Sony Wins Quentin Tarantino’s Next Film

Sony Pictures has reportedly won the right to finance and the domestic and international distribution rights to Quentin Tarantino’s ninth film currently going by the title “#9”.

The ensemble drama is set in Los Angeles in the late 1960s and early 1970s, with Tarantino hoping hard that Margot Robbie will play the role of Sharon Tate. Every studio in town, bar Disney, chased the project and the deal came after a long night of bargaining between Sony and Tarantino’s reps.

Tarantino has reportedly had conversations with Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio for the two main lead male roles in the film which is said to have a tone akin to “Pulp Fiction” and a budget comparable to “Django Unchained”. David Heyman and Shannon McIntosh will produce and production aims to begin early-mid next year for a 2019 release.

Charles Manson, the notorious cult leader who directed his followers to commit a string of brutal murders, and who became a symbol of the dark side of 1960s counterculture, has died aged 83.

Manson was admitted to Bakersfield hospital, California earlier this month and died of natural causes on Sunday.

In 1969, his followers, known as the Manson Family, killed nine people.

Among the victims of the killing spree was heavily pregnant Hollywood actress Sharon Tate, wife of Roman Polanski.

One of Manson's young followers, Susan Atkins, stabbed Tate to death and scrawled "PIG" on the home's front door with the actress's blood.

Four other people at Tate's home were brutally stabbed to death. The next day, a wealthy couple in Los Angeles, Leno and Rosemary LaBianca, were also killed by the clan. The killings became known collectively as the Tate-LaBianca murders.

New Plot Details For Tarantino’s Next Film

Following the announcement of Sony Pictures landing the film last week and further details about the financial and contractual side of the agreement on the weekend, new plot details for Quentin Tarantino’s ninth film have now emerged.

Vanity Fair has revealed the first plot details for the 1969-set movie from a source that reportedly has read the script. They explain a little what the story is about:

“Set in Los Angeles in the summer of 1969, Tarantino’s upcoming movie focuses on a male TV actor who’s had one hit series and his looking for a way to get into the film business. His sidekick – who’s also his stunt double – is looking for the same thing. The horrific murder of Sharon Tate and four of her friends by Charles Manson’s cult of followers serves as a backdrop to the main story.”

This is all taking place as the real Charles Manson died in prison yesterday at the age of 83. Margot Robbie is currently the frontrunner to portray the slain Sharon Tate. Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio are all being considered for the two leads.

Tarantino Wants Pacino For His New Film

tarantino-wants-pacino-for-his-new-film-696x464.jpg

Quentin Tarantino is reportedly seeking Al Pacino for a role in his upcoming film set in 1969 and dealing partly with the Manson Family murders.

Leonardo DiCaprio was locked in for a role in the project earlier this week and a report in Variety included Pacino’s name as a potential candidate.

The project is rumoured to be about a TV star and his stunt double who attempt to make the move to the big screen in the middle of the politically charged landscape of Hollywood in 1969 – a time when Hollywood’s Golden Age was washed away by the American New Wave.

Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise have also all been mentioned as possibilities for the project which aims to shoot later this year ahead of an August 2019 release.

Details On DiCaprio’s New Tarantino Film Role

details-on-dicaprios-new-tarantino-film-role-696x464.jpg

A new report has offered more details regarding Leonardo DiCaprio’s character in Quentin Tarantino’s much talked about next directorial effort which is set in the 1960s and is being produced by Sony Pictures.

The currently untitled film has DiCaprio in the lead and until now all we knew is he’d be playing a male TV actor who has had one hit series and his looking for a way to get into the film business. Now Deadline explains more about his role and the overall film:

“What he plays, more specifically, is an actor who had his own Western show, Bounty Law, that ran on the air from 1958 to 1963. His attempt to transition to movies didn’t work out and in 1969 – the film is set at the height of hippy Hollywood movement – he’s guesting on other people’s shows while contemplating going to Italy which has become a hotbed for low-budget Westerns.”

The outlet adds the film is a Pulp Fiction-esque tapestry of Los Angeles during the summer of the Manson murders and casting is about to ramp up. Margot Robbie, Tom Cruise and Al Pacino have all been rumored for the project.

Sony Reconsiders Tarantino’s Manson Film?

sony-reconsiders-tarantinos-manson-film-696x464.jpg

Just over a week ago, Quentin Tarantino found himself under fire in the wake of an interview with Uma Thurman about her dealings with Harvey Weinstein and a driving stunt mishap on the “Kill Bill” set which left the actress injured – and could’ve easily been far worse.

Tarantino went on the defensive in a lengthy interview and then was slammed again for comments from a 2003 interview with Howard Stern about the Roman Polanski rape case. The director issued an apology there, but the PR has not been good for the filmmaker just as he is putting together his next film.

Now, Showbiz 411 is reporting that Sony Pictures is having ‘second thoughts’ about producing the film, a project set in Los Angeles in the summer of 1969 and to some extent involves the Charles Manson murder case and even includes Polanski as a character.

The studio is allegedly concerned about the press surrounding the filmmaker, but there are arguably other factors as well. One is that it is also an expensive film with a production budget tipped to be over $100 million and that’s before marketing and potential cost increases. The film would have to do box-office at a level akin to Tarantino’s biggest film worldwide – “Django Unchained” at $425 million – to score a healthy profit.

Tarantino’s most recent movie, “The Hateful Eight,” earned just $155 million. Paramount Pictures is also in the midst of developing an R-rated “Star Trek” movie based off a concept by Tarantino, who may also sign up to direct.

Recordings and music career

Main article: Charles Manson discography

On March 6, 1970 (the day the court vacated Manson's status as his own attorney),:258–269 LIE, an album of Manson music, was released.

This included "Cease to Exist", a Manson composition the Beach Boys had recorded with modified lyrics and the title "Never Learn Not to Love". Over the next couple of months, only about 300 of the album's 2,000 copies sold.

Since that time, there have been several releases of Manson recordings – both musical and spoken.

One of these, The Family Jams, includes two compact discs of Manson's songs recorded by the Family in 1970, after Manson and the others had been arrested. Guitar and lead vocals are supplied by Steve Grogan;:125–127 additional vocals are supplied by Lynette Fromme, Sandra Good, Catherine Share, and others.

One Mind, an album of music, poetry, and spoken word, new at the time of its release, in April 2005, was put out under a Creative Commons license.

According to a popular urban legend, Manson unsuccessfully auditioned for the Monkees in late 1965; this is refuted by the fact that Manson was still incarcerated at McNeil Island at that time.

In 2010, Manson recorded an album of acoustic pop songs with additional production by Henry Rollins, titled Completion. Only five copies were pressed; two belong to Rollins, while the other three are presumed to have been with Manson. The album remains unreleased.[74]

Brad Pitt Joining Tarantino’s Next Film

Brad Pitt is set to join Leonardo DiCaprio in Quentin Tarantino’s ninth film which has been setup at Sony Pictures and which now has a name – “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”.

The story takes place in Los Angeles in 1969. DiCaprio will play a former western TV series star named Rick Dalton, with Pitt as his longtime stunt double Cliff Booth.

Both men are struggling to make it in a Hollywood they don’t recognize anymore. Rick has a very famous next-door neighbor in the form of Sharon Tate who would soon become one of the victims of Charles Manson’s ‘family’.

In a statement, Tarantino says: “I’ve been working on this script for five years, as well as living in Los Angeles County most of my life, including in 1969, when I was 7 years old. I’m very excited to tell this story of an L.A., and a Hollywood that don’t exist anymore. And I couldn’t be happier about the dynamic teaming of DiCaprio & Pitt as Rick & Cliff.”

The film will be released worldwide on August 9th 2019, the 50th anniversary of the day that the Manson family committed the LaBianca murders and the day after Tate was killed.

Sharon Tate’s Sister Upset With Tarantino

sharon-tates-sister-upset-with-tarantino-696x464.jpg

Debra Tate, sister of Sharon Tate, says that she believes that Quentin Tarantino is glorifying her sister’s death for his new film “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” which is set in Los Angeles in 1969 and just signed on Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt to play neighbors of Sharon Tate (a role that Margot Robbie is rumored to play).

Speaking with TMZ, Debra Tate says she believes the actors didn’t think the situation through or think of the social ramifications: “To (celebrities) it’s a paycheck and these people just don’t care. They are terribly hurtful to the actual family and all the living victims. They don’t give a s–t.”

Tate has previously publicly slammed those exploiting her sister’s story in films, with actress Hilary Duff coming under fire when she posted a picture of herself as Sharon Tate on Instagram for an upcoming project. Tate said: “What kind of trash is she? That’s just absolutely garbage. Is there any point in that?”

Sharon Tate, who was murdered along with several others by the Manson Family in 1969, isn’t expected to play a major part in the film’s narrative which follows a washed-up movie star and his stunt double trying to get back into the business.
