“Sopranos” Prequel Film Gets New Date & Title
Warner Bros. Pictures has set a September 25th 2020 release date for David Chase’s prequel movie to his HBO series classic “The Sopranos”.
The project, which has been going by the name “The Many Saints of Newark,” has also been retitled to just “Newark”. The new date puts it in a prime awards season berth and also likely means a Fall film festival debut next year.
The television series picked up 21 Emmys and five Golden Globes during its run, so there’s no reason to think Warner Bros. isn’t viewing this prequel film as a potential awards season title.
Chase penned the film which is being directed by Alan Taylor. The action is set in 1960s Newark amidst riots between the city’s African-American and Italian communities. Alessandro Nivola, Vera Farmiga, Jon Bernthal, Corey Stroll, Billy Magnussen and Michael Gandolfini co-star.
