“Sausage” Helmer Directing Animated “Addams”

Conrad Vernon (“Sausage Party”) is set to direct an upcoming “The Addams Family” animated feature based on the classic New Yorker comic panels. Vernon, Gail Berman and Alex Schwartz will also produce.

The premise revolved around taking the American family ideal and giving it a morbid and satirical spin. The parents were Gomez and Morticia, their children were Wednesday and Pugsley. Also in the household were Uncle Fester and Grandmama, plus their imposing butler Lurch, the disembodied hand Thing and the long-haired Cousin Itt.

The comic was previously adapted into the popular 1960s sitcom starring John Astin and Carolyn Jones, an animated series in the 1970s, and two Barry Sonnenfeld-directed live-action films in the early 1990s with Anjelica Huston, Raul Julia and Christina Ricci.

Pamela Pettler (“Corpse Bride,” “Monster House”) wrote the new screenplay based on the cartoons, with revisions by Matt Lieberman.

My knee-jerk reaction is to say no, but I want to keep an open mind. I love the 60s sitcom, and love the two 90s movies (Addams Family Values isn't great, but it has some great moments). I never saw the direct-to-video movie, and only caught bits and pieces of the 90s sitcom (tried too hard to be both the movies and the 60s show). The animated series from the 70s is fun, as were the TV movies made. But if they're again going back to the original Charles Addams comics and using those as a blueprint, I think this could be really good.

Is it wrong to hope John Astin gets the job for Gomez?

The Addams Family is an upcoming computer-animated film based on The Addams Family comics by Charles Addams. The film is directed by Conrad Vernon, and is set to be released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer on October 11, 2019


Voice cast

Production
After acquiring the rights to the Addams Family comics, the film originally began production at Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment as a stop-motion animated film directed by Tim Burton and produced by Chris Meledandri.[4] However, in 2013, it was announced that Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer would produce an animated film based on the Addams Family comics, with Pamela Pettler writing the screenplay.[5][6]

In October 2017, it was announced that the film would be directed and produced by Conrad Vernon. Gail Berman and Alex Schwartz will produce the film, and Matt Lieberman will make revisions to the screenplay, and the film would be animated by Cinesite Studios, with Tabitha Shick overseeing the film for MGM.[7][8] In December 2017, it was reported that Oscar Isaac was in talks to voice the role of Gomez Addams in the film.[2] In June 2018, Isaac was confirmed for the voice cast, alongside the additions of Charlize Theron, Allison Janney, Bette Midler, Chloë Grace Moretz, Finn Wolfhard and Nick Kroll.[9]

The film is scheduled to be released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer on October 11, 2019

MGM has debuted a first look a first look photo from their upcoming animated feature reboot of “The Addams Family,” the shot showcasing the design style of the film.

Based on the famous New Yorker creations of Charles Addams, the animated action-comedy will follow the Addams family whose lives begin to unravel when they face-off against a crafty reality-TV host while also preparing for their extended family to arrive for a major celebration, Addams-style.

Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan direct a voice cast that includes Oscar Isaac as Gomez Addams, Charlize Theron as Morticia Addams, Chloe Grace Moretz as Wednesday Addams, Finn Wolfhard as Pugsley Addams, Nick Kroll as Uncle Fester, Bette Midler as Grandmama and Allison Janney as their arch nemesis Margaux Needler.

Matt Lieberman penned the script while Vernon, Gail Berman and Alex Schwartz will produce. Production is underway in Vancouver and the film will be distributed theatrically on October 11th 2019.

MGM is reviving “The Addams Family” franchise as a 3D computer animated comedy feature which hails from the directors of “Sausage Party” and is directly inspired by the original comics by Charles Addams as opposed to the screen adaptations so far. In the story, the Addams’ lives begin to unravel when they face-off against a greedy crafty reality-TV host (voiced by Allison Janney) while also preparing for their extended family to arrive for a major celebration. Oscar Isaac and Charlize Theron voice Gomez and Morticia, Bette Midler is Grandmama, Nick Kroll is Fester, Finn Wolfhard is Pugsley and Chloe Moretz is Wednesday. The film also marks the first film which MGM will distribute themselves in nearly a decade.
