The actual reason Weller didn't do the third movie is that he was committed to doing Naked Lunch. He asked the studio to wait but Orion was desperate to make another movie to stop themselves going bankrupt so they had to choose another actor for Robocop. Weller apparently went into the studio and was very apologetic even though he couldn't have prevented this from happening.

So Ebert wants some RoboCop on RoboCop action. Damned pervert. Like me.

The real problem is that the first film was great, and a satire hidden in an action film. Then they let Frank Miller write the next two, and he had just gone from writing great comics to writing absolute shit.
