Carina MacKenzie (“The Originals”) is set to pen the script for a reboot of the iconic 1990s teen TV series “Roswell” for The CW.

The new series will return to the Melinda Metz book “Roswell High” for its source material and then chuck in an immigration twist with the main character the daughter of undocumented immigrants.

In the series she discovers her teenage crush, who is now a police officer, is an alien who has kept his unearthly abilities hidden his entire life.

She protects his secret as the two reconnect and begin to investigate his origins. A violent attack and a long-standing government cover-up point to a greater alien presence on Earth, and the politics of fear and hatred threaten to expose him and destroy their deepening romance.

MacKenzie, Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank will executive produce. Jason Behr, Katherine Heigl and Brendan Fehr co-starred in the original.

Roswell, the alien-human hybrid teen drama which aired all the way back at the turn of the millennium, is officially getting the reboot treatment.

First announced to be in the works last October, The CW has now given its approval by handing the show a pilot order. Woop, woop!

The Originals producer Carina MacKenzie has written the script. It's based on Melinda Metz's book series Roswell High, which also inspired the Jason Katims drama.

And for this new series, there's an immigration twist.

Here's the synopsis from The CW: "After reluctantly returning to her tourist-trap hometown of Roswell, New Mexico, the daughter of undocumented immigrants discovers a shocking truth about her teenage crush who is now a police officer: he's an alien who has kept his unearthly abilities hidden his entire life.

"She protects his secret as the two reconnect and begin to investigate his origins, but when a violent attack and long-standing government cover-up point to a greater alien presence on Earth, the politics of fear and hatred threaten to expose him and destroy their deepening romance."

That all sounds very 2018. Well, apart from the alien thing.

The original Roswell was developed for Fox and revolved around high school students in the town of Roswell, New Mexico. It starred Jason Behr, Katherine Heigl and Brendan Fehr as alien/human hybrids, and Shiri Appleby as the human who fell in love with Behr's Max.

Roswell ran for three seasons between 1999 and 2002, and MacKenzie will executive produce the rebooted drama.

The news comes just days after The CW also ordered a pilot for a reboot of Charmed, which hasn't exactly gone down well with the original cast.

“Grey’s Anatomy” actress Jeanine Mason has scored the lead role in the pilot for CW’s “Roswell” reboot.

Amblin TV, Bender Brown Productions and Warner Bros. TV are producing the new take written by “The Originals” scribe Carina Adly MacKenzie and directed by Julie Plec. Once again it is based on the “Roswell High” book series by Melinda Metz.

The new version offers an immigration theme to the story. In the new version a jaded biomedical researcher, and the daughter of undocumented immigrants, is haunted by a tragic incident.

She discovers a shocking truth about her teenage crush who is now a police officer: He’s an alien who has kept his unearthly abilities hidden his entire life. She protects his secret as the two reconnect and begin to investigate his origins.
