Alec Baldwin Is Thomas Wayne In “Joker”?

alec-baldwin-is-thomas-wayne-in-joker-696x464.jpg

Alec Baldwin has been confirmed to be cast in the upcoming “Joker” film at Warner Bros. Pictures with good indications via THR that he’ll play Thomas Wayne, father of Bruce Wayne and respected Gotham City physician and philanthropist.

The new take reportedly switches up the wise and gentle depictions of Thomas Wayne in previous screen incarnations – this version is said to be a “cheesy and tanned businessman who is more in the mold of a 1980s Donald Trump.”

Joaquin Phoenix leads the cast of the $55 million crime drama film which deals with the origins of the Clown Prince of Crime who serves as the main antagonist to Batman in the DC Comics titles. Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Marc Maron and Josh Pais are also onboard for the film.

Todd Phillips helms from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver. Cameras roll on the project on September 10th ahead of an October 2019 release.

Alec Baldwin Will Not Be In The “Joker” Film

Alec Baldwin has shot down reports from earlier this week that he’s been cast in the role of Thomas Wayne, father of future Batman character Bruce Wayne, in the upcoming “Joker” origin film at Warner Bros. Pictures.

Joaquin Phoenix leads the cast of the $55 million crime drama film which deals with the origins of the Clown Prince of Crime who serves as the main antagonist to Batman in the DC Comics titles. Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Marc Maron and Josh Pais are also onboard.

The initial report in the trades suggested a change up from previous depictions of Thomas Wayne, this one to be a “cheesy and tanned businessman who is more in the mold of a 1980s Donald Trump.” That report hit late Monday, but today Baldwin shot down the report in a tweet saying:

“Let me state, for the record, that I have NOT been hired to play a role in Todd Phillips’ JOKER as some Donald Trump manque. That is not happening. Not. Happening.”

That led to the question – is he dismissing the whole casting report or just the Trump-esque take on the character? In a follow-up to USA Today he confirms it was the whole report – saying he was originally going to do it but bowed out due to scheduling issues:

“I’m no longer doing that movie. I’m sure there are 25 guys who can play that part.”

The new film is about to begin shooting next month for an October 2019 release.

“Joker” Director Teases Start Of Production

“The Hangover” director Todd Phillips has shared a black and white photo of himself on Instagram which boasts the caption ‘here we go’. That line, which Heath Ledger memorably uttered as The Joker in “The Dark Knight,” has been seen as an indication that filming on the Phillips-directed “Joker” original film is about to get underway.

Previously it had been reported filming on the Joaquin Phoenix-led feature would begin on the tenth of September, with Phillips having been heavily in pre-production for the past few months. Phoenix himself has been spotted walking around New York City recently having lost quite a bit of weight and growing out his hair for the role.

With the exception of some headlines about Alec Baldwin’s scheduling conflict exit from the project, the $55 million dark crime drama has otherwise had a pretty smooth ride into production. Warners themselves have dubbed the project a “gritty character study but also a broader cautionary tale”.

“Joker” is currently slated to hit cinemas on October 4th 2019

Brett Cullen Is Thomas Wayne In “Joker”

“Narcos” and “Ghost Rider” director Brett Cullen has been cast as Thomas Wayne in director Todd Phillips’ currently in production “Joker” film at Warner Bros. Pictures.

Alec Baldwin was originally cast in the part, father of Bruce Wayne (aka. Batman), but a scheduling conflict forced him to drop out. The elder Wayne is expected to be a nastier and darker figure than he’s usually portrayed, and has a part to play in The Joker’s origin story.

Joaquin Phoenix stars as The Joker (aka Arthur Fleck), a man in the 1980s destined to become Gotham City’s Clown Prince of Crime. Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz and Marc Maron have supporting roles in the film opening October 4th 2019.

“Joker” Main Cast & Crew Revealed

joker-main-cast-crew-revealed-696x464.jpg

Warner Bros. Pictures has announced the start of principal photography on the Todd Phillips-directed “Joker” movie starring Joaquin Phoenix, and in the press release they’ve detailed the supporting cast and crew members involved in the production.

The story is said to revolve around “the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. [Todd] Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck (Joquin Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.”

The full main cast include Phoenix, Robert DeNiro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham. Phillips, Bradley Cooper and Emma Tillinger Koskoff are producing, while “The Hangover” cinematographer Lawrence Sher and editor Jeff Groth are onboard in those same capacities, as is “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” production designer Mark Friedberg and “The Artist” costume designer Mark Bridges.

“Joker” is targeting an October 4th 2019 release. The project is entirely separate from the DCEU films including “Suicide Squad” which starred Jared Leto as The Joker. Todd Stashwick, the co-writer of that film’s sequel, told Discussing Film that the most recent draft for the follow-up to the 2016 bad guys team-up film is done.

New “Joker” Photos & Ex-DC Chief Talk

new-joker-photos-ex-dc-chief-talk-696x464.jpg

The more that’s coming out about Todd Phillips’ “Joker” film starring Joaquin Phoenix, the less it’s sounding like an average superhero film – and that’s a good thing. As we know Phoenix plays the iconic Batman villain in a $55 million origin story tale that will be dark, gritty, and very “Taxi Driver” in tone.

In fact Diane Nelson, the former head of DC Entertainment, said on Twitter the other day that she believes “Joker” is the type of movie Warners should have been making for years: “LOVE IT! Great story, great actor, specific and string vision from talented director. What DC should have been doing since Nolan, even if die hard fans struggle with his vision.”

She isn’t the only one. Scott Snyder, who has penned some of the most acclaimed “Batman” stories in recent years, also says on Twitter: “I feel like it SHOULDN’T work and yet…I’m genuinely crazy excited for it. It seems daring, weird and dark in a way that could be visionary. In the end, the worst offense w/Joker would be playing it safe, boring, so I’m all in for something like this.”

The film has also released a first official look at Zazie Beetz’s character Sophie Dumond today which you can see below. Additionally set photos are out of Phoenix filming scenes in a subway, scenes that confirm Thomas Wayne is running for mayor in the film, and that there’s easter eggs galore in much of the signage around the film’s take on Gotham City. “Joker” is released on October 4th of 2019.

Joker

As production continues on the standalone “Joker” origin film, director Todd Philips has shared another shot of his star Joaquin Phoenix taking a smoke break in between takes. The film appears to take influence from Alan Moore’s “The Killing Joke” in its re-imagining of iconic DC villain as a failed stand-up comedian pushed over the edge. “Joker” opens October 4th.

Much like what Sony did with “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” with amazing results, this is something of an experiment by Warner Bros. Pictures. How do you do a superhero comic book movie without making it a costly blockbuster tentpole? Turn it into a mid-budget 1980s-set gritty crime thriller about one of the greatest villain characters ever created – comics or otherwise. The casting is perfect with the likes of Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Marc Maron, Shea Whigham, Bill Camp and Frances Conroy, but the film hails from “The Hangover” director Todd Phillips who hasn’t really dabbled in this arena before. Two other concerns is that this could come off as simply warmed over Mann or Scorsese, not to mention the fact The Joker partly works as a villain because his past remains mysterious so giving him an origin story may not work. It’s a risk, but when so many films in the comic book genre play it safe – it’s nice to see someone at least try.

“Joker” Underwent Daily Re-Writes On Set

joker-underwent-daily-re-writes-on-set-696x464.jpg

Shot for three months in New York this past Fall and wrapping just after Thanksgiving, the Todd Phillips-directed feature “Joker” starring Joaquin Phoenix as the iconic villain from the Batman DC Comics remains an interesting question mark at the moment.

The film is an original, standalone story as it explores the life of Arthur Fleck (Phoenix) a man disregarded by society. Dubbed both a gritty character study and a broader cautionary tale, it turns out that the vision for it appears to have changed along the way.

Speaking to MTV News (via Collider) this week, the film’s female lead star Zazie Beetz revealed that the script from writers Phillips and Scott Silver was being re-written throughout production, even on the same day as some scenes, and that was in part due to the physical changes Phoenix did for the role which prevented reshoots at a later date:

“The script was great. We rewrote the whole thing while we were shooting it. Literally, we would go into Todd’s trailer and write the scene for the night and then do it. During hair and makeup we’d memorize those lines and then do them and then we’d reshoot that three weeks later. We had to do everything then because Joaquin had lost so much weight that we couldn’t do reshoots later on so we were figuring it out. But Todd’s quick at getting stuff done so we always had extra time.”

Interestingly neither Beetz or anyone else has painted this as a troubled or difficult production, and all indications are the movie was filmed on time, on budget and without any major issues during the shoot. Robert De Niro, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais and Shea Whigham co-star in the film which Warners will release in cinemas on October 4th.

Marc Maron Talks His Work On “Joker”

marc-maron-talks-his-work-on-joker-696x464.jpg

The Todd Phillips-directed feature “Joker,” starring Joaquin Phoenix as the titular villain from the Batman DC Comics, wrapped production in December following a fairly smooth three-month shoot.

The story centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is said to be an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen along with being both a gritty character study and a broader cautionary tale.

In this take, Phoenix plays Arthur Fleck – a man disregarded by society. Zazie Beetz, Robert De Niro, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais and Shea Whigham co-star.

Maron, who is reportedly playing the manager of Robert De Niro’s shock jock character and this week, described to The NME what it was like filming some of his scenes – especially at the film’s end:

“I think it’s a very interesting approach to this world. I’ve been somewhat judgmental when it comes to comic book movies and I’ve got a little pushback in the press for being a hypocrite. Whatever I think, if you get a call and someone says, ‘Hey do you wanna do a scene with Robert De Niro and Joaquin Phoenix?’ your principals fall to the wayside.

If it’s relative to what I think of Marvel movies then it’s like, ‘Yeah, of course I’m gonna do that’. Oddly, it’s not that kind of movie. The approach that Todd Phillips has taken is more of an origin story and a character study of a mentally ill person that becomes The Joker. It’s more of an intimate and gritty movie with a very specific scope. It’s going to be really interesting to see how it comes out.”

Warner Bros. Pictures will release the film in cinemas on October 4th.
