Rampage is an upcoming American action adventure monster film directed by Brad Peyton and written by Ryan Engle.

It is based on the 1980s arcade video game of the same name.

The film stars Dwayne Johnson, Naomie Harris, Malin Åkerman, Joe Manganiello, Jake Lacy, Marley Shelton, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

New Line Cinema will release the film on April 20, 2018 in 3D and IMAX.

Cast
Production

Warner Bros. acquired the film adaptation rights to the 1980s video game Rampage in 2009, as part of their acquisition of Midway Games for $33 million.

On November 18, 2011, it was announced that a live-action film adaptation based on the 1980s video game Rampage is in development by New Line Cinema with John Rickard set to produce.

On March 30, 2012, THR confirmed that New Line had set Ryan Engle to adapt the video game and write the screenplay for the film.

On June 23, 2015, Deadline reported that Dwayne Johnson was set to star and re-team with New Line and producer Beau Flynn, while studio was looking for a director to start production in the mid-2016.

Flynn would produce through FlynnPictureCo. along with already attached Rickard through Rickard Pictures, while Johnson and Dany Garcia of Seven Bucks Productions were also attached in producing capacity.

On July 22, 2015, it was reported that New Line was in talks with director Brad Peyton to direct and produce the film, which would center on three giant monsters, a gorilla, a lizard and a wolf, who wreak havoc on major cities in North America, with Johnson playing the role of a person to stop them.

In November 2016, two petitions were made to allow the bands Amon Amarth and Judas Priest to guest star in the film.

Also in November 2016, Peyton spoke about the film that it would "be a lot more emotional, a lot scarier and a lot more real than you'd expect."

Filming

Principal photography on the film began on April 17, 2017.

Filming was once expected to begin right after Johnson completed The Fate of the Furious.

Release

Rampage is scheduled to be released on April 20, 2018 in 3D and IMAX by New Line Cinema.

“Rampage” Moved Up To Avoid “Avengers”

In the wake of “Avengers: Infinity Way” being moved up a week in the United States, the Dwayne Johnson-led action thriller video game adaptation “Rampage” is following suit – shifting from April 20th to April 13th.

The move gives Johnson’s film a full two weeks before the Marvel juggernaut hits screens on April 27th and follows in the wake of the “Jumanji” sequel with Johnson that has overperformed and racked up $930 million in worldwide grosses.

Johnson, who today graciously accepted his Razzie award for “Baywatch” in a video clip, stars in “Rampage” as a primatologist who must stop the result of a rogue genetic experiment which mutates three creatures into giant beasts destroying everything in their path.

Uwe Boll Considers “Rampage” Legal Action

German film director Uwe Boll has reportedly threatened legal action against Warner Bros. Pictures over their upcoming film adaptation of the classic video game “Rampage”. Boll released a trilogy of films also titled “Rampage” between 2009 and last year and a statement on his personal website reads:

“Uwe Boll is currently reviewing his options to pursue litigation against motion picture studio Warner Bros. and Producer New Line for using his brand RAMPAGE as the title for the upcoming motion picture starring Dwayne Johnson, also known as the Rock. Boll released 3 original Rampage movies in 2009, 2014 and 2017. This movie trilogy had a quick turnaround amassing large cult following on DVD and entities like Netflix.”

Boll also says: “The new RAMPAGE movie will shrink my brand and my revenues I can make in the future with my RAMPAGE movies. It also confuses the audience! I want that WARNERS change the title, especially because the new movie has nothing to do with a RAMPAGE and looks more like Jumanji 2.”

Of course Boll, who started his career making classic video game adaptations like “House of the Dead” and “Alone in the Dark,” doesn’t make mention of the classic arcade game the new film is based on which had the same title decades ago. Nor is there any indication that he has trademarked the word “Rampage” for use in regards to filmed entertainment.

“Rampage” when it hits theaters on April 13th.
