    Your thoughts on this show......

After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.

“Star Wars” Series Set 7 Years Post-“Jedi”

    star-wars-series-set-7-years-post-jedi-696x464.jpg

Filmmaker Jon Favreau is joining the “Star Wars” universe soon with his involvement in a new live-action “Star Wars” series for Disney’s upcoming streaming service. The announcement came a while back, but there were zero details regarding what the series would actually be about.

Now finally, Favreau himself has spoken with The Nerdist at the “Solo: A Star Wars Story” premiere the other night and revealed that the series would be set roughly seven years after the battle of Endor in “Return of the Jedi”.

That’s six years after the New Republic is officially founded and a time when it was at its height and the First Order, hiding in the Unknown Regions, is in its earliest days. Essentially it will be at a time when the galaxy is in the midst of a period of peace.

The series, which will focus on all new characters, is expected to use similar CG animation work that Favreau used in Disney’s “Jungle Book” reboot. It will exclusively hit Disney’s new streaming service sometime in 2019.

Photo: “The Mandalorian” Gets A Weapon

    photo-the-mandalorian-gets-a-weapon-696x464.jpg

Filmmaker Jon Favreau has used his Instagram account to post a new photo from the set of the upcoming live-action “Star Wars” series “The Mandalorian,” a shot of a key prop featured in the action.

Making Star Wars has looked into it and discovered the prop, a weapon known as an ‘Amban phase-pulse blaster’, is the same one used by Boba Fett in the much-maligned “Star Wars Holiday Special”.

Favreau executive produces “The Mandalorian” which is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travels of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.

Dave Filoni, Taika Waititi, Deborah Chow, Bryce Dallas Howard and Rick Famuyiwa helm the ten episode first season which will reportedly have a combined budget of $100 million. It is expected to launch on the Disney direct-to-consumer platform in late 2019.

Oscar-winning visual effects company Industrial Light & Magic announced today that they’ve launched ILM TV, a brand new division to serve the streaming and episodic television market.

The first shows that ILM TV are coming onboard to work on are the new season of SyFy’s Superman prequel series “Krypton” and the Disney streaming service’s upcoming live-action “Star Wars” series “The Mandalorian”. Previously ILM worked on “The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles” back in the early 1990s.

The division will operate out of a new 47,000 square foot facility in London and be overseen by visual effects supervisors Hayden Jones and Jonathan Privett alongside “Black Mirror” executive producers Louise Hussey and Stefan Drury.

VFX supervisor Hayden Jones says in a press release: “We are extremely excited to be re-igniting ILM’s involvement in this market and to showcase the team’s expertise, unrivalled technology and production management globally. The television and streaming segments have grown exponentially in recent years and we are seeing substantial demand for high calibre visual effects that can be delivered on schedule and within budget, all of which lie at the core of our teams expertise and proven track record.”

I like the premise of this show, and I think it could be a great addition to the Star Wars mythos. I'm just curious how they will mess it up.

    “Panther” Composer To Score “Mandalorian”

    panther-composer-to-score-mandalorian-696x464.jpg

Ludwig Goransson, who did the scores for Ryan Coogler’s “Creed” and “Black Panther” along with Sony’s “Venom,” has come onboard to do the score for the Disney+ live-action “Star Wars” series “The Mandalorian” at Lucasfilm.

Pedro Pascal will star as a lone Mandalorian gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy and will be joined by Gina Carano, Giancarlo Esposito, Emily Swallow, Carl Weathers, Omid Abtahi, Werner Herzog and Nick Nolte.

In a statement, Goransson says: “Words fail to express how surreal and humbling it feels to be invited into the Star Wars universe. I am deeply grateful to Jon Favreau and Disney for this opportunity and to John Williams for raising the bar so high with his iconic, intrepid scores — they will never be matched. In these next months I hope to honor the tradition of Star Wars’ musical landscape while propelling The Mandalorian into new and unchartered territory. And I will try to remember that there is no try.”

Jon Favreau penned and executive produces the series which boasts episodes helmed by Dave Filoni, Deborah Chow, Rick Famuyiwa, Bryce Dallas Howard and Taika Waititi. Filoni, Kathleen Kennedy, and Colin Wilson also executive produce.

Taika Waititi To Voice “Mandalorian” Droid

    taika-waititi-to-voice-mandalorian-droid-696x464.jpg

We know that beloved director Taika Waititi (“Thor: Ragnarok,” “What We Do In The Shadows”) has helmed an episode of the upcoming first live-action “Star Wars” TV series “The Mandalorian” which is to premiere on the Disney+ streaming service.

Surprisingly though, Waititi is also set to appear in a role. Showrunner Jon Favreau has shared a behind-the-scenes image on his Instagram featuring Waititi recording his voice for a part. At the same time, droid bounty hunter IG-88 is visible on the screen in front of him.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/BvSgnKQhiKA/?utm_source=ig_embed

Could he be providing the droid’s voice? It would appear so. IG-88 is a rogue assassin droid and one of the most lethal bounty hunters in the galaxy but hasn’t had a voice in any of the live-action stories so far.

“The Mandalorian” is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.

More details about the series are set to be revealed on Sunday April 14th as part of the Star Wars Celebration convention.

Herzog Teases His “The Mandalorian” Role

    herzog-teases-his-the-mandalorian-role-696x464.jpg

Every now and then legendary documentary filmmaker Werner Herzog will pop up in an unexpected but almost always delicious pure acting role from a guest stint on “Parks and Recreation” to serving as the villain in the first “Jack Reacher” movie.

Last year came word that he would be making an appearance in the “Star Wars” franchise, which promptly fuelled speculation as to what it might be – shortly afterwards, “The Mandalorian” TV series was revealed.

Speaking with Indiewire this week, he confirms that the show is the project he’s involved with and touches briefly upon why he wants to do the gig:

“Now this is not a secret anymore, a small part, real small part, in ‘The Mandalorian,’ the ‘Star Wars’ sequel or whatever you call it. I like to do it because I know I’m good on screen, but only if I have to play a real villain.”

There’s zero clue as to what villain Herzog might portray in the show which is set between the original and current trilogies. Further details may come next month when Star Wars Celebration takes place. “The Mandalorian” is expected to launch with Disney+ in late 2019.

Herzog’s new doco “Meeting Gorbachev,” which features an extensive interview with former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, opens on May 3rd.

“The Mandalorian” Renewed For Season 2?

    the-mandalorian-renewed-for-season-2-696x464.jpg

The first season of the first ever “Star Wars” live-action series won’t air until this Fall, but a new report indicates Disney and Lucasfilm have big plans ahead for the show.HN Entertainment reports that a second season of “The Mandalorian” is “already being planned and ordered by Disney streaming”.

The show’s first season wrapped shooting in February and it’s expected the first footage will be screened at Star Wars Celebration in Chicago this month, along with the potential announcement of a release date.

This news suggests Disney wants to have a renewal order in place and the show already working on a follow-up season before the first one has aired. That’s not an unusual thing in the current big-budget streaming age – Amazon’s “Jack Ryan” did just that with plans for the second season well underway before the first was screened.

Said to take place after the fall of the Empire, writer-producer Jon Favreau is spearheading the new series which follows the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.

New Details On “The Mandalorian” Series

    new-details-on-series-for-mandalorian-696x464.jpg

The Star Wars Celebration convention on Friday was all about “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” film. On Saturday it was all about the ‘Galaxy’s Edge’ theme park and “Jedi: Fallen Order” game. This morning however, it was focused on the first live-action “Star Wars” series ever – “The Mandalorian”.

Producers Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni were joined on stage by actors Pedro Pascal, Gina Carano and the one and only Carl Weathers to promote the show which is set to be a launch title for the new Disney+ streaming service on November 12th.

Several new details about the series have been revealed, confirming the show is set five years after the fall of the Empire with Favreau saying he wanted to explore an age which will be partly inspired by the end of the Samurai in Japan and the post-civil war west in America.

As a result, some vestiges of the Empire will be incorporated into the narrative including one scene involving Stormtroopers which they didn’t have enough extras for and ended up enlisting the help of the fan-based organization the 501st Legion who came with their own uniforms and seemingly didn’t need much direction.

Pascal’s titular character is a lone gunfighter of questionable moral character in the outer reaches of the galaxy and far from the authority of the New Republic, while his ship is the Razorcrest – a reflective army surplus gunship. Carano plays Kara Dune, an ex-Rebel shock trooper and a bit of a loner who has trouble reintegrating into society. Weathers plays Grief Carga who runs the Bounty Hunter’s guild and hires The Mandalorian for a job.

Sadly there was no trailer in the livestream, and a near four-minute behind-the-scenes featurette was screened only for the crowd in the room (bootlegs are already popping up on YouTube). A few clips of live-action elements were shown, but most of that reel was soundbites and some sketches of things like Pascal’s character mounting a Dewback in at least one sequence.

The full panel has been made available on the official channel and can be seen below along with the first official photos:
