wartime experiences in France and caught in a broken marriage. When a child kidnapping case breaks down his door, Mason’s relentless pursuit of the truth reveals a fractured city and just maybe, a pathway to redemption for himself.

Robert Downey Jr., Amanda Burrell, Joe Horacek and Susan Downey executive produce. Rolin Jones and Ron Fitzgerald will pen, executive produce and serve as co-showrunners.

Is that part of the original novel or is this a new and improved development? And if it's the latter, why not just make up a new character? Do they have to keep doing the same things over and over?

Maslany Joins HBO’s “Perry Mason” Reboot

“Orphan Black” star Tatiana Maslany will join Matthew Rhys in the “Perry Mason” limited series at HBO which Robert Downey Jr. is executive producing.

The series is set in 1932 Los Angeles and will tell an origin story for Mason (Rhys), who when the story begins is not a lawyer but a down-on-his-luck private investigator. When the case of the decade breaks down his door, his relentless pursuit of the truth reveals a fractured city and, possibly, a path to redemption for himself.

Maslany will play the key role of Sister Alice, the leader of the Radiant Assembly of God. She preaches three sermons a day to a hungry congregation and a radio audience that spans the country. She wields great power when she speaks and plans to use it in ways only she can know.

Rolin Jones and Ron Fitzgerald serve as writers and showrunners.
