Sam Mendes In Talks For Disney’s “Pinocchio”
Sam Mendes is in early talks to direct the live-action adaptation of 1940 animated classic “Pinocchio” currently in the works at Disney Pictures.
Last year Mendes became attached to direct another animated to live-action remake for Disney, “James and the Giant Peach,” but now he’s reportedly off that project.
Peter Hedges penned the script for the new “Pinocchio,” the latest take on Carlo Collodi’s 1883 children’s book about a puppet and a poor woodcarver.

The project is not to be confused with the other notable adaptation of the property currently in development – the Warner Bros. Pictures live-action film which has Paul Thomas Anderson writing the screenplay and Robert Downey Jr. slated to star as Geppetto.

Mendes Drops Out Of Disney’s “Pinocchio”
Disney’s proposed live-action take on “Pinocchio” has hit a speed bump this week as Oscar winner Sam Mendes has reportedly dropped out of potentially directing the project according to The Tracking Board.
Mendes was reported to be in early talks for the director’s seat earlier this year and the new report says things hadn’t progressed past that point. The film is still in development with a screenplay by “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” writer Chris Weitz who is also producing.
Several have tried to adapt “Pinocchio” in recent times without success. Warners is still developing one with Robert Downey Jr., no new news regarding that project has come to light in recent times. Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro was also trying to do a version of the story and has spoken about the difficulty in getting funding for his take during press rounds for “The Shape of Water”.

“Paddington” Director Reboots “Pinocchio”
“Paddington” director Paul King has been selected to direct the live-action reimagining of Disney’s 1940 animated classic “Pinocchio” with the aim to get the movie into production by the Fall.
Adapted from the Italian story by Carlo Collodi about a wooden boy puppet crafted by an old carver named Geppetto. The puppet is brought to life by a fairy who says he will become a real boy if he shows bravery, and the character Jiminy Cricket becomes his de facto conscience and tries to steer him in the right direction.
King replaces Sam Mendes who was initially slated to direct but left last year. Jack Thorne (“Wonder”) is rewriting a script from Peter Hedges and Chris Weitz. The latter is producing alongside Andrew Miano.
The project isn’t to be confused with several other “Pinocchio” films long in development including an Italian fascism-themed take by Guillermo del Toro, and “Gepetto” starring Robert Downey Jr. with both of those projects currently stalled.

Geppetto is his creator, a master toymaker as well as a widower who longs for a son. Geppetto is protective of Pinocchio, prompting the boy to set out and see the world for himself.

Paul King, the helmer of the beloved “Paddington” films, signed on to direct Disney’s live-action adaptation of “Pinocchio” last year. Now it has been revealed that he has left the project entirely.
Sam Mendes was originally on board to direct, but he left a few months later. King came on in early 2018 and his attachment to both this and a young “Willy Wonka” movie at Warners meant he likely wouldn’t return for a third “Paddington”.
That’s changed now as cinematographer Seamus McGarvey, speaking with Discussing Film, revealed King’s departure: “The director basically pulled out of the film, for um, family reasons. Disney are trying to find a new director, but yeah, I read those reports that Tom Hanks and all those other people, but yeah, they’re trying to get it going.”

Del Toro On Status Of Animated “Pinocchio”
Guillermo del Toro’s Cold War-era romantic fantasy tale “The Shape of Water” may be getting rave reviews on the festival circuit this week, but that doesn’t mean the filmmaker still doesn’t hit hurdles from time to time in terms of getting projects made.
One such project he’s been developing for some time before it fell apart was a stop-motion animated “Pinocchio” feature which was going to co-direct along with author Gus Grimly and “Fantastic Mr. Fox” animation director Mark Gustafson.
Everything looked good – Daniel Radcliffe, Tom Waits, and Christopher Walken were being eyed for roles, and Nick Cave was to score the picture. However, it never took off, leading to speculation it was dead. Del Toro tells Indiewire that’s not the case, the film is waiting to go – they just need the money:
“I’ve been looking for financing for almost ten years. We have the puppets, we have the design. I always or almost always complicate my life. None of the movies I want to do are easy. And they don’t belong to anything anyone wanted to do at that time.
No one wanted to do superheroes when I did ‘Hellboy,’ no one wanted to do monsters when I did ‘Pacific Rim.’ When I announced ‘Pinocchio’ I got many calls: ‘Yeah but it’s set during the rise of Mussolini, it’s an anti-fascist Pinocchio.’ [mimes they all hung up] If you have $35 million and if you want to make a Mexican happy, here I am.”
del Toro has previously explained some interesting elements of the story such as the sperm whale that swallows Pinocchio is a giant dogfish here. There are borderline hallucinations involving black rabbits, and the Blue Fairy is really a dead girl’s spirit.
